Santo Domingo.- Some of the 35 boatpeople cast adrift when their yola foundered on the high seas 15 days ago had to eat one of their companions to survive, whereas one woman died, of the five survivors who were hospitalized in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In a statement the Tourism Ministry yesterday said Francisco Javier Garcia visited the survivors in the hospital and confirmed that they are in good health, although dehydrated and with swollen legs.

The Tourism Ministry said one of the Dominicans in the hospital told Garcia that they watched as 22 of their companions died little by little and that they threw their bodies in the water.

This is a DAM Shame!

At least the RD Gov has their priorities straight as Prez LF is out of the country being a statesman during a major power failure. I guess, Fannin is hosting another social party to celebrate the "significant progress" (used loosely) he has made with the RD Gov on social concerns, improving the quality of life for the Dominicans & especially the drug war. It AMAZES me how so out-of-touch politicians are disconnected from the REAL WORLD!

Taking to the hi seas on YOLA's when Dominicans know risks & odds are against them but this is the only hope. Even high risk hope is better than NO HOPE. These survivors will have an experience that will haunt them the rest of their lives.

If I were Prez LF or US Ambassador Fannin, then I'd be highly embarassed by the status quo. Americans r sick of the status quo & want results...That is why you have a former IL state assemblyman who my soon be President because "WE WANT CHANGE!"

Bush, Fannin & McLame don't get i

Something very sad besides what can be read on this article is that some of these survivors will do it again.

This is really shameful, not only for the government, but also for the citizens that risk their lives in search of nothing. It seems hard to understand that the difference is not much between the U.S and DR, except that in DR we have our families and friends to support us in times of need, in USA we are on our own. When will we learn from the experience of those who come back running from the us, when will we open our eyes and see that after 10-15 years our neighbor who's been living abroad has amounted to nothing but sickness and problems, when will we learn that there is nothing more important than life, than staying close to our families? I guess we know, is just that until we continues to dream of the kind of life that TV and the capitalist system are portraying to us, we will desperately run in search of way to acquire that luxury life we see on TV, but the reality is, that is better to eat plain rice than raw flesh in the middle of the sea. http://nicolasdelvalle.wordpres.com

they still doing that crazy shit?..we need to stop thinking that other countries are gonna save us and start dedicating time working on DR..in my opinion those desparate people are ignorant and definitly not educated..whose fault is that? is the question.

To:haitian 1804. Don't be sorry, that group of Dominicans did it out of desperation, just like those athletes did back in 1973, when their plane crashed on the Andes.
Haitians have eaten human flesh many times while practicing voodoo, with no necesity at all.
I 've seen your comments about how you (haitians) could overtake us again.......come on,make our day! If you were unsuccessful many times over on a 12 year span, when we barely had any man power and had no resources.....What makes you think that you'll be victorious this one time??
Just try something "funny",come at us like a"tsunami" please and you'll see how we'll use your own people as raw material to build the wall that will finally separate the 2 countries for good, and every time you'd look at that wall from your side, the bones and skulls sticking out of it will remind you why you speak creole and why we speak spanish.........Fair warning: stop taunting us,don't try our patience.

Good luck everyone.
