SANTO DOMINGO. - Dominican Republic’s territory could be four times bigger if it enforces its territorial waters, said Tuesday the Ambassador of Borders Radhamés Batista.
The official said there are 180 miles of territorial waters, adjacent to Puerto Rico, which Dominican Republic should claim from England and the United States. “We have to declare this country an archipelago state and would have many advantages in our coasts and keys for that reason, for example we must have wider possession in the North part because we are already clearly defined with Venezuela and Colombia to the South.”
He said there’s a lack of clear limits with England, where there are many ocean resources and hydrocarbons, which could be on the Dominican Republic side. “If this is reached the country will grow four times its size, and we’re speaking of a new country.”
Batista spoke prior to the conference Sea Boundaries in International Law, by the international expert Paul S. Reichler.
The ambassador said the lack of a defined border with England and neighboring countries leads Dominican Republic to seek answers in international law, since the country’s growth means more territorial waters and more marine resources.

The Ambassador of borders (who made up that title?) wants to claim terratorial waters and in doing so, risk conflict with it's neighbors. He wants to claim maritime rights that his country has no means to exploit, how would he enforce those perceived rights when his navy consists of a few cast off costal patrol boats? It sound to me like someone is trying to justify their position, or just finnished watching "The Mouse that Roared".

Lautaro, I have come to the conclusion you are a master of the obvious. No s^% that is the reason. However, I don't know what minerals they have there, if any. To me is more because of the revenues those islands generate from tourism. If you are thinking of lithium ion mines, the biggest deposits are in Bolivia and Tibet. Right now that is the next black gold. Go to the link below.

England has been trying for years to bully us into giving up our ocean rights so they can use them. The ocean floor contains many treasures just waiting for the right technology to bring them up to the surface. Mineral rights, sunken treasure, fishing rights and more.
Turks and Caicos and Bahamas have been imprisoning our divers and fishermen and impounding their boats for years and enforcing their always greater territorial waters.
This resource is no joke and an asett to our future generations.

Unless you have been living under a rock, hcx27, then you should know by now that the gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic and surrounding waters have huge reserves of untapped oil. In fact, one of your "conservative" colleagues, anthonyC, has been very vocal against the federal ban on the drilling of those reserves. If I'm the master of the obvious, then you're the undisputed champion of cluelessness.

And for your info, it's not the islands themselves which the dominican gov. are reclaiming, but the surrounding waters, specially the fishing banks closest to our shores. This issue is not new at all, only that it has been routinely shelved by the govs. of turn. It appears that the brits forgot to grease the hands of the people responsible for looking at this issue on the chancellery.

Are you that naive to think that if there was enough oil in there the US (or any other world power) would not have tap into it yet? What you need to look at is the return on investment ratio; it is too expensive to be tapping into those waters vs. the amount of oil we would get on return. Here is another link so you can catch up before you start speculating without any foundation to your argument.

Not the Atlantic region you are allotting to. The article also mentioned the US " MAY HAVE" the biggest untapped reserves of oil, but it also mentions the technology for this type of drilling is simple not there, so as I mentioned earlier it is not cost effective.

We must impose our will in the area. First action is to stop the traffic of nuclear waste between UK and Japan through the Caribbean sea. Second is to dump as many Haitian as we can in Turk & Caicos. 3rd Bombard Turk & Caicos with drugs and contamination! Etc.

Ok, mr. conservative, do you have the proofs stating otherwise? If Brazil discovered some massive ones off the coast of Rio de Janeiro (reserves that they'll exploit once the french give them the necessary technology), who's to say that the US (or the UK, for that matter) may not discover some others along their coastline? Look who's talking about digging oneself deeper into a hole. The DR may have its failings, but it's not dumb enough to claim an entire country for itself. The only issue at stake here is the territorial waters separating both archipielagos, nothing more nothing less. (cont...) besides, that imperialistic aim would be a really dumb move, since much of the dominican foreign service aim on the last decades have been precisely to avoid the pretensions of some countries in the international community for the DR to take charge of the impossible task of playing the role of nation builder with the neighbours from the western part of the island.
