SANTO DOMINGO.- Far beyond the emotional issue of undocumented migrants, Dominican and Haitian business leaders yesterday presented a plan to develop both countries which includes a work agreement through which exporters can take advantage of the cooperation from the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries.

The joint strategic plan would implement the Economic Association Agreement between the Cariforum States, the European Community and the Exporters Association (Adoexpo) and was launched as part of the Hispaniola Macadamia project.

Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) executive vice president Osmar Benítez said the country cannot live with its back to the development and trade with Haiti. He said the European Union has more than 20 million Euros in funds for bi-national programs, which in his view shouldn’t be disdained by the two countries.

Whereas Ricardo Koenig, of Adoexpo, said both governments support the plans.

This is a big silver lining in the cloud and opportunities for both countries.......make the best of them and help the less fortunate on both sides of the frontier

It is amazing how much easier it is for the two countries to cooperate on economic issues than on migration!

You see how little praises good news like this get... I do not see that many posts when it is something that is promoting coherence between the two nations.

migration/ illegal aliens and business are three very different things, today in GMA a guy from guatemala that is soldier and went to Iraq was crying because now the USA ICE wants to send his wife with children back to guatemala because her parents got her into USA illegal long time ago,the problem in our Dominican republic is that with all the ladrones in our Gobiernos/los desportados DOMINICANYORK/Colombian/drug and the problem with one million or more haitian and our own poor Dominican it will be very hard for us to grow as a country,i don,t see myself better than a Haitian and because i leave in a foreign country as a inmigrant i can that is imposible for a Hatian to have it good in our country and even worst if he/she is poor, now the problem is that the Dominican country can;t accept 1/2 million illegal or legal Haitian,Haiti and the Haitian peoples have to work hard to fix their problems same as our country been doing since Trujillo.
thanks

Very good

Haiti is DR second largest trading partner beside the USA according to the DR government. That trade is worth 700mil USD to the Dominican economy annually. That's a lot of bread. Currently you have Estrela one of DR road construction Co building roads in Haiti, few days ago the 5th largest university in DR send a delegation to Petit Grove Haiti, they are in talk of building an annex there. The local government have giving them 10 acres to build the campus on. I'm sure the DR business men are looking at ways to take advantage of the Hope law the US just passed in regards to textile manufacturing in Haiti which in turn will creat lot more jobs at home.

Excellent news and more similar projects need to get funding. Haiti's development should be in everyones interest; if economic growth was established and sustain for long enough period, Haiti's problems would lessen, and less migrants would seek to escape from dire expectations. For the DR it would decrease pressures, drive up labor costs, and improve wages. More investments would come into the island and more funds would be dedicated to fix-up the environmental degradations of both parts of the island. A win-win situation.
