In San Pedro province president Leonel Fernández begins what he calls “popular dialogues and democratic gatherings.”
SANTO DOMINGO.- Customs director Miguel Cocco yesterday blasted the corruption he described as the decay evident in many levels of government, and warned that the country will not advance out of poverty if “drastic” penalties aren’t applied.
He said against corruption the country “needs a hard and punishing hand that halts it."
According to Cocco, the officials who exhibit a behavior of opulence haven’t worked according to what professor Juan Bosch preached and taught, and have forgotten that “first it’s necessary to serve and not to serve oneself."
He said that although it’s certain that in all governments there are officials who commit indelicate acts, "we didn’t expect that indelicacies would be committed in a government headed by a party founded by an unpolluted man such as professor Juan Bosch."
He made it clear however that president Leonel Fernandez doesn’t have any type of complicity in the corruption which some officials could commit, since he has proven to be "a man whom money doesn’t interest him, that the personal accumulation of wealth doesn’t interest him.”
He said that at this moment of crisis, when funds are timid and absent, "it’s important and urgent to penalize all illicit acts, for which we must demand that each Dominican becomes an accusing finger against the officials who don’t carry out their duty."
Cocco, interviewed in the Colorvision program Aeromundo, urged Dominicans to become defending guardians of the properties of the nation and identify all the officials who flaunt a wealth they cannot prove who don’t do their job, and who exert their functions in detriment of the country’s resources.

Go get him Coco. The entitled corruption mentality must be stopped.
I have to disagree that LF is not accountable because he "doesn’t have any type of complicity in the corruption"
He is the commander in chief, he should act like one.

Funny posturing and also a bit late; after the crocodrile's eat their victims they shed tears, they are called "crocodile tears".
Also brings to mind " Let those without sins cast the first stone".

Thank you Captain Obvious. However it is nice to see some high profile folks starting to talk about this.

Interesting choice for the photo accompanying this story. Fernandez has no interest in accumulating wealth, but he also has no interest in stopping the rampant corruption that he knows exists.
Miguel Cocco for President!!!

This is almost too funny .."he has proven to be "a man whom money doesn’t interest him, that the personal accumulation of wealth doesn’t interest him"... 16 years ago, LF had nothing. sometimes had to ask neighbors to help push start is VW. His personal net worth exceeds $1.0 MM USD, although I have never actually seen his finacial statement. WTF, his wife's wardrobe alone is valued at > $200K USD. No, he has no intrest in his personal gain, perhaps he feels that he has aquired enough... and wishes to share with is friends!

No, it was RD$11 million. But just like his idol Balaguer, he's not interested in money but letting his cronies dip into the taxpayers' pockets guarantees a power base.

He isn't the commander in chief, he is the thief in chief. Take a look at the books of his foundation FUNGLOBE if you think not. What a joke. This whole country is a joke, never anyones fault, just the "ODDERGUYS".

Has level of corruption reached so deeply that govt feels it necessary to effect minimal levels of self-criticism to appease an increasingly angry populace? Perhaps they feel heat building up fast and realize they need to change their wicked practices, before the people rise and start hanging them from lamp posts for their gross and overt misdeeds. Nahh, principled men with real cojones have come and gone, and all that's left is men with little expectations, who are satisfied with whatever may come their way from a seemingly benevolent govt.

President Leonel Fernandez was not a rich man when he was elected president the first time around and now he is a multi millionaire.
He might not show the money he has but it is evident that he is,
He most likely has accounts in different countries and under different names.
Or why on earth would he the commander and chief allow such things to go on in his administration.
1. Baninter pardoning of banker Vivian Lubrano de Castillo and four of the men convicted in the Plan Renove fraud scandal.
2. Election Fraud or the buying of the election paid for by tax paying government funds and Sunla

2. Election Fraud or the buying of the election paid for by tax paying government funds and Sunland loan money.
3. US$130 million Sun Land loan,
4. Sale of Protected Areas
BANINTER, it happened under the PRD administration of Hippolito Mejia, but it has come to my understanding that LF is/ or was a member of such group.
The pardoning of known criminals like banker Vivian Lubrano de Castillo proves that LF has ties to such company.
Election Fraud and election buying has been proven, which under mines the Dominican Republics so called democracy.
Sale of Protected Areas
Why would the D.R. president allow protected areas be sold?
Why because he makes a cut of the deal and encourage the sale of such lands.
