New York.– Former US baseball player Sammy Sosa has sparked speculation that he is undergoing skin-lightening treatment after appearing at an awards ceremony with dramatically paler skin than usual.

The Dominican was photographed at last week's Latin Grammy Awards with startlingly light skin. The images were in stark contrast to his appearance at an event in June.

A spokeswoman for the 40-year-old blamed the difference in skin colour on lighting at the event and a 'rejuvenation process for his skin.'

Rebecca Polihronis said: 'He's not trying to be Michael Jackson. The picture is deceiving. I thought it was a body double. People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can't believe it is such a big deal.

"He was surprised he came out looking so white. He said: "If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture,"'she added.

Lol wow,

It is as if Michael Jackson did not use all sort of excuses in the book to say that he did not skin bleached himself. Look I do not care if a human being feels unhappy with themselves and wish to change certain things about themselves much like people whiten teeth, wear extensions, weave and straighten their hairs and stuff.

It is whatever makes one happy to find contentment in their own lives. However, what I do not stand is people making excuses for the changes they have made to themselves. If you feel unhappy and wish to bleach your skin, at least have balls to say that you did it because you were not happy with the look you had before and you made a decision to make yourself happy much like those who undergo plastic surgery with nose, lips jobs, botox facelifts, boobs, penis and even butt jobs.

To be honest, I do not care what one does. Just have the balls to say that it is your body and you do as you have chosen to be pleased to do with your body period.

Pea brain Sammy thinks the public is stupid. First with the cork in his bat, then the lies about taking steroids, now denial about his skin bleaching, hair straightening and wearing green colored contacts. His wife Sonia also had a boob job, which is evident. Sammy come clean with the fans, and don't be such a BS artist, you are not fooling anyone.

I will never stop liking this guy, i know the cork and all this crap he still gave us the memorable summer home run classic with Mark McGuire back in 1998. You really needed to be here to appreciate such euphoria and pride that we walked around with during those days.

The most memorable time was one day i was visiting some friends in WH, and every car began blowing their horns, i knew, Sosa stroked again. For this I will always support this guy what ever color he decides to be.

This can't be good....this man will lose any respect anyone might have had for him. This sort of shows me he is shallow and lacking in character. I further question his Dominican machismo, for none of the Dominican men I know, myself very much included, would ever consider doing anything like this. Dominican men, by nature, are predisposed to be macho, pursue women incessantly and eschew anything in a man that could even hint of femininity.

I feel sorry for this man, and hope he will find whatever he seeks and reach whatever measure of happiness and acceptance he requires. However, he will not be doing any favors to Dominican men's pride and machismo. What will he do next-undergo a sex change? For God's sake, give us a break!

Blu, I agree with the "CORKY" statement, however, it is true to note that the guy place Dominican ball players in a bigger map and leveled ball field than Marichal. Now, before you get confused, let me elementarize such statement, what this means is that more basebal fans around the globe know Sosa more than Marichal, even third generational Dominicans will have difficulties talking about Marichal's feats in the sport. But I am sure they know Sosa.

It looks like we finally have an explanation behind that widely-circulated picture in which Sammy Sosa(notes) appears as a combination of a Twilight extra, a big Charlie Chaplin fan and someone who is taking the death of Michael Jackson just a little bit too hard.

According to a friend of Sosa's, the former Cubs slugger is (thankfully) not suffering from Vitiligo or another type of disease. Sosa's appearance, rather, is a result of an elective "rejuvenation process" for his skin and he was apparently "surprised" when he came out looking whiter than his old home run buddy, Mark McGwire.

First of all everyone is jumping on Sosa like he committed a crime...

I do not agree with anyone not accepting their true state but that is MY opinion and I have no right to impose it on others.

Secondly ,it is a double standard because nobody complains when white people tan themselves to get darker or in the 60's and 70's when many whites had "Fros" .There is silence when white ladies get those dread like things on their hair,so why does everyone beat up on Sammy Sosa?

My problem with Sammy was the cork in his bat ,but people in this forum who would support someone coming out in drag and support a million hypocrisies from politicians they like make a HUGE deal about something that if true would be his PERSONAL life .

Now I liked telling Michael Jackson jokes like the rest but this is starting to feel like a witch hunt.

Are you making it personal? Or did you mean to say: if he wants to dress in drags and paint his hair orange........attention getting? Pepe,

My remark should not have been offensive to you all, as all it clearly connoted was that Sammy had defenders. It didn't label them as good or bad-just defenders!

