Beijing.– Cuba rallied past Poland 3-1 here on Saturday for its opening victory at the Beijing Games women's volleyball tournament.

The three-time Olympic champion beat the Polish women 21-25, 25- 17, 25-20 and 25-17 in the preliminary match of pool A in front of 14,000 spectators at the Capital Gymnasium.

"We did not start very well in the first set, but fortunately we were able to make quick adjustments and played better in the next three sets," said Cuba head coach Antonio Perdomo.

"We had very good preparations for this game, especially on blocking against the tall Polish players," he added. "I am very happy it worked out for us."

Cuba finished with seven blocking points, just one shy of their much taller opponents.

"We thought it would be a very very difficult match for us," said Yumilka Ruiz, who had 12 smashes in 18 tries to contribute 12 points for Cuba. "The result gave us more confidence."

Ruiz was among five Cuban players in double scoring digits with Nancy Carrillo topping the list by notching 18 points on 17-for-20 spiking.

Herr Doktor Johann .. you are obviously referring to the Cuban proclivity for "defections" to the US .. just a mere subset of the larger issue of migration Herr Doktor .. MONEY .. remember "El Duque"? .. MONEY in his pocket .. he tried twice and the second time was a charm .. the US makes a big deal about this kind of stuff because it serves as an embarassment to their Cold War nemesis .. when the dust settles on the way to the El Banco .. the end results are pretty much the same .. MORE MONEY .. Jawohl Herr Doktor Johann?

Where did I write that I had a problem with MONEY? Did I say that? Are you reading impaired? A problem with understanding simple written English? I said MONEY is an important motivation for migration. Especially migration to the US from third world countries like Cuba and the DR. I never said I had a PROBLEM with it? I never filed a complaint against MONEY. Did I? I think me sticking all those pins into that George Bush doll is starting to affect YOU instead. Or maybe it comes from your being repeatedly beaten about the head on each and every blog you visit. Good. I'll just keep sticking more and more pins into the damned thing. Things are really hard in the early going for the Cubans, LA/C best hope for glory in the 2008 Olympics.

The Cubans barely missed a gold medal in one of the female divisions of the martial arts, but they had to settle for silver. The Cubans won a bronze in something. So, just two medals and neither gold.

So far after 3 days of competition, Olympics is a fierce batter for glory between the Chinese and S. Koreans. The USAs occupy 3rd place, something of an embarassment.

Shockingly, neither the Russians nor the Germans have won any gold. They are as goldless as the Cubans.

This whole Olympics thing is a sham and waste of money. The 2004 Athens' Olympics cost $12 BILLION. The 2008 Beijing Olympics will cost China about $40 BILLION. The Chinese should have spent this hard earned cash on cleaning up the pollution caused by their rapid economic expansion .. providing assistance to the millions displaced by the 3-Gorges Dam.. improving their shoddy human rights record. Instead of wasting their time and money on this frivolous beauty pagent. Three thousand years of history and they still cannot THINK.

METALS COUNT

p. 1

"Really? last count has the US only 2 medals behind the Chinese," AC uses his remarkable talent for being factually correct and misleading at the same time.

oooo

A number of outlets of the US capitalist press at the moment rank Olympic countries by "Total medals," not by the conventional ranking based "gold metals" won.

http://scoreboards.aol.com/olympics/medals.asp

So, using this trick with "total medals," Chinese now has 14, the USA 12, and S Korea and Italy are tied for 3rd place in total medals at 8 each.

AC is technically right, "US [is] only 2 medals behind the Chinese."

This "total medals" fraud lifts the USA from 3rd place where it belongs based on gold to an undeserved 2nd place based on 'total medals."

The US capitalist press never uses this trick or fraud unless US delegation is lower than 2nd place.

MEATALS COUNT

p.2

Here are the official rules for ranking countries and the US capitalist press recognizes these rules when it is not embarassed by a US team that is lower than 2nd place.

