Never go against a Haitian when death is on the line
After the downfall of Toussaint l'Ouverture (see Haiti) there followed the initiation of the black Haitian Empire under Jean Jacques Dessalines in 1803. Spain, however, established herself anew on the eastern end of the island in 1806, Haiti remaining independent. Santo Domingo continued thus a Spanish possession until 1821, when, under the authority and flag of Colombia, a republic was proclaimed, and the Spaniards withdrew. In the following year the Haitian president Boyer invaded Santo Domingo, joined it to Haiti and ruled the entire island till his fall in 1843. The Spanish part of the island again became independent of Haiti in 1844, when the Dominican Republic was founded, and since that time the two political divisions have been maintained, and their respective inhabitants have grown more and more estranged. The earlier years of the new republic were marked by the struggles between Pedro Santana and Buenaventura Baez, who with the exception of a few months under Jiminez, occupied the presidency in turn until 1861. In that year Santana, with the consent of the people, proclaimed the annexation of Santo Domingo by Spain. The Spaniards, however, did not long enjoy their sovereignty, for the harshness of their rule provoked a successful revolution under Jose Maria Cabral in 1864; and in the following year they withdrew all claim to the country. Baez was again chosen president, but was driven out by Cabral after a year of power.

From 1868 to 1873 Baez was once again in office, and during this term overtures were made to the United States with a view to annexation. General O. E. Babcock was despatched by President Grant to report on the condition and resources of Santo Domingo, and while there, in 1869, he negotiated a treaty by which the republic was to become part of the United States. Although ratified by the Dominican Senate, this treaty was opposed in the United States Senate, under the leadership of Charles Sumner, and was finally rejected. In 1871 three commissioners were appointed by President Grant to report further, but although their report was favourable to annexation, no action was taken.

Nice video of Santo Domingo, too bad we can't show a good video of Haiti.... they're too busy remembering the good'ole days of 300 years ago, when Haitians were roamming free half naked bathin' on mud, havin' sexual intercorse and defecating on public places.

Nice Video indeed, too bad these places are not owned by Dominicans nor built by them.

BUILT BY HAITIANS
OWNED BY FOREIGNERS

That's like you showing me that you have a Masserati park in your driveway but you do not own it and can not drive it because you did not pay for it while we Haitians we have a Geo Metro but its ours to do what we want so you tell me my boy who's got the shit end of the stick?

Because they're just too busy trying to come here and implant their rules.... rules that they never follow in their own country.

Arkatype, Said Hey jealous haitian, who told you that those businesses are not owned by dominicans. You don't know nothing about D.R. Too bad in Haiti anything that's worth something is owned by a foreigner, Haiti is not a country it's a zoo. Do haitians know the difference between a bathtub and a toilet? The answer is no!!!!!

Im afraid DN is right, especially in the North Coast the majority of construction and field workers are Hation, while Dominicans work as taxi drivers or motoconchos. thats just my observation in the North Coast. Why do you think these wealthy foreigners, Buy land and built condos that they end up selling , from $100,000 to a Million dollars a pop, Cheap labor baby!!

Arkatype, Said Oh sure TimeToRize you are right? you are totally incorrect in your exaggerated assumption! perhaps a one way ticket to Cuba will heal your discomfort? People like you are not aware of the high poverty rate in Cuba, where only a few enjoy a good degree of education while most dream of coming to the U.S. So keep on posting your pro communist diatribe, believe me i will enjoy laughing at them.

LAUGH AT THIS THEN SPACEMAN:

Dominicans are the dumbest nation on earth how can you claim a state of which you are not a part of. Lets do the math here. I suck at math so bare with me.

Out of 100% of the Dominican Rep.

FACT: Let's say 65% of Dominicans are Afro-Latino and Haitian Descendants from the 22 years of colonization era etc

Now you have I would say 5% of the Haitians in Transit in other words they have no papers. Those that are living in the bateyes.

Then I can honestly say 1% of your population are illegal Haitians. The regular border jumpers.

Then 2% of Mixed Jews, Spaniards, Italians blah, blah, blah, anyway.

Then you have about another 1% of Haitians that are living in DR legally with papers

Then you have about 2% of them living abroad like PR- USA- SPAIN- CAN etc.
(For Spain they are mostly women, they get married or they get sent to Amsterdam right after they reach Spain so they are not really in Spain)

CALCULATOR SAYS: about 24% of DR's population is genuinely DOM
