Santo Domingo.– Two Dominican teenagers drowned while swimming in a rain-swollen river on a school trip and died Friday. According to Juan Manuel Mendez, Emergency
Operations Center director, the boys, ages 16
and 19, were part of a group of 21 students from a school in the
northern city of Santiago.
Mendez said Saturday that the two
teens went swimming in a rain-swollen river in the town of Jarabacoa.
They were identified as Victor de los Santos and Alvaro Diaz.
Parts
of the country have been hit by heavy rains, and flood
alerts have been issued in certain regions. People have been warned not
to cross rivers and to seek higher shelter.

From what I read in another article, one of these youngsters jumped in to help 2 or 3 girls that were in distress, then the second boy went in also to help, and unfortunately both drowned. I see this as being very tragic instead of just stupidity.
What I'm wondering though, is why were these students allowed to go in the water under those bad conditions? Was anyone looking after their safety? I also read that the principal was present, perhaps she can give some answers.

The circle of stupidity goes round and round.
They were not children They were teenagers who were stupid saving other stupid people under the care of other stupid people.

Guys,
Please show some respect. This is tragic news and we don't know all facts about it. It is possible they died a hero's death, trying to save other students. Let's wait until all facts are in and understood and let's not be too callous with our comments. These are someone's children and they do not need all of the gratuitous comments on stupidity, etc, on top of their deep grief.
I can empathize with situation, because I came very close to a similar fate on my twelfth birthday in family farm in Puerto Plata province. Another boy wasn't as lucky, however. Sad thing is my parents had lost their other son to leukemia only five years earlier.
Thank you.

These poor boys came from Cienfuegos in Santiago. When the news broke out, the parents and relatives destroyed the private school the kids attended in retribution for what they called a forced field trip to swollen river even though the area was under yellow alert due to the heavy rains.

Whatever the circumstances, another tragic accident.
My condolences to the family and friends.
These boys may have grown up to lead your wonderful country
down the right road to happiness!
We will never know now.
Again, my condolences to you.
