SANTO DOMINGO.- Haiti government ministers have been meeting since early Tuesday morning in an effort to seek solutions to the crisis affecting the population in that country, which has claimed the lives of 50 people in violent protests, said Dominican ambassador in Port-au-Prince Jose Serrulle today.
The diplomat said although the protests have taken place in the capital, the southern city Les Cayes, and in the northeast town Ouanaminthe, “I insist that the government can control the situation, together with the Haiti National Police and the United Nations troops.”
Serrulle, speaking from Port-au-Prince by phone to the network CDN, said the two or four million Haitians around the world who send money from abroad is what has saved Haiti from the global crisis in the jump in prices. “I believe that in general things are under certain control. At any moment the government of the primer minister will present president Rene Preval a series of reforms and the measures taken.”
He cautioned however, that “the stomachs of the people can’t wait, and the loss of more lives would be unfortunate.”
There are an estimated one million Haitians living in the Dominican Republic, and over the last 20 years that number has jumped whenever a crisis affects their country.

"Let's see the outcome of this mess in Haiti and hopefully We don't get affected sooner or later"
I'm going to make a prediction here which isn't much of a prediction for anyone that follows global news and/or trends: These protests against high food prices are going to be seen the world over this year. It will not be confined to Haiti. This is just the tip of the iceberg. It's going to be a global problem but we're seeing these manifestations in haiti first because the food prices are just exacerbating the extreme poverty already in existence there. DR is already being affected by escalating food prices. Don't anyone be surprised if it hits the fan there soon, too, though I sincerely hope calm is maintained.
From: United States, Spring Valley, NY
50 people dead........thats funny because in other news websites they list about 4 people dying because of the protest. However, I put the blame squarely on the incmpetent Haitian officials running that country.
From: United Kingdom
Jemesouviens1804, glad u find it funny( not even one person dying is anything to laugh about).

Mr. Cibaeño75, is not only the rise in prices that is affecting the Haitian people, but the disproportions in the mechanism of the distribution of food. Food in Haiti sometimes enters a state of putrescence at port; before it gets into the market place. What would be the logical solution ? Cutting of some of the red tape(deregulation), to allow a free flow of goods into the market .
The bigger problem in the long run is the economic maxim as to price levels, and their “stickiness”, as they easily go up but seldom come down. Say’s Law states supply creates it’s own demand but in this case some good Questions need to be made: What is driving the market? Is there inadequate supply? Or just price manipulation by suppliers?

what sad comments these are about poor, impoverished people who do not have the economic ability to properly feed them selves. In our region , Haiti is the poorest country and of course needs long term ways of improving their economy and giving people work so they can earn money to pay for food but in the short term they need help from everyone else just to maintain decent health : Probably there is also a level of corruption both in the beaurocracy and the food suppliers but you can not turn away from starving people , who have no way of countering the poverty of the nation as a whole . We all see, in the DR, how hard the haitians work when given an opportunity but at present there are no opportunities in their own country and many people starve. I hope the DR and other latin american countries find a way of assisting these poor people .

Haiti as in any Latin American country is face with the irresponsibilities of government. Latin America has one of the most wealthiest land for the production of food as well as other natural resources. The problem is a lack of cooperations between these countries and those who only think about themself. Haiti does not have an expanded agriculture but its neighboring country (D.R.) does have a well developed agriculture. Who cares about the needed, inflate the prices and drained the most needed while officials drive around in their lusuries cars and thier sons and daughters eat till they can no more. Eat dirt and more dirt. Did you not read the article.

In my opinion the worst thing developed countries can do to help 3rd world countries is help with food and supplies. Mostly because the "poor" country get's used to it and then you can't cut off the help, and the people have always a false hope that someone will come and solve their problems. In other words, it creates a dependency and slows progress.
Haiti needs opportunities, but first of all they have to take control of their own country if they ever want to start improving.

Could you please stop embarrasing yourself (and us) with your hate discourse, Rubirosa? While it's the truth that haitians, like the rest of latin americans, are partly to blame for the problems that they're currently facing, it's no less true that the western powers share a lot of the blame for that country's predicaments, because their neoliberal policies have destroyed the only source of revenues available to the country: their once thriving rice and swine production, specially the ones based on the Central Plateau, which experienced all the brunt of those malignant policies. The once thriving and independent farmers from that region are now being reduced to make a living with the meagre salaries that they earn making back breaking work for the foreign free trade zones established over there (specially the ones from the M Group), just the same thing that happened with the mexican farmers with the NAFTA.

