Santiago .- The Police today dispersed dozens of Haitian and Dominican prostitutes who threatened to march naked through the streets of Santiago to protest alleged harassment and indiscriminate arrests by the authorities.

The Police however, asked the women to leave the area of the park where they planned to protest and arrested and later released those who resisted, according to North Region police spokesman Jesus Cordero Paredes. He denied that the prostitutes are beaten by the officers who patrol the area as some of the sex workers alleged.

The Haitian prostitutes in the area, all undocumented, were handed over to the Immigration authorities for subsequent repatriation, newspaper Diario Libre said.

Yahaira Jimenez, spokesman of prostitutes, said all her colleagues were ready to strip naked to protest the eviction.

A total waste of time and energy .. I suggest that the Dominican Police look for something more challenging .. like finding Osama Bin Laden in Waziristan .. then locate Bush-Cheney and put all three in the same cell with "bubba" .. they must be trying to emulate the phony pseudo-Puritanical-Victorian morals of their brother officers in the US .. this is just bloody ridiculous ..

Pappa,
No...but the police will turn the other way as always.....Is it no wonder why kids view there Mother's as a pleasure object, I just hope and pray that they don't view their future Wife's and Daughters in the same manner........Can we say repeat....By the the way in current day Afghanistan such behavior will result in stoning right ......Just ask my very good friend Taj Wardock Minister of Interior in Afghanistan, may God bless him .

FYI:

Prostitution is legal, although there are some prohibitions against sex with minors, and it is illegal for a third party to derive financial gain from prostitution. However, the government usually did not enforce prostitution laws. Sex tourism was a serious problem in Sosua and Boca Chica. Human rights groups reported continuing prostitution in sugarcane work camps and areas outside of the capital. NGOs conducted programs on prostitution and child sexual exploitation for hotel and industrial zone workers, male and female prostitutes, and other high-risk groups.

"While driving home last night via the Malecon there were more women out on the streets then I have ever seen since the mid 90's. For the past few months or since the Rio-Summit the police have been shooing them away , but it appears that this latest event in Santiago has reinforced the right to solicit.

Sad but as long as it is legal then not much can be done.

I believe prostitution is illegal in the DR. I do not think they any right to protest. If we let them do whatever they want then the young girls will not go to school and take the easy profession of selling their bodies for money. In a real capitalism country, people become competitive by going to school and start a career. Prostitute has the same right as a drug dealer. Drug dealers are on the street selling drugs because they do not have a real education and they do not know any other profession other than selling drugs. Now, just because that is their only way they know how to survive are we going to let them do their things? No. Because it is illegal. Now if the government makes prostitution legal then they have their rights, but in the mean time, they do not. The government must increase the funding in education in order to make disappear many of our problems.

True...And just think the scare of catching Aids was meet with "HEY USE THIS CONDOM AND HAVE PROTECTED SEX" or 1 beer OH ! ..2 beers HUH ! 3 beers "man look at that" 4-5 beers later WOW ! I think I'm in love what a beauty I gotta have it. Which only served as a false since of security....Just think before the act, you may might have gotten the little BUG ANY WAY kissing hugging grabbing and touching. You would not have a need drug dealers if there was no need for drugs and the same goes for the sex business. This issue goes back to the family and morals IF MEN WERE REAL MEN THEY WOULD NOT ABANDON THERE GIRLFRIENDS AND WIFES WHEN THEY KNOCKUM UP which result in a single Mother's who have no choice but to RENT HER BODY to make ends meet. We can start by teaching our male children to respect WOMAN for they have Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Aunt's, Grandmothers soon Girlfriends and hopefully Wifes which will be Mothers some day. JUST A THOUGHT, THAT'S ALL.

Zona Dominicana, what the hell are you saying? they are going to do whatever they want whether or not we allow them to protest. prostitution is one of the major industries in the DR. do you think that a few inconveniences sporadically occasioned by police antics is going to have any effect on the enterprise?
