Santo Domingo.– Rapper Lapiz Conciente was ordered released by a court after being
arrested by police in Santiago de los Caballeros on marijuana possession charges, the Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) reported.
According to the report, the performer will have to appear before the court in Santiago every 30 days. The judge imposed the same punishment on the two members of Lapiz Conciente’s group arrested with him.
Police
caught the rapper smoking marijuana inside a vehicle in Santiago’s La
Esmeralda section on Friday night. The “Tengo bajo a yerba” author was also in possession of a
quantity of the drug.
Avelino Junior Figueroa Rodriguez, best known as Lapiz Conciente, was arrested along with Yefim Mejia
Nuñez, known as “Big Key,” and Carlos Juan Gomez Monzon, who goes by
the stage name of “El DJ,” the DNCD said.

I don't get it. This guy gets caught. A guy with all of the traits of someone who is into ganja and gets caught. A rapper, a guy from the barrios. He was in his car and got caught. I still don't make sense of this. Of all the kids in private bilingual schools in both Santo Domingo and Santiago, Of all the artists who work and produce shows at Teatro Nacional. Of all those white colored, euro-looking people who do pot in the country, a guy from the barrio had to go and get "caught" by the police.
This is the same as having those poor, black kids from the barrios also get suspended by cheating on the Pruebas Nacionales when the others from the bilingual schools have been doing it for years. What's the message here, or am I being overly stupid?

It is really sad to read these type of comments. His attitude must not go unpunished given the law here, but what really bugs me is that the police caught the easy one and made an example out of it when thera are millions of others with clean white faces doing the same and worse since they are the customers to many dealers (small-time and black the majority) while the ugly morenitos get the ax.
On the other hand, criticizing these type of people by saying it is all their fault is sort of uneducated in itself since none of them has had the advantages others may have had, and are thus the result of both their bad decisions and the poor education they and their parents and the parents of their parents and their neighbors have received from the DR. NYCDR it seems you and I share the same viewpoints on this issue. It seems to me since I have young cousins in the teens in DR that these "rappers" are the type of people being looked up to by the youth of DR and that is a problem because these rappers just imitate the thug lifestyle of most of the U.S rappers. DR's youth seems to be on a very dangerous downward cycle, if this dumbing down of the population continues, in time DR will be more dependent on IMF/World Bank loans further indebting the country and making the entire population some debt slaves, more so then now. But sadly most people don't notice or care about these things.

We lose focus when we theorize why people behave the way they do. The youth need to get direction not disruption or in-depth analysis of whys? we need to show solutions by action plans not methodologies of why parents were ill equip. This only creates more static..you forget to focus on the goal. No one's past is perfect, when you focus on your life and you are honest and realistic about goals, the rest falls behind and you have a life worth living (for you).
There are so many people to look up to as benchmarks, why focus on the ones who gave up and are out of it.

I hope you have had the pleasure of traveling to other countries, poverty reaches a new level in other societies were little girls are married at the age of 6 or where girls have their most intimate part cut with an oxidated razor. This is the only country I know that for selling johnny cake the guy/girl has a crappy attitude, and works a few hours of the day and is unionized. Where doctors work until noon on Fridays. The poor go to resorts for the weekend. This is the only country I know that has at least 1 member of the family out side of the country and receives money without having to work for it and treats the relative like crap. This is the only country that has no money but all the colmadones are packed and every musical event with tickets worth over 70 dollars has a full house.

Also, the only country that I know of that offers a university that charges tuition based on your family situation. La USAD charges less if you are from a barrio, even less if you are an orphan, even less if you have an A average, offers you a meal for little money. Now if you are majoring in IT the government will pay for it in full. Yes, in full. This is the only country that you can become a doctor and have little to no debt...try that in the USA.. a doctor's debt is easily 80k or more.
You are going to say, the poor mentality will not allow them to take advantage of what is being offer...well, I can say this...Dominicans in general do more than they say and love to downplay what they earn...but if they are not taking advantage then...I will say the grace period has an expiration date...

Yes, a lot of alcohol abusers are diabetics and in male will cause impotence (one of the many side effects).
You mentioned the color card...my answer is as follows. You live in this world and you will have to interact with all sorts of ignorant fools...your money is power, spend it with whom you want and don't buy Jimenez's product, but why stop there. Why not try to consume morenito products and not have to give your money to the white dominicans : (

