SANTO DOMINGO.- The United States Government is concerned with the forgeries in the Civil Registry which makes it easy for a large number of Dominicans to get ID cards illegally with which they manage to travel to that territory, and pledged wider cooperation with the Central Electoral Board (JCE) to confront it.
The undersecretary of State for consular subjects of the U.S. State Department, Janice L. Jacobs, revealed her government’s concern during a meeting yesterday with JCE president Julio Cesar Castaños Guzmán, whom she visited together with other American embassy officials in the country.
"She came with the ambassador and the consul to deal with the topics of identity fraud; which is one of her concerns and I said to her that that was in fact our same concern," Castaños said after the visit concluded.
The U.S. delegation also spoke about the phenomenon of undocumented Haitians who reside in the country and status of their children who are born in the national territory under that condition of illegal residents.
The U.S. official said that during her visit, that she defined as of courtesy, she spoke of consular topics such as civil documents, fraud and related topics.
Regarding the difficulties with forged documents of Dominicans, Jacobs said: " we have them, as it is around the world, not only here in the Dominican Republic we find fraudulent documents. We have a very close collaboration with the Board because we have the same interests in fighting fraude."

I also am shocked that this could even happen under the Teflon Fernadez regiem.
