President Fernandez with business leaders last night.
SANTO DOMINGO.- President Leonel Fernandez yesterday said consumers will see more "reasonable" prices when they got to the supermarket to buy food in the next few days, though acknowledged that the Government will have to pay the difference.
Lately, Fernandez has met with business leaders, tapped a commission and made campaign promises to confront the wave of increases of basic foods.
“The Government and commerce agree to lower prices of basic products," the chief executive himself made after meeting in the National Palace with owners and representatives of the country’s main supermarkets, quoted by the Presidency’s Web site yesterday. "This meeting has definitively left a sort of collaboration between everyone so that the productive sector, obviously guaranteeing its profit, presents its products to the market and for the market, taking this situation into account, can present reasonable prices for the population."
The chief executive designated a commission to follow-up the price increase, headed by Hacienda minister Vicente Bengoa, who also met with the heads of the supermarkets.
The prices for Dominican staples have risen in the last few weeks to concerning levels for the population, which has begun to express its inconformity in its main forum: the public vehicles.
According to the Central Bank, prices rose 1.71 percent in March.

More than anything or anybody else, the US imperialists decided in 2007 that humanity will either eat a lot less or pay a lot more for food when these imperialists savagely diverted about a third of US corn crop to fuel production.
[There are other longstanding factors related to the current food inflation, but the food-for-fuel policy is catalytic.]
If anybody else had done such a bestial and monstrous thing, humanity would have declared war on them by now.
But as long as the US imperialists are the chief guilty parties behind a policy that will cause genocide in the tens of millions , humanity competes in a show of servility and obsequiousness, groveling like dogs before the barbaric US imperialists.

I don't the goverment should pay anything, It a world problem, not just a Dominican problem therefore people shouldn't expect the government to pay for the differences. It's bad enough it keeps taking out loans for everything. Maybe if they would just stop importing so much food this wouldn't happen.
And to time2rize, I don't believe you know what your taking about, Living in one of the wealthiest county in the US. People here are struggling just as much as other people over the price of food and fuels, Just because people make more money doesn't really mean they have it easier. It's just not the Dominican Republic

United Nations, Apr 18 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will convene a meeting to discuss how to address the world's ever-deepening food crisis triggered by soaring prices.
President of ECOSOC, Haitian Ambassador Leo Merores, said the meeting is expected to be held in early May.
Last week, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed great concern over soaring food prices, which have sparked serious outbreaks of violence in Third World countries.
He mentioned the example of the price of rice, doubled in barely two weeks.
He said the rice stems not only from biofuel production, but also from soaring oil prices that push up production and transport costs, and from the serious effects of droughts and natural disasters due to climate change.

Latin America and the Caribbean is a region of diversity. There is a socialist country ... Cuba and a socialist-oriented country, Venezuela. There are two other countries, Nicaragua and Bolivia, which are in a bitter domestic and international class struggle to break out of the capitalist path and to take the socialist-oriented path of development.
In Cuba, studies by UN and FAO agencies found that caloric and protein daily consumption of the Cuban people increased in 2007. In most of Latin America and the Caribbean, the UN found that the nutrition situation seriously deteriorated in 2007.
The lying US reactionaries and pro-US imperial scum outside of the USA say that most peoples of Latin America and Caribbean eat more and better than Cuban people. Well, some of these people who are supposed to be doing so good are rioting, in protest to the starvation that they are experiencing under capitalism.

"This is a DOMINICAN problem and not one caused by the US," wrote Escott, the irresponsible and reactionary goof.
oooo
This so-called "DOMINICAN problem" is, according to the DT, the "wave of increases of basic foods."
These increases in basic foods are a worldwide problem, including for the US people.
Irresponsible US citizens never admit that any of the policies of their reactionary GOP regime in Washington are wrong and stupid. This is why US reactionaries are goofs.

Sleepyhollowguy,

Do you really think 16% and than some will not have anything to do with the price increase?
Me and my family always compare prices of products, and they are much more cheaper in Florida than in DR, i mean there is no reason why food that is produced in the DR, should be more expensive than getting from Florida.

stop printing money so fast, and prices in general will come down.

They (the government) will guarantee profits to the big supermarkets owners and the big industrialits. Did you know that the majority of the people that must eat are more than eighty-percent the working and partially working masses. You must also include the unemployed in these figures. Government can guarantee profits cause it knows that people must eat so it raises the prices of basic food items to make sure these businesses can show a profit. More money for their pockets less food in your belly. Fuels have nothing to do with such increases. Investigate how much is going into other projects and how many projects are in functions, how much for election, and how much for each party.

Now their OWN economic numbers do not add up.
