Ideally, I would like to maintain a home here as well as in DR. But I want to do it in such a way that I feel I am contributing to my country, not just going to vacation or retire like a lot of folks do. The tough part for me is to figure out how to do it. How can one pay for it? Would it make sense just to rent here and build a house down there with what you save? I really feel uncertain about all of those things. But I know I want to try because my family is important and my parents will be returning to live out the rest of their days there, at least I hope so. Also, and probably more importantly I feel a duty to return to my country and contribute in a positive way. Maybe by working in my local town to build roads, a public library. Something. So I guess the answer to the question is that I do plan on returning to DR but don't know when. Raulin |

I have a plan much like Raulín to hopefully one day have residences in both places. With fortune and work it isn't as difficult as one might think. I would like my children educated here and to be as assimilated as I am, but to also be cosmopolitan and know a different world is out there. To live in D.R. you must have and maintained a budget as you may be doing in the U.S. To built at this time is very costly. the best thing to do is to buy something already build from someone in need of money but who does not know that you travel. Again you must be careful on whatever you decide. Presantly I'm building my house and it has taken me and my wife more than ten years and still we have some details work to do. My brother wants to retired and returned to D.R. I have advice him to save as much as he can, stayed at my home, get to know the country before spending or investing. If you have a relative that is willing to let you stayed at their home without charging you what you have save( paid a small rent for your stayed). Then that will be the best route to take before you decide were you will like to live. D.R. is a great place especially if you are dominican. Edited on 5/4/2008 11:06 PM by hectorvargas. |

I give credit to my parents for being brave and immigrating to the U.S. It's not easy to migrate to a place where you don't know the language, customs and culture are different, and people treat you differently for being an immigrant. I mean, it's a sacrifice and a very brave move to migrate. Like Raulin and Manhattanite, my father has a dream to live in DR, while maintaining a residence in the U.S. The only holding him back is the economic factor, ten years of builidng a home, he doesn't have the economic means now to live in DR. He is still trying to figure that out. As a far as the American born children like myself. I'm blessed to be in born the U.S. where we have all the opportunities our parents didn't have back home and I am proud to be of Dominican descent. There is no other culture or people I would trade it for. I love visiting DR and spending time with my family there. LIke many American born Doinicans, DR is a great place to visit and learn about our roots as Dominicans, to visit family there, and vacation. DR is our second home and not necesarily a place we would like to live but definitely a place we love to visit! |

After being rung through the ringer here and blocked from a license in the USA for many years, I am trying to go back to the D.R., find some place to work as a Dr, and call it a day- plant avocado and mango around a place and grow tomatoes for fun. Doing this with zero reserve is the difficult part. |
