Amet agents need to recover their waning prestige.

SANTO DOMINGO.- Leaders of the passenger transport union today rejected having any agreement or privileges with the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet), and said its agents are the main violators of the transit law, because they park their own motorcycles and vehicles on the sidewalks.

Ramon Perez Figuereo, head of the CNTU union, deplored those actions by Amet agents, instead doing police prevention. He said a well paid, well trained traffic police is needed, but not to persecute motorists.

"We’re surprised at someone saying we have some agreement with the authorities to operate freely in the routes and that tickets are given to us. On the contrary, we are persecuted, mistreated and our vehicles towed by Amet’s tow trucks," he said, adding that Amet doesn’t have the morals to ticket drivers for lack of plates because they travel on motorcycles and vehicles without tags.

The transit Unions are way off base.
They break every traffic rule .I have been in buses where they cross medians and go up one ways. The drivers have no respect for the passengers. They take off rapidly before you even have a chance to sit dowm. The words that I have for them I can not use in this comment. They should not be immune from the Law. They do whatever they want. Ticket them. They have the Lives of the public in there hands.
Sure we like to get there quickly. "But in one peice" Wake Up.
Moto Conchos even worse.

My personal opinion is that the "Unions" really need to force their members to come into compliance with the safety factors which govern motorized traffic worldwide.
To wit:
Operable headlights, taillights and stoplights on ALL motorcycles and transport vehicles operating to carry passengers and cargo. Union and non-union alike.
Obedience to traffic laws. No pulling out into theflow of traffic, causing others to swerve, apply brakes to avoid collision, etc.
Frequent inspection of ALL vehicles by the Union itself to assure compliance with safety features installed on all vehicles used in transport of people and cargo.

The Unions are NOT without Guilt in complying with the Law andshould correct their deficiencies themselves without thenecessity of invoking responses by AMET.

Conversely, AMET Supervisors should assure that their Officers are ALWAYS in compliance with the Laws they are mandated to enforce, including the status of required safety equipment .

i wonder why the dominican republic is the country that has the highest vehicular homicide rate in the world, 47 per 100, 000. india comes a distant second, with 28. maybe it is because the transport union´s members are so assiduously observing the laws. who knows what the rate would be if they acted in a disorderly manner? folks, the priorities are so screwed up, it is almost hopeless to expect improvement. if you are not wearing a seat belt, or your revista is outdated, amet will have its way with you. the revista mystifies me, because it means nothing, except that you have paid a 45 peso levy to the government to help with the metro. on the other hand, do not find yourself in a pedestrian crossing when a car is oncoming; nobody in this country seems to understand the concept of pedestrian crossings.they will flat-out run you over! in advanced such as the usa, societies, endangering the life of a pedestrian in a crosswalk is against federal law:

in the dr, they paint all the stripes at the crosswalks, but people think it is a cute form of decoration.every conceivable road traffic law is violated on a daily basis by all and sundry, but amet frets over revistas and seatbelts. the heck with guys going the wrong way on one way streets, driving on the wrong side of the road, blocking traffic to have a chat with compadre, in a car with 4 bald tires: we have bigger fish to fry. there goes a gringo in a rental car; lets see if he has all four hubcaps!!

I am convinced that AMET officers and supervisors have but ONE (maybe TWO) things in mind when they come to work.
Proper uniform and watching "all the girls go by".
They certainly are not the least bit interested in enforcing the traffic laws in their area of responsibility.
Th other day, here in Santiago, I watched an AMET officer watch THREE loaded busses, FOUR motoconchos and TWO loaaded publicos go through a RED LIGHT at one of the busiest intersections in the city. As a result of this INACTION, SEVEN autos had to come to a screeching halt to avoid collision with one or two of these vehicles.
The Amet officers just stood there and waatched all this occur and DID NOTHING.
Folks, THAT ain't enforcing the LAW. In faact, it is contributing to the ongoing delinquency of these "union" drivers.
Citizens should begin to report these infractions to the headquarters of the AMET in their communities and demand enforcement of the LAW by AMET officers.
