HIGÜEY.- Most of the transport of passengers, freight and tourists came to halt in the East region today when unions of bus owners staged a strike to demand road repairs, the construction of aqueducts, bridges and sewage systems.

The union leaders have only allowed the transport of the more than 14,000 tourists to and from the zone’s airports and hotels.

So far the peaceful protest has caused the closing of businesses, schools, as anti-riot police closely watch the roadways between Higüey and the different communities of the tourism region.

Manolo Ramirez, (Pupilo), of the union Conatra and spokesman of the strikers said the walkout will last until 6 p.m. Thursday, adding that they’ve allowed the transport of tourists “by virtue of prudence and as a demonstration that our position is neither radical nor political, but because of the problems that affect us.”

Dozens of buses are parked in front of the Basilica, whereas others were were placed at the exit to the Bavaro tourist zone.

Among the strikers’ demands are the construction of sewage systems and aqueducts in the communities Nisibón and Verón; the repairs of the roads in Altagracia province and Higüey, and the reconstruction of the bridges on the Higüey-Nisibón road, on the verge of collapse from damages by the storms Noel and Olga

They also demand the repair of the highways Higüey-La Romana, Higüey-Punta Cana, the restart of construction of the Tourist Boulevard; the repair of the roads Casa de Campo-La Romana Airport-Bayahíbe, Miches-El Seibo-Sabana de la Mar, Hato Mayor-San Pedro, and La Romana-San Pedro, among others.

Allthough I hate to agree with these Mafioso and their ways I have to agree with them. I just replaced 2 tires that had 6k kilometers on them because of bubbles on sidewalls. These roads are as bad as the Bagdad Airport after the US bombed it for 60 days.

I read on another site that a similar strike in a Santiago section was finally ended after ten days when repair crews showed up and began work. GC jokes about violence against people asking for basic services, but fact is this tactic can work. Roads must be fixed, next step corvee labor...

I wish it was only damage to tyres that was the problem on the SanPedro to Bavaro road but there are so many broken axles and so many head on collisions causing death and injury that this very important arterial road is as dangerous as anything else in the DR. last week near the Rio Chavon bridge there were 3 more serious accidents.

A major loss of life just waiting to happen? It already happened and it happened more than once. Remember August 15, 2008 when more than 20 people (tourist and Nationals) died in that horrible accident when two buses and a pickup truck crashed? Read "An open letter to the Dominican President, from L.F to LF” posted here in Dominicantoday on 29 August 2008, 3:51 PM
http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....letter-to-the-Dominican-President

And see the video but please BE AWARE that the video show horrifying scenes of mutilated bodies and body parts scattered near the collision site.
