I didn't care for the overall format to much but the content of some of the threads was exceptional. Are some of you DR1 members? Why or why not? 'The past is never dead. The reason I came here first is that this forum is still relatively new. Established forums tend to have insular cliques that take time to break into ... if you challenge the wrong person many will come to his/her aid not based on merits of the convo but because they have known their net pal longer. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes it a chore to become a regular. Still I have read through a few spectacular threads on weighty issues there. It is a clear alternative. |

I agree with all you points. Maybe a unified block is in order The site is also properly geared toward US per se. I know some of you might read sour grapes into my endorsement of the site but alot of the complaints that some of you have on this site I think would be moot over there. It's definitely an alternative some of us should consider. Edited on 5/27/2009 4:18 PM by cibaeño75. 'The past is never dead. In fact, it's not even past.' - William Faulkner |

I became a member over there not so long ago (as Naked Snake), but when I tried to come to the rescue of the honor of this country in some of their DR vs. HT threads, they almost got me flailed alive, cuz' I had the guts to challenge the established canon over there (DR is the villain, HT is the saint, Trujillo was the reincarnation of everything that was evil on this earth, etc.). So I decided to retire myself from there in disgust. “Since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved.” Niccolo Machiavelli |

Oh, so your the one that visited my page!..LOLOL...I don't know if I can say that I've come across a trend of thought over there among most posters that would fit into the "established canon" you yourself came across but what I did see was a wide range of opinions over there and very articulate paisas indeed. I agree, the back and forths over there are something interesting to see, and certainly a refreshing thing over the sad dramas that tend to happen over here from time to time (Although that must be because Robert and the others are very strict over the posting rules of the site). “Since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved.” Niccolo Machiavelli |

It's my understanding that the site was actually founded by a Dominican as opposed to this one, which was begun by a now deceased Isreali citizen. Edited on 5/27/2009 4:39 PM by cibaeño75. Its publisher and founder was the publisher of The Santo Domingo News and The Puerto Plata News, the English language news weeklies. It was the first Dominican newspaper to be available per the Internet. A graduate of the NY Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Dolores Vicioso has made a lifelong mission of reporting on the Dominican Republic. High paper printing costs forced the discontinuation of the 25 year-old + print newspapers and dr1.com was converted at the same time (September 1997) from a weekly to a daily online news service. Early in 1997, British electronics engineer and Internet marketing wizard Robert Woolford had come on board. He is responsible for the constant improvements of DR1 as he finds new digital channels to distribute knowledge on the DR. The message board was started in 1997 in response to all the questions the service was receiving by email. It also permits the service to be updated 24 hours a day, 365 days a week. Today, the forums are a community of about 6,000 people that share information. Its archived database is probably one of the most complete sources of information on the DR openly available to the public. The DR1 news archive is the book of record in English for the Dominican Republic, with its archived news dating back to 1996. DR1 is what it is today because of the synergy of all the people with ties to the Dominican Republic in one way or another who have shared what they know about the country with those that have shown an interest.
