Santo Domingo.– Writer Carlos Agramonte, author of a novel denouncing the existence of slavery on Dominican sugar plantations, said he will leave the country due to constant harassment since the work was published.

Agramonte, a professor of engineering at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, told the press he will leave the country next week. He announced the decision after complaining that “El sacerdote ingles” (The English Priest) had been removed from bookstores and unknown individuals were seeking to intimidate him.

In a letter sent to Dominican Attorney General Radhames Jimenez, Agramonte said that while heading home at night on March 3 he was pursued by unknown assailants trying to kill him. That incident, according to the writer, was one of several threats he has received.

He highlighted that a friend who is a high-ranking military officer advised him to leave the country for a while, saying his life is in danger. Published in January, “El sacerdote ingles” intertwines the fictional tale of doomed love between a Haitian female doctor and the scion of a Dominican sugar dynasty with the real-life story of Anglo-Spanish missionary priest Christopher Hartley and his defense of impoverished sugar-cane cutters.

I do not agree with this kind of persecution against the right of free speech. But also the writer wrote about a very controversial subject that fuels hate in many readers. He had to expect this kind of
response from the "dark forces" and not flowers to be sent to him.
Just like when Salman Rushdie wrote the "The Satanic verses" that caused that a "fatwa" demanding his death by the Ayatollah Khomeini.
The writer might also be stirring up public interest by sensationalist news such as this.
Carlos just move and change your telephone number, that is all. You should have used a pseudonym to market your book.

genoroso you cannot put lipstick on a pig ....Comparing the DR to Iran and telling the writer he should have used a pseudonym is pretty ugly stuff for a country that should have respect for free speech I mean "fatwas" are a little Medieval dont you think.....I take no position on the book and I am well aware of outside agitators with their agendas ....but the ability to speak freely supersedes all other freedoms

I know many people who have been threateded in the US,UK, Switzerland etc. Accept the fact that there is little free speach anywhere. University professors in the US have been forced out of their posts. Every year hundreds of journalists are killed - everywhere.
Sad but true.

Reread what I wrote and not misinterpret and mislead to political interpretations.
The writer is not being persecuted by a country but by unknown individuals.
If you have ever written anything in a public media, you know that your expressions of thought generate opinions and controversy. Some of them flammable and nothing unusual, more so in a country so politically opinionated and with many social bias as the DR.
So let the writer beware. (Caveat Scriptor).

The facts about the impoverished cane workers who are appear to be treated as slaves and live in atrocious conditions while being exploited by people who are making hundreds of millions of dollars every year and taking the profits from the exploitation out of the country is a story that must be told but which some people will try to suppress..
I would rank the conduct of the sugar industry here at the same level as the government corruption

This is the first time that I have heard of the book, and yes everyone should have the right to freedom to speech. I guess this is a plug for his book, I have looked up his name and he is written about in U.S. news papers.
This sounds like a great book, one should also try to look up the documentary the “Price of sugar”.

Free speech. period.

Oh I forgot LF said most of his countrymen are illiterate.

So it must be the ones that can supposedly read. This is the kind of BS you can expect from the 'smart' Dominicans. That does not say much.

Nothing but making a move to bring attention to the book. GM, If you don’t have a clue about the anti Dominican defamation campaign that started with the Homo/ child molester European priest, that would be reason enough for you to pull your head out of what orifice it is stuck in and get the facts.

By the way he is not going to be the first Dominican to leave and sure won't be the last one. Nice publicity stun. well done.

You guys missing the picture here. The govt is not harassing this person. Probably some outrageous Dominican who feel disgusted by this writer agenda and want to send him a message. If someone tries to blackmail a country I bet you some citizen of that country will feel outraged too. It could happen in any country. Probably nobody is threatening this NGO writer he is just raising the alarm to keep his propaganda afloat.

p.s. the Haitian people are the biggest masoquista you will ever know. I mean we treat these salvage so bad yet they keep coming like cucaracha.

This proHaitian wrote a story that never included the Dominican point of view on this matter! He just echoed the defamation and false accusations launched against DR! This is freedom of speech that instigate the erosion and destruction of DR! THIS IS PURE TREASON! He better leave!

If two people were really chasing him to kill him, he would have been dead! This excrement is just creating publicity again to the detriment of DR!

If we tolerate this excrement voice, then we must tolerate opinions that will go against the core of DR and its liberators!

dude, do you know what an NGO is? for a guy to ridicule a PhD, as you attempt to do with Baldoria, the first thing he should do is to get a minimal education first. i do not mind when you address asinine remarks to me, because i realise that you are a semi literate peasant who wants to insinuate himself into circle of people who can count beyond five. but have some respect for a man who has more academic qualifications in his toenails than you will acquire in ten lifetimes. it speaks to your absolute lack of civilised upbringing.

antonio, i stand corrected, and rightfully so! one can tolerate the occasional lapses in good taste, but this guy is insufferable, asinine, and a philistine of the lowest order .he does not even have the good sense to realise that he is way out of his depth, and seeks to set himself up as the new Pontiff of broadband. people laugh at his every remark, and he simply laughs along, thinking it is a game. connect him to an intelligence detector, and the needles would not move one iota. then he seeks to ridicule Baldoria, a man with a doctorate degree in his field of study. i have seen it all.

WHAT? I thought there was no racism in the DR, only in the bad old U.S.

I travelled a whole year in the southern states of the U.S. with my prieto criolla wife of 25 years. I was raised in the south. We never felt anything but love and graciousness from everyone the whole time.

Here a gringo must nonetheless tread carefully. But I could write a book like this in the Old South and reap nothing but praises. Doms, you got a long way to go.

After schooling you many times here you still don’t get the picture about me. I will ridicule Leonel himself if I feel in any way he is doing something detrimental to the well being of my country. Pelaut..you must be joking about no racism here in this country and the lack of love for a fellow man ,,it is rampant and just another result of poor education. There has been no war with Haiti since the 19th century and that country now is impoverished yet read here,ad nauseum, the total lack of care for these black people ..thank goodness, the french, germans italians, english ,japanese and americans have got over their spiffs a little more sensibly .
The combination here of an woeful catholic church and a corrupt government system is why there is such a long way to go.

why this country has a long way to go can be attributed in part to the fact that idiots like vacanos were born in it. who in Sam Hill is Jeremy Wright? the poor cretin just exposes himself to daily doses of ridicule, using the same tired old "afro centrist" nonsense on a daily basis. he is too retarded to realise that if you speak out against racism, it does not make you "afro centrist". i comprehend the fact that his limited mentality impairs his ability to offer anything intelligent, so i excuse his indiscretions. but it is high time that people with brains realise that by simple denying the existence of a condition, it will not go away. and, vacanos, the only job you are equipped to do with me is to squeegee my windshield.

I remember reading about this issue a while back and did not know it was still a hot topic. After reading all the comments, some of you took a left hand turn somewhere and got off the subject. The issue was the writter getting harassed for writing the book. Racism is a very delicate subject because it is very emotional and one person's point of view can be misconstrued. If the wrter is really getting harassed most likely it is from the sugar industry or a some crazy person that is ashamed of the book.
