RE: dominican are the best in the world for straightening hair
Hello Dalila ,

Glad to hear that you admire the way Dominican women straighten hair, lol....Well, I personally think that the secret has a lot to do with using the right type of hair products for your hair and then having them put in rollers and dried, and then finally having it blow-dried. My hair is long, thick, and wavy so I first wash my hair with a mint-leaf shampoo by Matrix ( I have an oily scalp so mint is great for that) and then I use Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm and leave it on for a few minutes and then of course I rinse it out and have the rollers put in my hair. You can have your hair blow-dried without having rollers done first if you wish and if your hair is short enough. However, if your hair is long like mine, I wouldn't recommend it

Hope this helped

Making your hair last with an overnight "doobie" wrap helps to keep you hair smooth and neat for as long as it is clean. Homemade concoctions are also surprisingly helpful-egg whites help add shine to your hair and then there's the usual avocado/olive oil mixtures to combat frizz...

I'd like to add one thing to your post-I don't believe dominican women straightening their hair is matter of not embracing their african heritage, but rather a keeping up with the rest of the westernized world (as redundant as it sounds). Sleek straight hair is just plain and simple more seen and accepted in popular culture today and curls are a pain in the butt to upkeep. (Which is why you're posting this right? ) I like my natural curls and wear them once in a while, but I find my hair is easier to deal with when I treat and straighten it.

Look at the common african american woman and all their endeavors to straighten, perm and press, flatten, relax and oil-they even tease each other's nappiness...but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't embrace who they are.

UNDYIN, i am confused. you say that women do not straighten their hair because they seek to distance themselves from their heritage, but because they want to keep up with western culture. how do you separate the two issues? curly hair is an integral, genetic aspect of african people. to straighten it by artificial means in order to resemble the caucasian prototype is de facto rejection of one's bearing. it is not more complex than that. latina women who change their hair color to blonde by way of peroxides wish to appear caucasian, and, since you cannot be more than one thing at a time, you are rejecting the other thing you really are.

to read absolutely!!

i like to straighten my hair once in while and it does suit me,but also im very proud to have curly hair !
depending of my mood,im lucky to change the style all the time
but i noticed over there not having straight hair is considered as being not beautiful!
the obession for a lighter color of skin does annoy me also
my boyfriend for exmaple got a lovely color ,black light skin
but over there is not well apreciated!
the lady who rent me a appartement called him ugly because his color, she white dominican even so in europe she is not white!
my boyfriend is extremely georgeous and all my friend in europe agree with me
but in his country no!!
because the lighter the better!
et the straighter the better!

Boy oh boy. You see my avatar dredlocks? well look at it. yeah it comes off afrocentric. But I relax my hair just like many other black (also haitian) females from around the way. I understand what you're saying but no one is denying their roots or lineage by opting to pursue a more managable and easier hairstyle. I don't know about latinas but black women who relax get this arguement handed to them a lot. I respect people who carry their hair in all hairtypes. Some women in my family as well as myself have reverted to natural in the past and gone back (with caution of course).
By relaxing our hair we are not trying to deny our roots (no pun intended) or act as another race. Its a choice of which texture suits you and what you prefer to comb through and maintain every week. I love my latinas but I also love my "haitiananess" and to change your hair texture does not deny who you are at the end of the day you can change as much as you want but you can't alter the blood and the genes. Express yourself but love yourself first.

RE: dominican are the best in the world for straightening hair
Excellent post, Talia. Couldn't have said it better myself. I straighten my hair and I also leave it naturally wavy/curly, it all depends on what hairstyle I want. When my hair is straight I am the same person I am when I leave it curly. Now, as far as Latinas dyeing their hair blonde, I don't completely disagree with dread (surprisingly! ), there are in fact Latinas who are trying to appear more Caucasian; I'll take it a step further by saying that this can be seen most with women from countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and even fair-skinned Cubans. For the most part however, I would say it just comes down to women always wanting to change their look and trying different colors and styles. I've changed my hair color countless times (never blonde though!), but always putting on colors that favor my complexion. But like Talia said, at the end of the day, your blood and genes can never be changed no matter what hair color or hairstyle you wear.

p.s. I personally hate it when black/dark skinned women dye their hair blonde. Ugh! Definitely a pet peeve!

I understand what you're saying dalila5. You can express yourself however you choose curly or straight. And your heart loves what it wants to love you're strong enough to follow your heart. Be with who you want to be with. In this world we're damned if we don't and we're damned if we do. Someones always going to have something to say. I agree with you on how domincanas straighten hair. The blow-outs are muy powerful. I got my hair done at a domincan salon for my confirmation it looked great and kept consistency for awhile. They do good treatments and they did the rollers under the dryer for my prom and that was pretty good too. But I've seen plenty of dominicanas and latinas rocking the curly/wavy look and I never thought to myself that when they straighten up they were trying to look another race. Ah just do what you want and be contenta

RE: dominican are the best in the world for straightening hair
Please ladies get that hair relaxed..it is easy to manage.. When I went to the UK I was so turned off by the lack of up keep of the women's hair..They dress very well but dont know how to keep the hair done.. Also alot of mixed girls wore a dry afro..when needed some sheen or a wash with some treatment... I was so appalled I was thinking of getting some dominicans to the UK to open up shop..I would be a millionaire in a year...too bad it's hard as hell to get the visa..
