SANTO DOMINGO.- Another serious crisis in the electrical sector as two important generating plants, AES Andres and San Felipe (formerly Smith/Enron), which together contributes around 470 megawatts, went off line Tuesday.

As a result, the grid’s general deficit jumped to 856 megawatts to lower the output to 1,142 megawatts, though the demand is 1,998.

At 3 p.m. the demand in the zone of the distributor Ede Este was about 499 megawatts, as the deficit’s effect spills over to other areas, causing long blackouts of up to more than 15 hours.

While the operators of the San Felipe plant affirm the outtage is because the Government doesn’t pay them, AES said it went off line for “corrective maintenance.”

has anyone even seen Lionel lately? He always seems to be in another country or laying very low and silent amidst all these police and military drug allegations. It would be nice to see him at least make an attempt at addressing the daily problems his people are facing. Of course when you are in an air conditioned suite in another country collecting $1,000.00 a day per diem those problems are distant and do not require the immediate attention like the tough decision "should I get the Chilean sea bass or the Maine lobster". He could pay the electric companies with all those extra taxes being collected on fuel sales. First we pay the taxes to pay the electric companies to generate electricity and then we pay the electricity companies to provide us with the electricity we already paid for...............sound fair?