After all your nicely put ideas, I am still left with the feeling that the rapper was used as a scapegoat to show how evil he was since after all he used to rap about blunt. The other part of the pie goes unpunished since hey they may big consumers but they are not rapping about it.
You bring out a lot of good things that are out there about the country. The uasd part was the one that I agree with the most, together with the issue of remittances (which I believe also contribute to this kind of incidents). But I couldn't help feeling romanticism in your words when you mention how we go to resorts on weekends and whatnot. I found it a bit funny but it takes a lot to surprise me these days.
I wonder why is it so necessary to have examples to follow in this world, other than your own parents (the number one influence in one's life). People are neglecting this point a lot, and yet they put it on role models such as rappers, and "the apostle Duarte".
From: Dominican Republic
When someone misses his or her chance at profiting from education, that person most likely be a bad influence on the child or "young". There is no direct relation in seeing a guy smoking and then you becoming one. Moreover, if you come from a very uneducated household, plus you add that your friends are into the thing, the chances are very likely you will join the gang, since peer pressure is key, plus lack of control from your family circle.
The rest is just a poor justification. Again we are shifting the responsibility point where it is needed. The young are as fragile as we strategically want them to be in order to force a point of view in the public's opinion.
From: Dominican Republic
And finally the color card. Why not use the color card? Why go around that issue? As much as you have been free to use all of the words and ideas you have used, I can pick one that is often overlooked for fear of being called racist or anchored to a past we have surpassed somehow. I personally think I brought this point with a shade of gray, not an absolute statement. Nowadays everything seems to be either you are with me or against me. The in-betweens are not accepted. Some consider it a kind of weakness, but not in my case. I choose not to feel like that. I decide to embrace this position about the color with all of its consequences and therefore I am feeling free to use it in this (long) speech.
Blame it on the media maybe, but if you see a drug related news the photo that goes along with it is the one of a morenito from a poor (mostly a guy, yes let us bring the sex card too) barrio. Usually the dealer or the consumer.
From: Dominican Republic
I have yet to read about one of the white-faced celebrities are caught using pot. They use it by the lots. They can even afford it more than the average barrio person since they have more consumer surplus by definition. Why not go to them? If those rich people are spotted I am pretty sure the consumerism of drugs will decline since they are the big spenders. They need the dealers from the barrios, but these people won't be and hence we end up with a smoke screen in the battle for drugs.
Now that I reread myself, this is not an issue of color, it is an issue of social class. An issue also overlooked by many, as are all of the obvious ones.
Finally, I must give it to you Nycdr but keeping this topic going with the respect it deserves for the good of the average dominican today reader (like myself). Thanks.

The number of people who come out of parents who drank and poor conditions and went ahead to become someone of value to society are more than you think.
Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Abraham Lincoln to name some, they don't have to be dominican to be someone you can take something from and apply to your life to better yourself.

I think it is ok to play the color card (the social status card to be more precise), since no one hardly ever mentions it. I think it is time people start noticing. I don't intend to change people's mind whatsoever. I am just saying this because I want to plain and simple. It adds something to my arguments I believe.
Just because you say I may turn up like one of those preachers (whoever they may be) does not mean I have to stop using "the card". It is simply your own opinion and by such I respect it.

I think that if we start acknowledging that a country is not only affected by its poor demographics we may have to shifting the scale so it starts weighing on those better off that are also part of the problem but are so lucky to be exempted since they belong to good families or have friends in high places. No one ever mentions the rich people that consume drugs by the lots since they are able to pa
I am not defending this guy. He must pay since he broke the law. I don't think he is a threat to the "young" since there are other more dangerous threats to the "young" that will have more severe effects in the long run, such as those measures government is not looking out for in the Constitution. But hey this rapper is a bigger threat because he is the news (just by smoking pot really oh my) People pass out from beers and whiskey every weekend and no one battes an eyelas, but The León Jiménez Family they are an example of the benefits of being rich and white. No one dares to point a finger at them.
Funny thing is that our children would rather emulate this guy rather than someone more worthy such as Angela Hanna Goulene, the young author of French-Camerounian ancestry in DR, who was recently featured in DT story.
Go figure. Where have we parents gone wrong?
We lose focus when we theorize why people behave the way they do. The youth need to get direction not disruption or in-depth analysis of whys? we need to show solutions by action plans not methodologies of why parents were ill equip. This only creates more static..you forget to focus on the goal. No one's past is perfect, when you focus on your life and you are honest and realistic about goals, the rest falls behind and you have a life worth living (for you).
There are so many people to look up to as benchmarks, why focus on the ones who gave up and are out of it.
answer...continue
This is also laughable.
Again, static. We are raising people who can't put a sentence together to the level of real thinkers ahead of their time whose theories are applied and will be applied in different disciplines in academia.
Lets continue...you talk about the fact that we need to face the fact that DR is a poor country. I hope you have had the pleasure of traveling to other countries, poverty reaches a new level in other societies were little girls are married at the age of 6 or where girls have their most intimate part cut with an oxidated razor. Or places where the town people drink for days and beat each other up with participants as young as 5 yrs old. but again, let us focus on DR...

