SANTO DOMINGO. - President Leonel Fernandez designated a commission to review the taxes new vehicles pay to enter the country, a measure adopted after a more than one hour-long meeting with vehicle importers in the National Palace.

The directors of Customs Rafael Camilo and of Internal Taxes Juan Hernandez and the auto dealers’ representatives form the commission.

It will deal with, among others, a request to postpone charging for the first license plate for eight months, which dealers affirm led to a 60 percent plunge in new vehicle sales this year.

After the meeting Vehicle Concessionaires Association president Enrique Fernandez said he was pleased with the commission designated, and expects it will seek an urgent solution to the taxes, which he said have become a very heavy burden.

Also present in the meeting were Avelino Abreu, of Avelino Abreu CxA, Ramon Hernandez Morales, of Autoozama, Jorge Asmar, of Autogermánica, Jose Antonio Najri, of Delta, among others.

Here is a dumb idea: Waive the taxes for the import of vehicules for indivudials ONLY!
That will surely bring the prices of vehicules in the DR way down.

Of course that would not benefit the "negocios" only "el pueblo"...And we all know which side our steemed Presidente "Abacha" is on.

vacano,
I hear you... But I don't believe that they are going to let go of this money. They will tax the drivers from another angle

We soon will not need a car because – There is the Metro! In addition, the Autopista is falling apart due to Dominican construction techniques’. Anyone seen the pre-survey for the Metro?
Oh well I guess I will walk.

With high vehicle taxes, the continuity of class separation is assured, since the only people who would buy vehicles in DR would be those unable to emigrate, since the well-to-do would continue their junkets to Miami to acquire the latest and obligatory high-end jipetta, without worrying about customs duties.

Mr. Leonel why don't take another look at the decree 146-00 intoduced by senator Francisco Domínguez Brito that offers 50% off tax of non-convetional fuel car (hybrids) that would be a move forward to clear a bit of some of your already backward looking Haitises plans with your buddies.

How are you going to charge your hybrid batteries without luz??

And if you happen to make it, like you live in CDC or Sea Horse Ranch with permanent electricity, you'll sell your hybrid because the kw cost of the km makes it more affordable to run on fossil fuel.

Anyways, who needs more cars in this 2 wheeler driven country?

More traffic jams, more pollution, more carbon cost..

After all, maybe it´s better to keep the taxes high.

I'd love to see a truly independent commission set up to to review the performance of LF.

Hybrids use 2 or more systems they don't just rely on electricity. Most now days run on electric/gasoline type of system. Plugin Hydrids are not well tested and harder to be feasible in DR.

You can dream all you want but at one point or another you going to have to wake up and face the reality that it will never happen. not to Leonel or any future president in any country on earth.
