Ugalde comments specifically about a sector of the city of the capital San Jose known as "Tierra Dominicana," where there is a large Dominican emigre community. According to Listin Diario, Ugalde described the Dominicans who live there as "lazy" and "shameless." According to Ugalde, they sell drugs like cocaine out of ice cream shops and prostitute children out of a hair salon. Ugalde even called for Costa Rica to expel all Dominicans. "People can no longer take their kids to the parks because weed smokers are there, we can't go out at night because they will rob us, we can't buy a nice cell phone because they will stab us for it, Costa Rica is ours, lets get rid of this mafia." |

"Don't ask me who's influenced me. No, Listin Diario, this is not racism. This is a society that's starting to get fed up at our garbage that has washed up on its shores. Que verguenza. "Don't ask me who's influenced me. We have terrible reputations in US eastern cities (Puerto Rico?), Argentina, Spain, and apparently Costa Rica. |

Yet I would like statistics. They say that they have money yet they don't work, ergo they must sell drugs??? That isn't too logical. I'm not saying that this isn't true, and it is a shame if it is. Those convicted should be deported and placed in dominican jails. Yet is this anecdotal? Sort of when a blanquito goes to wash. heights or corona and sees a few dominicans selling drugs and assumes that we all do. Inductive versus deductive reasoning, no? HAs anyone here visited or lived in costa rica??? Formerly Estrella. |

When I was there in 93, the same comments were made about the "nicas" Nicaranguans that were migrating there in that time period. Costaricans are very homogenous in San Jose, so any outsider that makes himself know will be a target of all kinds of things. |
