SANTO DOMINGO. - The highway to Constanza (central) was budgeted at 48 million dollars but will end up costing nearly US$70 million, or 45.8 percent more, this including the rockslides that have snarled the work throughout the year.
However Public Works minister Victor Diaz said a new highway across the Central Mountain Range would possibly cost as much as 300 million dollars with the most technically and economically feasible option. "With the work being there we’re going to set the standard for a mountain highway here in Dominican Republic.”
Diaz, interviewed in the Diario Libre A.M., said the landslides occurred when problem points were being fixed and two new points appeared which hadn’t been identified.
He said the work on the more than 60 year old highway, also known as Casabito, should be concluded by next April.