Listen, statistic show that one out of every household in a barrio has a drinking problem in DR. My position on this issue is any substance abuse of any kind is something I don't approve.
Why not try to consume morenito products and not have to give your money to the white dominicans : (
this is just plain ignorant. If you check statistics you will find that the majority of hard liquor are the middle class not the poor. and if you checked they are not that dark.

I wish you the best.

I hope his not related with the last two arrest.
Was DA STUFF Sencimilla, Acapulco gold, Chronic, Thia Stick, Purple Hair, Red Hair, X-mas Bud, Crystal Goo, Maui Wee WOW Wee, Humboldt County special etc..etc..
Maybe in Court He'll flash a Medical Use Marijuana Card or a GREEN $$ Card and walk.
I just hope the Dominican Youth don't look to this RAPPER as a role Model and follow his foot steps.
GOD save the DR from DA GREEN STUFF, the Golly Green Giant.
The rest is just a poor justification. Again we are shifting the responsibility point where it is needed. The young are as fragile as we strategically want them to be in order to force a point of view in the public's opinion.
Blame it on the media maybe, but if you see a drug related news the photo that goes along with it is the one of a morenito from a poor (mostly a guy, yes let us bring the sex card too) barrio. Usually the dealer or the consumer.
Now that I reread myself, this is not an issue of color, it is an issue of social class. An issue also overlooked by many, as are all of the obvious ones.
Finally, I must give it to you Nycdr but keeping this topic going with the respect it deserves for the good of the average dominican today reader (like myself). Thanks.
NYCDR After all these posting, El Lapiz is coming to you for some real writing material lol. I see the potential there!.............
No thanks, I am more of a math person...I leave that to Lapiz..he needs the practice...
LMAO...

I don't know who you know, but I must say ask around and let them talk (not lies, facts), remember a lot of them down play their conditions to see what they can gain from you.
The number of people who come out of parents who drank and poor conditions and went ahead to become someone of value to society are more than you think.
Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Abraham Lincoln to name some, they don't have to be dominican to be someone you can take something from and apply to your life to better yourself.
You talk peer pressure, dude we have all been around drugs and alcohol is an independent decision to either use it or not. I have not seen or heard any one force any one to use drugs or alcohol, you are offered and you chose to use it or not. : (
You will say but the youth want to fit in...nonsense, even a baby knows when they are doing bad because when they do touch something they shouldn't they look at you for approval or disapproval....give the youth more credit... gosh man!
You must be joking, you must see ET on TV so that you can hear again and again how celebrities have all sorts of drug and alcohol problems. and yes people identify with them.
Did you mean that Lapiz got caught cause he is not a white dominican? He got caught cause he was doing drugs period. If this was alex bueno in the car, you think that he would have been overlooked?
My advise to you for your own good is don't play the color card, it will get you nowhere you will sound like the preachers on the corner that everyone sees and no one really cares for what they are saying.

I don't think people need heroes nor examples beyond those that they can find within their households or communities. People can surmount obstacles, in fact we have done it all the time.
Good for you if you have great role models in your household.
I will say this, you can only be the best person you can be and pray that God gives you the opportunity to live a life worth living.
You can bring up the color issue but the truth will still be the same:crime is done by those who break the law no matter what color. I have always said if white people are not committing crime then I will be the only minority living in an all white neighbor. I have worked in the NY Court system, trust me the facts are the facts...
I wish you the very best.

WOW ! What an response HUH !
I backed off and just read and sounded to Me like a ping-pong or a Tennis match with each other pumping the other up .....40 something entrees later one would think they either know this Rapper Rat Crapper His Family or are Fans.
"Best to the Best" does sound a bit SINGULAR.......How about thinking all around FACT vs. FICTION.
"The abuse excuse" works all the time.
Just let me know when you wanna talk SOLUTIONS, I'M GAME.
Milton stay away from "Just stick it" until you hear the other sideS view in order to reach the truth, I do understand.....
NYCDR TAKE CARE.
In short, we will agree to disagree in certain issues.
As you request, The abuse excuse, is not enough. If you read closely I already suggested a solution.
Mrios, we have had our exchanges and you know I will not back down on my views....
You take good care too!!!
Facts vs. Witch hunt.

Thank you for your kind response. Disagreement is so vital in a Free Society.
Question do the Witches do Drugs ? ha ha ha !
Facts & Truth should always go hand in hand.
Ever heard of the American Spring Break ? talk about under aged Boozing and drug use, all part of modern Day Schooling.
If you don't mind me asking was that the Juvenile or Adult NY Court system and was it Criminal, Family Law or Civil ? you don't have to answer.
Take care.
