Racism among Dominicans
This past Sunday, while talking to my childhood friend, a Dominican from Jaracacoa, whom I met in Junior High School in Brooklyn, back in the 70's, I realized how blind some Dominicans are regarding racism among Dominicans in the DR.

It immediately reminded me of the exchange Dreadlock, Gizmo, others and myself are having on a thread here.

My friend's wife, an stunnning beauty from Janico (white, green eyes and blond) tried to debate the fact that there's no such thing as racism in the DR.

No matter how many examples we gave her, she didn't want to see it.

Funny that as soon as I asked her, "who will get a job at a bank faster, you or a black person?", all of a sudden she didn't want to talk about it anymore.

Am I the only Dominican who feels that some Dominicans in the DR are as racists as they come?.

Am I the only one who sees something that's everywhere?.

You're not the only one who sees it, Papaupa. Although you can't exactly blame the people for reacting so defensively, as our own version of racism have been overblown on international circles with the haitian issue, the foreigners going as far as saying that we're a brown version of Nazi Germany, can you believe it? If you're doubting this, just look at the following thread on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Antihaitianismo

We have racism, but nobody can discuss the fact that dominican racism is light years away from the absolutist "one-drop rule" that is still practiced on the USA, some of it disguised as "political correctness". I'm afraid that, until a solution is found to the haitian migratory issue, racism will never be able to be discussed objectively here on the DR, cuz' the pros and cons on the discussion will always end up on the same issue every time the discussion is put forth.

im tired of discussing this issue with people here and in real life, it anoys me more when "OTHER" people such as puerto ricans, blacks, and other people who have never been to DR that we are racists agasint darck skinned dominicans.
wich is 100% bullshyt because 90% of the population is "DARK SKINNED". like ive said before i grew up and lived in DR for many years and YES THERES RACISM just like in evry single other country in the world but nothing over the top, what a hear about a brown nazi germany is WAY to much.
if there is one thing that i can say many dominicans a racist agaisnt is HATIANS but it has very little to do with the fact that they are dark and alote to do with the fact that their hatian.
the same people that were racist and down right rude to a hatian couldnt be a nicer person to the next "DARK SKINED DOMINICAN".

me and my family happen to be on the lighter side and we have MANY dark dominicans as freinds and family and never had a problem with any other dominican based on the fact that they were dark.
LIKE I SAID THERE IS RACISM BUT ITS NOWHERE NEAR AS BAD AS PEOPLE ASSUME THAT IT IS.
THE TRUJILLO ERA HAS DONE MUCH TO DAMAGE OUR IMAGE TO THE REST OF THE WORLD AND FROM THE LOOKS OF IT THAT IMAGE IS NEVER GOING TO CHANGE NO MATTER HOW MUCH MY PEOPLE DO CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. its ok with me if it never does im just tired of talking about it. so can we stop opening threads on "DOMINICAN RACISM".

I have two questions for you.

Unless you own this site, who are you to be telling people to stop opening threads because you disagree with what's mentioned on those threads?.

If you are tired of discussing it, what's stopping you from not posting on such threads and moving on to the next one?.

It's not that hard to do, try it sometimes.

Threads that were "hijacked", right?.

If it's your last post, then I guess you got the message and moved on to another thread.

Gracias.

What's next, deny that many Dominicans living in the US are to blame for people getting into a yola?.

I'm afraid that I don't share your opinion as far as how supposedly racist Dominicans are. I get the feeling from reading some of the posts that DR for unknown reasons gets scrutinized to a degree no one else does. I'm not saying there are no racist Dominicans, which would just be unreasonable. I'm just saying that racism in my opinion is no where near as big a factor in DR compared to the rest of the world.

I lived in DR, went to school in DR and I live among Dominicans of all backgrounds here in the USA. I've always been interested in Anthropology/history & sociology since I was a child and am a pretty keen observer of humanbeings in general. Here's my summary:

1. Socioeconomic class is by far the biggest factor in any type of discrimination/prejudices. Someone who's jet black and of higher socioeconomic class will get preferential treatment than a poor white guy. Your color or race will not hold you back in socioeconomic upward mobility. Money/education/connections > color or race.

2. Looks. Yes, I'm talking about how good looking one is. Ugly women in particular get discriminated the worst. And by the way, the preferred 'type' by the common man is a women of color (canela, triguena, morena, mulatta). Of course blondes are seen as exotic or of higher socioeconomic class because of the foreigner element (Europeans, Americans=generally wealtheir tourist )

Now as far as your question of who will get the job faster at a bank, majority of Dominicans are neither white or black. Do you mean lighter or darker (colorism)? If that is the case here's my answer and my opinion is based on what I saw:
If both are equally prepared and of the same socioeconomic background I'll say the prettier of the two. And this doesn't necessarily mean the lighter.

RE: Racism among Dominicans
Just out of curiosity and just to get a grasp of just how racist are Dominicans, can anyone here do a compare/contrast with another country/ethnic group?
For example, are they more racist than Brazilians? Colombians? Haitians? SouthAfricans?
I'm not trying to be funny with this, I just want to see what type of measuring stick sort of speak is being used. I read an article where some Dominican lady of Afrodescendancy who wore her hair naturally was called ugly by many and she concluded it was because of racism, but she really was ugly and the hairdo just made it worse. As opposed to other good looking Dominican ladies of Afrodescendancy who also wore their hair naturally but looked good and were thought of as fashionable and pretty. Many Dominicans here in the USA consider Polish people ugly as hell with hygeine problems and Polacks are as white as they come. Is this really racism?

You are absolutely correct and it goes without saying that when it comes to racism, the DR is a baby compared to the US. The old or/and even the new US.

One thing you will find in Dominican racism is that even some black Dominicans look down on other black Dominicans.

I know a black Dominican, in the DR, who married a white woman because he wanted to "arreglar la raza" (fix the race).

I have come to realize that the lighter the skin, the more racist they are.

Ever heard a light-skinned (mixed) Dominican calling a black Dominican "maldito negro sucio", even when his mother or father is as dark as the night?.

I have. Lots of times.