"The ranking in this table is based on information provided by the International Olympic Committee. The ranking sorts by the number of gold medals earned by a country. The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze medals. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically by IOC country code.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_olympic_medal_count

Using the official ranking, China in 1st place with 9 golds leads the USA ... which is tied with Italy for 3rd place both with only 3 gold each ... by 6 golds, not "only 2 medals" as AC misleadingly maintains.

S Korea occupies 2nd place in the offical ranking with 4 golds or 1 gold ahead of the USA in an embarassing 3rd place.

0000

Perhaps some are not surprised at the Chinese lead in their home country and the Chinese use of state funds for peaceful purposes rather than for homicide and genocide in Iraq and elsewhere.

AC, using his doctored ranking of "only two medals," deliberately ignores that S. Korea in 2nd place is, like China, also ahead in the early going of the USA.

But South Korea is not in its home country.

And Samsung has a lot to do with South Korean team.

Managua, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan ambassador to Managua Sergio Rodriguez told Prensa Latina the construction of an oil refinery in Nicaragua is on schedule.

As part of the ALBA (Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas) cooperation program, the first shipment of Nicaraguan heifers was sent to Venezuela. Another shipment is due within the next few day.

Nicaragua is also selling beef to Venezuela's local state markets known as Mercal. Milk and chicken will soon add to Nicaragua's exports, he said.

In 2000, Iraq converted all its oil sales under the Oil for Food program to euros. When U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003, it returned oil sales to the USD.

DR pays its petrocaribe sales in USD even when it doesn't have to.

Pool A of women's volleyball has China, Cuba, Japan, USA, Poland, Venezuela.

As of the third day of competition, China and Cuba are tied for 1st place with a W-L records of 4-0, followed by Japan and USA tied in 2nd place, both with 3-1.

Poland and Venezuela bring up the rear of Pool A with 2-0.

Pool B has Brazil, Serbia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Algeria.

As of the third day of competition, Brazil, Serbia, and Italy share a 3-way tie for 1st place in Pool B with 4-2.

Mind-blowing tie!

The others in Pool B don't matter.

CONCLUSION

This is perhaps the toughest competition so far in the olympics. Both pools are strong, but Pool B with a 3-way ties for 1st place seems off the charts.

Cuba's next match in women's volleyball is Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 8:00 AM (EST) against China, favored by many to take the gold in the event.

It's unlikely that the capitalist network TV in the USA will broadcast this match since the US volleyball team isn't involved. Perhaps, however, we'll get a few breakaway excerpts. oooo

I suppose AC is hinting that I inhabit a peculiar state of being that lies separate and apart from the reality in which AC exists. Thus, AC is curious about the color of sky in this private reality in which he believes I reside.

AC hopes to laugh at the sky above me.

There is only one reality and in it I reside and I remain. Everything outside of the one reality is nothingness and ignorance.

Aristotle found two forms of nescience [or ignorance] -- false belief and no belief.

The so-called "reality" of AC is false belief and its sky is always dark as well as everything else about it.

oooo

Your link, cited above, gives the self-serving and unofficial methodology [presented by Chevrolet] for ranking Olympics participants by "total metals."

Silver and bronze, in one sense, are winners compared to many with nothing. But in another sense, silver and bronze are losers compared to gold.

IOC and the world world uses "gold" to rank olympics participants, except, of course, the embarrassed and self-serving US capitalist media which deceptively elevates the USA into undeserved 1st place by a switch of methodology.

Anyway, here's the official ranking based on gold, not the rigged "bronze" one:

Havana, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) Any Cuban citizen might wake up, startled in the early morning by shouting neighbors nervous because of the performance of one of the Cuban athletes in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Every morning, it is common to see a dialogue between two people. One of them tells the other he feels sleepy because he could not get to sleep.

He or she could be one of those people who are following the competitions of the Cuban athletes during the 2008 Games in the early morning, leaving the retransmission of the programs to those who preferred to go to sleep.

Discussions come from everywhere -- in a corner, a park, a bus stop, a working center, or an office and about anything -- the athletes, moves, decisions of the umpires and the judges.
