Santo Domingo.– Two ambulance drivers are facing drunk driving charges for allegedly
transporting patients while under the influence, Dominican authorities said
Saturday.
Medical staff at a Santo Domingo hospital alerted police Friday, after the
two allegedly drove several car
crash victims more than 120 miles (200 kilometers) to reach the facility, the
government's information office said in a statement. It did not give further
details.
The drivers were fired and were expected to appear in court on Monday, the
statement said.

this has all the ingredients for a sitcom or a Cheech and Chong movie....if it was not so sad

on a serious note: 120 miles with injured passengers? was there no other available hospital en route? if so , are there reasons why the victims could not have been taken there? will these knuckleheads be charged with additional offenses, such as reckless endangerment? is that a concept here?

@Trujillo,
I've seen bicycles, bikes, carritos publicos, old cars, nice cars, luxury cars and jeepetas, busses, horses and carretas go in the wrong way in Santo Domingo. Even in the main avenues like the Lincoln and Churchill. I think an Ambulance would be the most forgivable of those LOL!

but then again, DaniDr, is there any such thing in the Dr as the wrong way? i always thought people were allowed to go in any particular direction they felt like at a specific moment!

No, there isn't a wrong way. At least it varies too much from person to person. We make fun of theese kind of comments, but once in a while someone gets hurt with this kind of 'not wrong' things, and then someone learns why it's not a good idea to go in the wrong direction.

usually it is the victim that learns: the malefactor who was going contrary to traffic usually insists" NO MI CULPA!""

Remember how dead-lock the streets can be, so if a public vehicle (ambulance/police) is on the wrong side or a oneway street you pull over and let them pass. The law I think allows for this. Now if I'm dreaming please let me know better:)

Now to remind you all of the movie; Mother, Jugs & Speed (1976)
Starring: Raquel Welch, Bill Cosby. This brings that movie to mind.

actually, ceworld, it is absolutely normal in any civilisation for traffic to defer to emergency vehicles, once they have property alerted the surrounding traffic of their intentions. in new york, EMS ambulances, fire engines and police cars sometimes even drive along the sidewalk. in the DR, everyone has an emergency whenever he feels like it: i have seen guys driving the wrong way along a divided highway in order to turn the wrong way up a one way street! the never ending mystery remains: why the heck don't they actually do something when they arrive, besides strolling around in a fog?

The "common sense" safety control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens, who wish to own firearms for lawful purposes, and do nothing to prevent criminals from obtaining and using firearms in the course of their chosen profession.
