Santo Domingo. - The Supreme Court’s (SCJ) 2nd Penal Chamber will hand down within 30 days its ruling against an appeals court sentence which acquitted two former officials in the Hipolito Mejia administration (2000-2004), accused of introducing 50,000 tons of the toxic waste rockash in the port Arroyo Barril, Samaná (northeast).
Former Environment deputy minister Héctor René Ledesma and the ex Port Authority director Arsenio Borges were acquitted by the Samaná and San Francisco jurisdictional courts.
The appeals against those sentences were filed by the Institute of Lawyers for Environmental Protection, World Ecological Group, the Arroyo Barril Neighboring Board, the Samaná Chamber of Commerce and Production and Ramon Antonio Peña.

We need to ask EX- ambassador Hertell what he knows about this case and AES PR?????
The latest development isthat this rock ash will be covered with 2 inches of "oil", which I presume to mean asphalt.
The DR Government received some US$6 million in damages and to clean up the areas in both Samana and Manszanillo. They carted of therock ash in Samana over a year ago to the cement plants to be butned. Why has it taken so long to "cover-up" that same contaminant in Manzanillo andwhere is tehUS$6 million being spent?
This whole case has stunk to high heaven since it began andhas resulted in a huge cover-up by the government.

And it was obvious what was going to happen, as usual. Dominicans who are responsible for the dumping, get off, because they pay the RD SYSTEM with a fraction of the money they made in taking and dumping it in RD.
And as usual, THE POOR SUFFER, AS WELL AS THE ENVIRONMENT.
The collusion between the US and RD is sickening.
I went by the pile in Manzanillo the other day, still blowing all over the place.
Also coming to this spot is a coal fired electric plant run by the Chinese. Imagine the money payoffs here so that they don't have to use expensive pollution controls. I feel sorry LA GENTE.
Then there is the reference to the Lybian Governments proposal to build a Refinery in Manzanillo. This proposal has been being "mulled over" by Leonel since being made public.
Let's face it, neither this, nor any other Dominican Administration will make a decision toward "progress" unless there is a great deal of money in it for them, individually.
Such is the "honor" of your "glorious officials".
That's the way I see it.
'Course I could be wrong.