First of all, people aren't protesting of poultry that come from the DR rather the cost of basic products used daily, rice, plantains, beans. So don't make it seem that dominican republic was haiti' savior and banding the infected chicken has anything to do with this protest. Besides, the same thing is happening in the DR and worldwide..the cost of basic products are too high for the majority of dominicans. The tiger from the far east have been wanting more to feast on since it's growing rapidly which will affect all but the poorest countries feel it sooner. I can't believe some are happy because of this. I will leave with this..don't ever laugh at a passing hearse. Rubirosa, as your countryman Lautaro said earlier stop embarrassing yourself and many of the good people of DR with your absurd comments. As many have already indicated above, the price of food has risen by 40 - 60% worldwide due to higher fuel cost, and food production that is not able to meet increasing worldwide demand; all of which have precipitated the riots that have occurred in Haiti, Asia and others. As President Kennedy once said, all humankind breath the same air and cherish the same basic dream, so, you can laugh at our sorrow today, but I hope most Dominicans are not like you, otherwise it could be your plight tomorrow.
From: Dominican Republic
Now I have read the comments from one world and from JabaoHaitian and Lautaro, I am much more happy that most people feel very concerned and unhappy when poor people in any country do not have any way to properly feed themselves. The plight of poor people in some african countries is equally horrible but Haiti is on our doorstep so we all feel it more strongly. There is no place for hatred in our world ,,we have seen what hatred does in africa and in the middle east with many people killed. We do not want hatred in the caribbean because as one world correctly says..we all breath the same air and cherish the same basic dream to be healthy and happy in this life. I hope that a long term economic plan can be worked out for Haiti so that the entire population benefits in much the same way as Vietnam and Thailand have improved in Asia but in Haiti this will take many years and in the meantime many haitians need help just to feed themselves.

Higher food prices and greater starvation
Causes:
(1) FOOD-FOR FUEL
The diversion of a huge portion of the US corn crop from food and from feedstock to production of fuel. Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez instantly told the world about the likely consequences of this US program when US imperialists first announced it. But most of the world and the cappie press preferred listen to gutter-trash like George W. Bush, and his slimy, reactionary running dogs who assured that the program would not have serious adverse effects of the world price of food even though the program radically alters the balance ... or, rather, imbalance ... between the supply of food and demand for it.
(2) OIL PRICE HIKES
The US aggression against Iraq and the proposed aggressions against Iran and Venezuela.
(3) FALLING US DOLLAR
A trillion ... plus ... war based on US lies against Iraq that still bleeds at a rate of 12 billion dollars
a month.
Who is the blame for the increased famine?

The bourgeoisie and the upper stratum of the middle class don't have to worry about rises in the price of food no matter how dramatic the changes, because if they lie about a meal is one where the diners "typically discuss business" ... whether or not they discuss it ... the bourgeois and upper middle class individuals can treat the meal as a "business meal" and let the taxpayers pay for their food as a company tax write-off.

What a day.
Taking the presupposition that oil, US dollar, and corn are behind the worldwide, including the USA, leap in food prices.
Well, today, the dollar plunged about 150 points or, more correctly, pips to 1.5840 against the Euro. This means that importers of US and some non-US things got to come up with more dollars tomorrow or cut back on their purchases. In either case, the higher prices will be passed on to consumer.
Oil climbed to the unheard of $112 a barrel but closed at about $110. This means importers got to come up with more dollars because dollars are the international transaction currency for oil.
Corn farmers and corn processors are trying figure out how much higher is the rate of profit for using corn to make fuel over the rate of profit for using corn for food and feed . If the difference is irresistible, they make no secret that they're going switch more of the corn to fuel. As oil goes up and up, corn-to-fuels nears the irresistible range.

The slaves and reactionaries say "Go ahead, I'll happily starve if it makes US imperialists happy."
As you can see with your own eyes, Mexico is the fourth largest producer in the world.
But about million Mexican farmers lost land under the FTA called NAFTA and the US imperialists have moved in and grabbed much of the best farm land. These imperialists say Mexico has to devote some corn to make "gasoline," because the imperialists own a lot of the land.

To cut down on the size of the schools until the US presidential election is over, the reactionary bourgeois regime in Mexico City, under pressure from the US imperialists, let paramilitary groups shoot Mexicans migrants on the river bank before they swam.
The shootings are called "object lessons."

My personal thoughts are that if more people would start gardens to supplement their food costs we would have less protests, "starvation" and the like both here and abroad.
This mind-set of demanding that the "guv'mt" provide the solution for everything from "birth to death" is a NO-BRAINER and has lead to what has been discussed above. Any government, whether absolutely benevolent or completely unconcionable, can NEVER provide that which the people won't provide for themselves.
To all of you who are forever pointing the finger at government, look into the mirror of your own actions and identify the "handwriting on the wall".

"Venezuela President Hugo Chavez, who last year warned of global unrest following a decrease in land available for food harvesting [due to food-for-fuel programs], plans to send 364 tons of food aid to Haiti. Chavez, who last year created a $20 million fund to help Haiti cope with fuel and food shortages, said today in Caracas that ``the world is entering a food crisis of great proportions.'' Bloomberg reports today.

