Santo Domingo.- A total of 2.2 million Dominicans, or 23.8 percent of the population, have access to Internet, said of the National Commission for the Society of Information and Knowledge (CNSIC) president Jose Rafael Vargas on Friday.

“As of October 31 this year suppliers of the service reported a total of 287,168 accounts in its different connection modalities,” he said, adding that this has series of important implications. “This number means a growth of 69.4 percent during the first 10 months of 2007."

"This also explains that for of each 100 Dominicans 3.2 have an Internet account and these accounts offer a total of 2.2 million Dominicans the opportunity to access,” he said.

Vargas, speaking before an event to evaluate the country's status on Information Technology, held in the Foreign Ministry, added that of each 100 Dominicans 56 have cell phones; a service which he said has grown 10.3 percent in 10 months.

Yeah, but it drives me crazy how they go through cell phones and cell phone numbers as if it was popcorn or something. I can never get a hold of people on their cell phones because they keep changing them every couple of months... geesh!

tejada, they don't simply change the numbers, the phones get stolen or lost. since there are still no meaningful provisions to deactivate stolen phones, cellphone theft is a burgeoning enterprise. there are guys on every corner who can activate locked phones.

Why is this news? Is having a cell phone really that important to a country that can't even provide the basic necessities of life like electricity and clean water and most of all FOOD! to it's needy.

There are people stealing to get these phones because they think they need it. The youth is terribly misguided. I wish the government would recognize things that are more relevant to the country.

Funny how 56% of the people have money, does this percentage include the people with no minutes on their cellphone... It just seems like a lot of people have cellphones just for show.

This is funny. Yes, many people have cellphones...with no minutes. The focus of the country should be on managing inflation...how can people who can barely put food on the table catch up to technological advances?

Don't get me wrong, it's great that the DR is advancing, it's great!

But my only concern is the ones in charge, the PLD. The focus should be to feed the people.

not only do they have cellphones, they have the most expensive makes and models. people who have not a peso in their pockets are walking around with cellphones with extreme capabilities; internet access, bluetooth, you name it. but they have no minutes on hand. go figure!
