Santos Domingo.-President Leonel Fernandez said the government will build houses for 193 meritorious students who were bestowed the "Highest academic excellence" distinction today.

The chief executive took the initiative after he saw a film showing the conditions under which students live. He noted that in spite of living in those appalling conditions they completed their studies with high grades.

The Education Ministry gave the students a certificate, a medal, a computer and a college scholarship in the ceremony held in the Ministry of the Armed Forces.

My complimets to those industrious students. It's never been easy to acquire a good education. It seems that the harder the conditions, the more purposeful the students are. Just like asians in the U.S. today, the more disadvantaged students achieve the highest grade. The world depression of 1930's prepared a generation that overcame extreme obstacles to survive and succed in the midst of devastating poverty.
I also believe these young people deserve the recognition and the awards they receive. For this aspect of Fernadez Reyna's administration, I agree completely. However, let's not get carried away with the 'giving'; that we revert to old-style Balaguer tactics. Handing out (as if it were yours) the state's property!

It's rare or perhaps the first time that such awards had been given out, that is , a house. This is not a tactics but a gesture and a decision to not only assists in just one area of these students needs. Their parents will greatly appreciate the opportunity to own what will be for them a real home/house, which will allowed the students to live and study in a much more comfortable settings. This is not a waste of state funds or resources but an investment on future dominicans that may someday provide the state with much greater rewards and services. They all should be congratulated and I wished them the best. The President did the right thing, so he too should be congratulated.