But the reactionary scum that follows, defends, and extols US imperialists denounced Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro for their warnings last year of a world food crisis after the George W. Bush, the top leader of the US imperialists, announced that about a third of the US corn crop would be diverted from food consumption to fuel production, a fiendish move that deliberately and coldbloodedly will send millions of people to their grave from starvation.

Believe or not, there are supreme idiots who believe that the growing world food crisis is only a "Haitian food crisis."
That is, idiots who believe that when George W. Bush, the leader of the US imperialists, savagely decided last year to divert, by means of farm subsidies and tactics, a third of the US corn crop from world food consumption to fuel production, only Haiti was affected.
Talk about dumbasses.
Therefore, the idiots argue only Haiti suffers from the deliberately enhanced famine as a result of the US imperialists' decision to withdraw a sizable portion of the food supply from human consumption.
These idiots are astonishing.
These idiots can't imagine that their beloved and highly idolized US imperialists would deliberately trigger a worldwide famine or an intensification of a worldwide famine.
"Oh no! I can't believe it. My dear US imperialists would never behave on such a low animal level." the dumbasses exclaim.

All of you are talking like thedumb yokels that you are.
Haitians are like Dominicans in that they depend on RICE as a staple; NOT CORN!!
As a matter of fact, in the countries that are suffering the mose from lack of adequate supplies of food, it is those countries that have RICE as their staple.
So why all this concentration on CORN?
Possible the reason is that item is more visibly being slightly reduced in the world market and diverted to the manufacturing of Ethanol, whereas RICE is not.
The entire world is focussing on stretching what oil they have by supplanting it with a mix of ethanol to make it go further. Were it not for this small thing prices of foodstuffs would rise even greater due to transortation costs. Those millions of trucks and ships use a LOT OF OIL getting thefood from thepoint of origin to its final destination.
Of course people like Belial and Company don't take that into consideration, do they. They just want to point their finger like always.

When a big drop in supply of one staple happens, demand for the other staples with unchanged supply rises. This increase in demand for the other staples with an unchanged supply status in the market produces price hikes. See Karl Marx 101.
Say, there's a big drop in supply of chickens, this drop cause a big leap in the demand for fish. This increase in the demand for fish will likely result in a significant rises in the price of fish, even though the precipitating cause is something that happened to the chickens.
In other words, the the traders and counting machines on the Chicago Board of Trade presuppose that world food supply is interconnected and when adversity happens to one part of the food supply, the change is immediately reflected in price of contracts, options, and futures of other related commodities.

Like I said, Haiti has conditions that exacerbate what is being recognized as a global problem.
This is ironic and unique to me..................People starving to dead and the goverment showing a european 1st world country attitude.
Good luck Haiti...........................
Haitians were so proud and brave not to buy chickens and eggs from Dominican Republic.
My question is when Haitians will do something positive and proactive to fix the mess that They
have in Haiti.
Holy cow............................................what kind of international image They showing
Haitians will never go the extra mile for anything other than enjoy their status in Dominican Republic of being the "Victims" and defame and degrade the Dominican Republic when They
have any chance.
Haitians, Haiti, US, Canada and France are looking for an easy solution for Haiti Mess and this
is throwing everybody together in the same jungle.
This week Haitians wanted to celebrate Toussaint Louvertore Birth in Dominican Republic, insulting Dominican pride with dirt and worms.
Haitians need to develop a different personality, a truth identity........................
Haiti needs opportunities, but first of all they have to take control of their own country if they ever want to start improving.
Is always easy put the blame on somebody else instead of improving and go the extra mile.
Your comments are old "Rhetoric" that don't make sense anymore in a new era.
Minushtah in Haiti is so "Dissapointed" with their behavior and don't know what else to do
to fix the mess and Jungle situation.
He was so concerned about its fellow people and this is why He was fighting against the "Evil"
and "Bad" Dominicans that have done so much damage to the poor "Haitians"
Praise the good work that The President MR Rene Preval has being doing for his country protecting his people and showing a truth and sensitive "Haitian" pride.
Tell me please, or I guess is easy to be the victim.......................
Quite frankly this is not going away.
.

