Santo Domingo.- Entrepreneurs will invest more than US$9 billion in tourist projects in Dominican Republic's major resorts, said Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia Wednesday.

The works will begin in the coming weeks in Bavaro, Punta Cana, Miches, Sabana de la Mar and Juan Dolio, in the east; Puerto Plata in the north, and San Juan River and Samana in the northeast, investments he said will strengthen the Dominican destination in the world's major markets, especially Europe.

Garcia said the investments are also to build golf courses, international tennis courts and a convention center in Santo Domingo, among others. “Tourism is emerging as a market of high quality and it’s booming. Domestic and foreign investment is at its best, even better than in the past 20 years.”

The official noted that there’s currently no Latin American or Caribbean tourist destination with better profitability that Dominican Republic’s, “where reuests to develop new investment projects arrive daily. This compels us to develop a plan of vital infrastructure.”

They are building to much in DR I mean, they are taking away the natural beauty of the country. Everything should have its moderation. Another thing is that with so many hotels the resorts have to compete too much with each other. There was already a complaint about this by Punta Cana Hotels…

Lets hope they take Haydee's recomendations for improving the support structures for tourism. Its a pitty to visit areas like Bavaro and feel like you are in Haiti and not the Dominican Republic. The degradation of the sorrounding areas to these complexes is disgusting and a total disgrace.

Here's some prospective:
I was in the DR last March for my honeymoon (it was a gift, keep in mind). We stayed at the Bavaro Golf (one of the Hotels in the Bavaro Complex). During the whole of my stay I could not shake the feeling that I was being "played". It dawned on me that the whole "Dominican Experience" at our resorts is nothing but a crock: An oasis of Luxury and plenty in a sea of abject misery.

You do not have to be an expert to realize that for all its glitz, the business of tourism is either unwilling or unable to better the quality of life of the people of the country (or even those living in squalor right next door)...

Six Billion may build several hundreds new hotel rooms; but it will do little to improve the lives of those who need it the most.

some of you guys just plain amuse me. really. the types who believe we should just keep on building a new hotel every day. does the term over- capacity mean anything to you guys? or, does the term 'world economic slowdown" enter your thoughts? guys, there is such a concept in economics called the break even point. each hotel has to have a minimum occupancy rate to be viable. with each additional hotel which is built, it jeopardises the break even of all the others extant. it is competing for the same business. it is like putting 6 mcdonalds side by side; they will all lose out, because of competition. if this is not the case, why is it that so many hotels in the DR close down completely for protracted periods of time, and only re-open in high season?

i am the eternal masochist, but i cannot help myself. so i will try to impart some ideas to anthonyc, who seems impregnable to logic. please, anthony, show me one sign of this "turnaround". i am sure ben bernanke will be glad to hear of it. the us economy is somewhere in the range of 12 trillion dollars. 3 trillion of these are in sovereign funds. yes, a full one quarter! so, who do you think is going to be "buying low"? can you tell me, for my edification, how the economy is going to be jump started without consumer spending? do you realise that in the last 18 months the american public has lost 2 trillion dollars worth of homeowner equity? you believe because the dow went up to 400 yesterday means that there is a turnaround in one day? surely , even you cannot be that ignorant. and, GC, oil is going up, like gold, because people are not buying securities and debt instruments. they are investing money in gold and commodity futures. and , Frank, i well remember your admonitions

once again, goulet shows himself to be the world's premeir exponent of the half truth. "california housing market on fire", he says. (did you mean "fire sale"?) he neglected to tell people that 50% of those homes are foreclosures, and that the median selling prices are off by 35%. the creditors are selling for what they can get, just to recoup a part of their losses. and , since the closing of the dow at 400 plus yesterday means recovery, what will you post if it closes 400 down today. ? it was just a one day recovery? yes, GC does not tell you that housing starts, which are the true indicator of economic activity, are dead on the water!

who is this "they" to whom you refer? buying what? do you believe that the economy is driven by people buying stocks and shares on wall street? it is driven by consumption!!! it is moved by people buying televisions, cars, clothes, houses, washing machines. that dependes on LIQUIDITY. a lot of the big ticket items are financed by second mortgages. banks are traditionally reluctant to give second mortgages to homeless people. so, a bunch of guys in three piece suits on wall street buying stocks is no sign of recovery. if the dow closes at 500 ponts up, and wal-mart closes at 3pm because there are no customers, there is no recovery!

Very funny some of those guys up there seem to be, I could be wrong but i dont like the idea of building that many hotels in the DR, I think we have enough so far.

There are other touristic activities which need to be implemented that for sure will bring good profits to the country.

But here we go, we definately need jobs, a lot of jobs are going to be available by the time they get the project done, that's good, but I wonder what they are going to do, when they come across with more hotels than tourists..

you see, GC, if people like you had it their way, some people would remain peasants for ever, with no hope for advancement. i want to walk into a hotel sometime and not have some Austrian or German manager looking at me with that "what are YOU doing here " face. i want a pleasant DOMINICAN to welcome me with the warmth of the caribbean . and if someone is yelling at an employee (which is never a good thing), i would rather see a Dominican yelling at a Canadian, rather than the other way around. why, you ask? because it is THEIR COUNTRY, thats why!!!

i am aware of the hotel school at Cornell. one of my childhood friends graduated from that school in the early 1970s. but there are several positions in the hotel field that are occupied by people who did not go to ivy league schools. and in the DR, even more so. there are several positions in the hospitaly industry on the north coast which are occupied by foreigners, simply due to contacts. remember, GC, i live here, so i know what i see. guys who are at the top of the pecking order in some of these businesses employ their drinking buddies and compatriots, many of whom are rank incompetents. we are always quick to lecture Dominicans about nepotism, but there are jobs here which are the exclusive province of expats. the 80-20 employment rule is a numerical rule, and is not qualitative. so companies have 20 expats at the top of the food chain, and 80 Dominican underlings. then they tell anyone who will listen that they "cannot find qualified Dominicans"
