Santo Domingo. – As the curtain closes on the Constitutional Revisory Assembly’s debates most of Dominican Republic’s ruling party deputies threaten a “rebellion” against the decision by senior leaders not to confirm their candidacies and seek reelection.

The PLD deputies draft a document to present to the Political Committee, demanding the same treatment given to the senators, 90% of whose candidacies are reserved, while they were sent to compete.

A source quoted by news source listin.com.do said to press their point the displeased deputies “will not make the quorum” in the Revisory Assembly, where the party’s leaders push for approval of the constitutional reform.

They allege that at the start of the Assembly they were called to a meeting and were promised the method of surveys to avert a convention, but are now surprised that only 19 senate seats were reserved.

Among the “rebels,” the source said despite that some deputies whose survey figures lead in their jurisdictions, were sent to compete with rivals who’ve been campaigning for several months, while their presence in the Assembly has placed them at a disadvantage.

They complain that the deputies who seek senate seats were exempt despite not having a measurement which supports their aspiration.

Democracy went out the window when Hippolito and Leonel took office.

actually, Jim, democracy never ever came in the window. before Hippo, we had a benign dictatorship with Balaguer, whose predecessor was a virulent dictator. it was hoped that Hippo might usher in democracy, but he was too much of a buffoon to accomplish anything that lofty and cerebral. the celebrated Leonel has proven to be too much of an egomaniac to consider matters outside his own self aggrandisement, and, therefore, democracy is still a distant idea.

old school, i do not know what to make of this, whether you are making fun of me, or being serious. but i am really hoping for the day when some leader stops lining his pockets and his legacy, and gives the people a break. please send the tickets UPS. i have had too many bad experiences with the postal service. waiting 10 months for a package did nothing to amuse me.