You defend your goverment before since They were doing a good job, look what happens now , the good job that They were doing was starving Your own people to death.
This is insane, mentally retarded and mentally challenged to me.
So continue praising your goverment pride on being stupid and dumb while blaming others for their own mistakes.
Time to focus all Your negative energy on solving the problem not attacking others for Your own failures.
I would like to visit Haiti once I get sometime in the near future. If any of you would be so kind as to recommend an itinerary, where I could enjoy the beautiful sites, natural scenery and above all the common folks I would greatly appreciate it.
I am not a fancy hotel or resort kind of person; no artifical enviorments if you no what I mean!
I don't know why You so concerned about us when You even actually can't fix the mess in Your country.
You always try to sound peaceful and caring on Your comments when in reality You full of hate and envy against us.
People like You make me sick to my stomach and You are the same type of person That truly represent Your race.
Hunger is not a fun thing and the ones that are hungry I am sure are not the politicians.
Will sugest you to try first and then let me know the feeling about it, stay positive with the mess in Your country since is so easy to point fingers to others for the mess that You are going through.
Keep downplaying the "mental defased" job that your goverment is doing specially starving Your own people to death.
Why You and your gang don't focus on attacking the real issue, instead Your "Twisted dwarf" brain is going places.
Face the reality that your goverment is so "Screwed up" supposedly defending the people interests.
Is so funny what Your "Ungratefull" people always do specially with the trading.
Your people start pointing fingers to the Dominican Goverment right away: "Dominicans are selling contaminaded stuff to us and They want to make us sick so We are going to show
some proud and close the border so We don't ge sick"
What's your answer regarding all this irresponsible behavior from your dumb goverment??
"Now, be a good slave and die quietly."
JabaoHaitian
Thank you, I will begin to save my cuartos!
So, why should they care about the spread of famine?
Keep the "low class" for You and Your own people "Please"
Get some decency "Chopo" or "Chopa" either male or female
Your comments are sickening and show Your low life class.......................
Don't need to be "Dominican-York" or whatever name You and Your dumb gang want to
think.
I learned English watching "The simpsons"
May God bless "Dominican Republic" for years to come
This is how I laugh to Your own created ignorance of ideas and civilization, not knowing that eventhough We are a Third world country We do have people that represent our country with an "Excelent" criteria and concept.
So once again keep pushing the wrong "Buttons"HAYkickyouninthe" , at least I'm laughing with Your ignorant mentality.
Read and watch more american and worldwide news about Real "Dominicans"
JE JE JE JE...................You released my stress today................JA JA JA JA
You are annoying and "Clueless".........................
Haitians like You harass Dominicans when instead of posting positive comments and solutions to help Your own country rather post "Negative" comments against Dominican Republic which is the only country worldwide that Haitians have a choice to go in an easy manner.
But at the end Haitians always express their destructive comments against our existence.......
Do I hear goose stepping or is that the reincarnation of Trujillo.
May God have mercy on your soul!
I wish to have compassion and respect for them as long as They gain their Space in this planet.
So many examples that I tried to set up on these forums but always get the same "Victims" answer and explanation.
Human beings regarding of what race They belong to must prove themselves with actions "Never" with "Excuses"
Blacks in "South Africa" did it, jews "Worldwide" did it, Japanese "in Japan" did it and ETC, ETC.
I try to show compassion and respect towards "Haitians" looking for ways to settle down differences but once again the answer is the same: Hate, envy, betrayal, bad promotion and looking for worldwide recognition against Dominican Republic interests.
Example for all Haitians: This week You want to celebrate "Toussaint Louvertore" birthday, to me
this is perfectly fine and honest and politically correct since We all human beings have rights.
The smart way of doing for "Haitians" was pushing "Dominicans" with a non-sense celebration
in Barahona and Santo Domingo forcing their hidden and stupid agenda against Dominican Republic national security.
I stay repetitive with the"avian flu" since "Haitians" are the ones that abuse our sense of innocence looking for international recognition defaming and stumping on Dominican decency.
This week We saw the results since "What goes around comes around", They defame us worldwide and now They are eating their own "C..p" and once again the blame is on us for
not reason.
I just want to see some "Truth Haitian Accountability for their own actions"
It appears Brown Shirts are in vogue for the spring!
and continue defaming and downgrading the same country and land that is feeding Your
guts.
You hate "Dominican Republic to death" so please do yourself a favor and move back to
Haiti.

The US imperialists want to divert about 90 milion metric tons of their own corn to the production of ethanol.
This is also the plan for the DR.
To cut down on the size of the schools until the US presidential election is over, the reactionary bourgeois regime in Mexico City, under pressure from the US imperialists, let paramilitary groups shoot Mexicans migrants on the river bank before they swam.
The shootings are called "object lessons."
On the US side, the imperialists are building a hi-tech fense to keep the Mexicans out and to help direct electronically the operations of the paramilitaries on the other side.
Haitians were so full of "C..p" defending their "Dumb" goverment with the Eggs and chickens ban on Dominican Republic, now the population is starving to death and still Haitians want to know why they living in the dark ages.
This is why I don't like Haitians.................Where are the hatians that defended their "Forrest gump" president?????
You're totally misunderstanding what's going on in Haiti and indeed all around. Here's a current article to help you understand..
