I would categorize Amelia as 'india' not white,... white would be Hipolito. Btw, how do you define triguena? Amelia is phenotypically "white" but that doesn't mean that she's not mixed somewhere down the line. Juan Luis Guerra is a close relative of hers and it's safe to say that he has a noticeable african strain. We all have african strains... even the whitest europeans... a sub-sahara gene of some kind! Being a Dominican myself, I've noticed that many "mulattos" are just light skin black people while some "whites" are light skin mulatto. Does anyone have any idea what the real demographics would be if people actually did DNA testing or whatever for these surveys? In DR, if you have a light skin great grandmother, you're considered mixed. I'd think this is a more realistic demographic: 50% mixed 35% black 15% White Just judging on what I see when I'm actually in DR. EDIT: sorry if this thread has been made before 35% is not far fetch if you're including Haitians into your list... but you shouldn't since Dominicans and the constitution doesn't count them as citizens! |

If someone has dark skin, tight curly hair, and no noticeable non-black features, he is black. Edited on 6/11/2009 11:34 AM by Tacobell. |

When am in DR, wherever i am at i have notice that we are mostly mulattos. 10% white seems about right Edited on 6/11/2009 11:34 AM by CarlosFranco. |

Americans and other foreigners tend to take their views and force them on others. Thats how the conflicts and problems come about. People HAVE To understand that theres a difference of cultures and not everyone goes by the one drop rule. Beyonce is considered black but in Brazil, Venezuela or even Colombia, she'd be considered mixed race or mulatta. That's just how it is, you can't just show up and tell these people that your view of things is correct and theirs is wrong. Deep down, we all know Beyonce is mixed but thats totally ignored in the US while in Latin America it isn't. Mr. thread starter, tacobell, don't place your views on others because im sure you wouldn't except it if others came to you doing the same. |

Whenever I'm in Santo Domingo which is far from Haiti, I see alot of black dominicans. I've seen more black dominicans than I've seen black cubans and apparently, they both have 10% black populations. Which country is lying to themselves here? |

Actually, Guerra is what an octoroon would look like, as are the others that you classified as "real mulattoes". Mulatto simply means a person of mixed african and european ancestry, which means that features among mulattoes are going to vary between the two extremes. A true mulatto in the strictest sense of the word would be the current American president, Obama, who has one pure white and one pure black parent and if you notice he looks more african than those that you classified as "real mulattoes".