I am an old-fashioned Dominican to whom being a man and everything manly is important. We are a far-thowback from another era, a much better and respectful period than we clearly enjoy now; we totally eschewed everything feminine in a man, and were hopeless womanizers.

We adhere to a moral code full of rectitude, are loyal friends and respect the elderly. We are God-fearing and treasure country and culture. We don't have much respect for LF, however.

The only thing worse than being labeled a traitor or ladron, would be any allusion associated with anything effeminate; that's why I took offense to your comment above.

Hope you'll understand.

I visited Consuelo this last August and was shown the house where Sammy Sosa was allegedly born. I was told that he moved to San Pedro de Macoris while still a youngster. Further, I was made to understand that he is a "Cocolo" i.e. descendant from migrant workers from the English speaking Caribbean, specifically the island of Nevis, West Indies. The young lady that told me this indicated that he used to perform chores for her grandmother, who was actually born on the island of St. Kitts (the capitol of the St. Kitts/Nevis Federation). She further stated that many of the folks in their hometown are not happy with the way he ignores this part of his heritage. That being said, I'm not surprised by his skin lightening treatments and green contact lenses any more than i am surprised at the number of Dominican baseball players sporting jerri curls.

This issue has become a run away problem for Sosa, who is day by day in decline around the sport. The news has even reached some the main news networks here and now even MSNBC, ESPN NEWS, ESPN DEPORTES, FOX and others are running stories about such debacle in Sosa's life.

Clearly, something was done to clean he skin, but it either went too far or the intention was there from the get go. I believe that Sosa, should come out and speak about the situation in the mainstream media here in the U.S., since many sport forums are going wild as well. This time i hope that Sosa will not play the game of , "YO NO HABLO INGLES, VERY VERY SORRY FOR YOU MY FRIEND".

On another note, pepe32, i hope that you do not built houses or bridges, because as angry as you are about the haitian sistuation, you might miscalculate the load bearing rating or wind rating of the structure if you see a haitian walking by. So my best advise is to stick to the farm my friend.

Blu, since when do you actually think or though that Sammy had a shot at the hall of fame? Even if this is one your uncontrollable urges to type away, you are looking foolish indeed by mentioning the hall of fame and Sosa in the same sentence. I think that you do not follow baseball at all to even think that the 'CORK' incident tarnished his chances of entering the hall, wow.

I was simply recalling those days of the summer of 1998, whatever the issue or case now, if you lived those days, then you'll remember. It was a fun time to be a baseball fan and going to games to watch what he or Guire will do, i at least had lots of fun watching it.

We all know that other PED users will get in and we can not forget what he did for the game back then. After the umpire strike in the 90's NBA, and NHL had better ratings than baseball. As far as Sammy being in denial you are correct but your other statement is really off. We have Chinese-Dominicans ,Japanese-Dominicans,Dutch-Dominicans and of course Criollos who don't even have a speck behind their ears. My grandparents were all born outside DR (2 in Lebanon and 2 in Northern Spain ) yet my parents were born and met in DR and I was born in DR and I am as Dominican (or more) than many "faux" Dominicans who live in the US and know very little about DR and who act and think more like Black Americans and are influenced by their racial attitudes.

Also the opposite could apply to many which in the racist views of the US are called black ...we could say "tienen el blanco detrás de la oreja" in other words we are who we are ...a small percentage of pure blacks (Mainly Haitians) a majority of mixed blood (black, white and Taino) and another small group of whites. The majority range from dark chocolate to almost Iberian/Mediterranean features and in some areas strong Taino features .We have Blacks in Samaná descended from freed US slaves and in San Pedro blacks from the US VI...both these groups have English surnames instead of Spanish. We have in the border with Haiti and obvious
Haitian influence ,In Constanza descendants of Japanese who came to DR and mainly in the central Cibao the descendants of the Spanish (and Portuguese) who came in successive waves. In Bani we have the descendants of many families from the Canary Islands .

Anyhow I could go on but the point is that we are a MULTICULTURAL nation and anyone who does not

However, in all the nonsense you wrote there is one revealing statement:

"I do not have any negroid blood inside of my although many in my family have intermarried so the next generations of the family will be mixed just like most of DR ."

Which contradicts this statement "As a people (In general) Dominicans have 3 races in their bloodlines and nobody here has contradicted that."

Pepito you are obsessed with being “white” (whatever that means) and are extremely fearful at even the suggestion of that not being the case. You even make it a point to identify your alleged Spanish origin from an area of Spain which was not “contaminated” by the dark skinned Moors.
