SANTO DOMINGO.- A group of Swiss and U.S. investors based in Mexico is interested in buying the majority stake in the Dominican airports management company (Aerodom), owned by Abraham Hazoury and the Spaniard Jesus Balderas, newspaper Listin said.
Airports Department director Andres Vanderhorst said Aerodom and the Pacific Airport Group (GAP) senior executives have been negotiating for more than one year. “I can only confirm that the negotiations have taken place for more than one year and that we even met with Aerodom executive director Astrid Diaz Menicucci, and with five of the U.S. investors interested in the purchase of Aerodom’s shares.”
Since 2000 Aerodom manages via concession contract the international airports Las Americas and La Isabela (Higuero), in Santo Domingo; Puerto Plata’s Gregorio Luperón; Samaná’s Juan Bosch at El Catey and Arroyo Barril, and Barahona’s Maria Montez.

Well Las Americas International is beautiful and is considered one of the best airports in the Caribbean region and the safest regarding security and passenger safety. I'm sure whom ever takes over will definately continue to do a great job. The airport now has two runways, the old taxiway which was widened for landings and take offs, as well as the large runway which was repaved and widened to accomodate the Airbus 380. I'm sure in the future with the increase of airtraffic and passengers to Sto. Dgo we may also see even more expansions to the airport as we know it, like an additional terminal to go with the other two that already excist.

AERODOM is run by the HAZOURY's who own Cap Cana. They created a sub-company named AVIAN which now does some of the aircraft handling. The improvements made and equipment purchases are all done, so is the profit which was in contracts to build and expand. Higuero Catey, Monte Cristi ,Constanza, Portillo, Cuevas De La Maravillas (SPM) etc.
The money in operations is limited since the Airlines have more power to keep cost down than AERODOM to have them raised. The turist industry has priority, and AERODOM can not put the squeeze on them.
The Hazoury's now want to press on developing Samana, where they find some govt oposition but that is really a request for $.
The new aircraft fees implemented also were abolished by LF. They used to charge a Cessna 2 passenger airplaneup to $190 in fee's at Punta Cana and La Romana it was closer to $300.

I agree with Snoopyy3k. Nothing wrong with another terminal at AILA. It took how many years to complete terminal B? The original design was supposed to be two satellite terminals (A&B) on opposite ends each designed like terminal A. If this new group of investors has foresight and a vision into the future; they will no doubt look towards building addtional terminals to accomodate increased traffic. I understand that Punta Cana airport will soon be getting a face lift; this to include jet ways into the terminal plus an additional runway. There's already too much air traffic there and the current facility has not kept up the necessary pace with the increase in air traffic. That airport should be if not as big, bigger than AILA considering it gets the largest percentage of air traffic than any airport in the DR.

Americas and La romana and Punta Cana all within 100 nautical miles of each other ......that is overkill

La Romana and Punta Cana are private so the DR had no $ there that is why they operate efficiently.

nyclatinhunk you are very right. The original plan was to build two satillite terminals on each end of the structure like Terminal A. I wonder why that did not occur. dont know if many of you remember but the original terminal is what is today Terminal B. But I still think that AILA is going to need very soon another terminal, given that they are receiving new flights and airlines from other countries, which means an increase in passengers. As well as given the fact that the old taxi way has been transformed into another runway and once the larger runway is in operation that will also increase the amount of flights in and out of AILA with two operating runways. It is just a matter of time when demand will call for a another terminal. And lets face it it will make AILA an even more efficient and even more attractive airport.

As a matter of fact, Punta cana is going to go with another runway, which is to start construction in 60 days or so. The Original plan for Las americas was as you say 20 yrs back when it was the principal Airport.
Now Punta Cana, moves more passengers than Las Americas. No need to complete another terminal.
The tourist moves with less luggage than the Dominican Visitor, bringing stuff for their loved ones. So that curtails work and time. So moving 1,000 passengers in Las Americas is tougher than 1,000 in Puerto Plata, Romana or P. Cana.
A Dominican comes or goes and 20 cousins, freinds, brothers etc, come to pick up or drop off. That takes space and time, (bathrooms, water, services). The tourist just needs a cab to his hotel.

Las Americas may have improved, but it still sucks. The RD needs a big and modern international airport somewhere around the center of the country. It could feed all those tiny international airports we have.

Great. Then the DR will have another white elephant. An airport that serves nobody.

Las Americas sucks? Yeah!!! in your dreams. How could you say that, Las Americas serves the second largest city in the Caribbean, the largest and most important city in the DR and its adjacent areas. Apart from the fact that it also serves as back up for any delays and distress that other airports in the region may be having. And in case you did not know it is also considered to be the safest airport in the entire Caribbean. The airport itself is in excellent conditions and has nothing to envy anyother inthe world.
Besides the last time I checked there is a "Cibao International Airport" somewhere around the center of the island and I think it's purpose other than to serve the city of Santiago, is also to serve the inner island cities and towns. It's also doing a darn good job of it too.
On the other hand I believe that very soon works on the remodeling of the South Terminal in Las Americas will begin, if they have not started already, which will make the airport even better.
