New York.- The merengue and romp which characterize Dominicans electrified New York’s 6th Avenue on Sunday, when this community marked its traditional parade’s 26th anniversary and remembered its soldiers who’ve died in the Middle East conflict.
The threat of rain didn’t prevent thousands of Dominicans from converging from early morning along the Avenue of the Americas, as that important thoroughfare is also known.
The event also marks the country's 146th anniversary of the Restoration of Independence.

6th ave. Avenida de Las Americas. I can remember when it was held on CPW: Central Park West in the 1980's. So, to have it in Mid-Town is fabulous. Especially la Avenida de las Americas, of which DR, is the first America; remember?
I remember going to the Puerto Rican Day Parades as a kid when it was the only Hispanic parade. That was, and still is on 5th Ave. from El Barrio at 110 St. to 42 St. I felt out of place, yet, they never left our people out of "their" parade. We would have a few DR, in those parades. We were accepted. But, when we got our own thing; I was so proud.
But, gimme 6 Ave. anyday it's where the DR Consulate used to be next to Radio City Music Hall.
Happy 26 birthday, Desfile Dominicano, que viva nuestra gente!
