SANTO DOMNGO.- The Web site tmz.com today reports that a Dominican-American group is demanding an apology from one of the United States’ most popular television shows, claiming that its host Regis Philbin “practically agreed with laughter over what the two (he and co-host Kelly Ripa) thought was a joke, that a “donkey” represents Dominicans.
“A donkey might be a good symbol for the Democratic Party, but that doesn't mean Dominicans want to be compared to one on national TV,” the Web site said.
It said the incident on the popular TV show may have been a slip of the tongue of Philbin’s perennial sidekick. “Here's what went down. Kelly Ripa told a story on Monday about how one of her 37 kids was learning about government and said the elephant represented the Republicans and the donkey represented the Dominicans. Regis then quipped, "She's pretty close." Ay, caramba!”
Jesse Ramirez, of the company PrincipePromo, said Dominican-American and Latino leaders will stage a protest outside the ABC studios tomorrow in NYC where the show airs.
“Tomato, tomahto, Democrat, Dominican -- let's call the whole thing off!,” quips tmz.com, though the flap is sure to warrant another episode.

Goes to show how little importance this comment has...

What are Dominicans doing to tear down or diminish stereotypes? Are we reinforcing stereotypes instead? Well, look at 80% of the new on DT.com and it would seem to me that many Dominicans in power act to build-up and reinforce stereotypes instead of overcoming them. This is the saddest part of all.
Society used to make fun of Jews, Blacks etc but individuals can overcome this and prove society wrong! Don't think for one moment that Micheal Jordan growing up in segregationist North Carolina was never ever referred to by the "N" word (often)! The firehouses and police dogs attacking peaceful civil rights activist all happened in his lifetime (even though the same people that attacked activitist are too ashamed today to talk about their segregationist position in the 60's and 70's).
I remember anti-bussing protests in Boston etc. We needed a reality check on this issue.
Like the Jews, Dominicans & RD Gov should spend more time proving society wrong & less time burning tir

Well if her child is saying that, she as a mother should correct the ignorance in her child and not celebrate such a comment. I wish her child was around other little Dominican children when it said that. I'm sure they would have showed it what Donkeys do and kicked it right in the ass. I wonder if her child used the "N" word to describe an African American would Kelly have repeated it? on her live show? Let's be real and not think this is a light hearted joke or a slip of the tongue cause it is not. If I had a live talk show and had a "slip of the tongue" in regards to certain segments of the white american population, I'm sure my show would either be cancelled, I would be hunted like a runaway slave and calling for my head to be chopped along with other body parts or many people would be angry, disturbed and down right disgusted with the comment. It may be a joke for some and a joke for none.

What if an equal statement was directed at Cubans, Mexicans or Blacks. I am quite sure that those groups would be requesting an apology as well. Jesse Jackson Al Sharpton, La Rasa or the Cuban Exile Community would have been picketing ABC every day demanding their share of respect.
But since its not, so many feel that the comment was as "relevant" as the group to which it was targeted and it's OK. An indication of the discriminatory ethnocentric views of many.

I beg to differ my friend. Having the opprtunity to have lived and live on both nations, in the US of A there are still place in cities like NYC, Boston, Atlanta and many others that just for being of color you get the crap beaten out of you. And you're lucky if you do not get linched. Apart from the fact that the cops will be called on you just for looking "like you don't belong there". I have experienced this in the US, to date not in the DR. Do not forget that slavery is still more so sewn into the fabric of US American society than it is in that of Dominican Society. Regardless of what issues Dominicans may have with color and the Haitian issue, it does not nearly compare with what transpires in the US.

snoopyy3k your so right, there still is a lot of discrimination here in the good ol US of A, unfortunatly things here we'll never change no matter what the law says, its peoples attitudes and the way there brought up, racisim is always going to exist, they have just learned how to curb their violent side because they know they could get into trouble, I can tell you right now maybe to outsiders you all see the USA as the land of oportunity as far as making money and getting ahead but it's bad here, I live here and have never liked it, because of all the discrimination. you all say this is the land of the free, but free of what, you have to watch very carefully what you say, how you say it, how you look at someone, because they could get offended and sue you, and its always someone that really doesn't need the money.
