SANTO DOMINGO.- An Air France jet carrying more than 200 passengers had to return after 40 minutes into its flight to Paris, with mechanical problems in one of its engines.

The Boeing 747 took off at 9:23 p.m. from the Las Americas International Airport and the pilot radioed the failure to the control tower 40 minutes later.

First responders rushed to meet the plane, which can carry more than 400 passengers, and landed without incident.

Many of the panicked passengers were taken to the terminal, where airline employees attended them, whereas others were lodged in hotels in Santo Domingo, and others near the airport, to await another flight.

Air France technicians and mechanics checked the airplane Friday morning to determine the cause of the failure.
