New York.- Dominican swimmer Marcos Diaz yesterday presented in the United Nations Building in his project “Swim of the Continents with the United Nations,” in which he’ll attempt a swim of the world’s five land masses.

Diaz said his swim, from May to August, 2010, is to promote a message of peace and against poverty, as stated in to fulfill the Development Objectives of the Millennium.

“Around the world, the gap of poverty is still too wide. With this initiative I hope that we all, rich and poor, governments and industries, men and women to become aware of just how far we are from fulfilling the Development Objectives of the Millennium agreed by the United Nations almost 10 years ago,” said Diaz in the press conference.

Forgive me for being dense, but I fail to see the point of this initiative.

WTH does a swimming feat have to do with promotion of peace and poverty awareness?

Will peace symbol-arrying hippies be swimming with him? Will the poor and destitute swim with him?

WTH does swimming have to do with these objectives anyway?

This all seems to me like far-left and liberal initiatives, and nothing else. Overflowing with symbolism, yet devoid of substance.

This is well-intentioned but hopelessly meaningless. Mr. Diaz could best promote his objectives through some more realistic and tangible means of generating finances to alleviate plight of poor. The subject of peace is way too complicated, bordering on being intangible, to discuss. You can't read people's minds, and what they tell you versus what they mean and feel could be very, very different, so let's not be too naive on subject.

continents - five land masses?
How come he is only doing 4?
BTW, USA consider North America as a continent. Marcos might have to swim the great waters of the Panama canal!!!
