Moca.- The Caribbean Network Access Point (NAP), a company similar to Miami’s NAP of the Americas and which is the United States’ main connectivity center, will be inaugurated this month, said the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) president Jose Rafael Vargas.

“The NAP of the Caribbean, the most important connectivity center for the Caribbean and Central America region already begins to operate in the Dominican Republic,” official said.

Vargas speaking in La Isleta, Moca during the inaugural of a digital room, a kitchen and a dining room in the school La Milagrosa, said the NAP of the Americas interconnects all the important agencies of the U.S. federal government, Congress, and the Library of Congress.

He said NAP of the Americas decided to establish another NAP in the Dominican Republic, to serve as connectivity center for all Latin America "and from here towards the rest of the world."

CWA survey: average broadband speed in US is 1.9Mbps

By Jacqui Cheng | Published: May 29, 2007 - 09:01AM CT

Broadband speeds in the US are abysmal compared to the offerings from other developed countries, according to the Communication Workers of America. The organization conducted its own download/upload speed tests online, which were taken by roughly 67,000 people across the country, and concluded that the average download speed in the US was 1.9Mbps. According to CWA president Larry Cohen, "the results are deeply troubling."

Various states appear to have much higher averages than others. For example, Illinois appears to be just above the national average at 2.1Mbps down, with New York's average at 3.4Mbps and California's at 1.5Mbps. Rhode Island appeared to have the fastest average download speed, according to CWA's data, at 5.0Mbps, with Kansas coming in second with an average of 4.1Mbps.

The data, says the CWA, is in in stark contrast to broadband speeds available in other countries. The organization compared its own survey data to numbers provided by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation's "Assessing Broadband in America" (PDF) report, which showed that countries such as Japan and even our closest neighbor of Canada have significantly higher broadband download speeds—6.1Mbps and 7.6Mbps, respectively.

In an Island where goods and services are primarily limited to goods that come from the land and where the services are limited to tourism, we the people are at the whim of the puppeteers that inject hope. We would much rather be at the cutting edge of industries, producing real economic goods that sell at high prices, allowing the employees to earn more on a yearly basis. Instead we have the heads of politics time and time again indicate change at the next election. Sure we benefit from a lagging technology boom, but it takes a lot more to complete in this world economy. It takes for the courts to uphold honesty and protect future home grown investors for one. It takes government to provide the information and the infrastructure for the learning and the creativity of industries. The cycle is seem (and not that I am at all interested in politics) time and time again.

Our industries again derive from the land and the land is very ill efficient as we know it in our country. So why not use the spell checker when you post your thoughts so that we may take them in a more serous light? We can get nowhere by saying our beaches are beautiful, but little progress is made with the dividends of those industries. It is not enough to rely on the beauty of the people and the character of the laymen. Like some one said earlier, lets have basics first like water and electricity.

One may ask why people get incited like lemmings in a lemming like behavior where all that is needed is for someone to show the way and like cattle all other follow. And leaders on their own I would suspect make the conscious decision to preempt the lemmings and gather and incite them to the point of violence. Let us be more real here for a moment, in our country the only business that makes one better off is non other that being at the top in a political office from where one can just open ones purse or wallet and fill them up. You must agree that that is what takes place in light of how difficult it is to change the economics of an Island that does not produce adequate goods that people want to buy in economic quantities and prices.

Balaguer positioned the country as one of the most advanced in telecommunications and transportation infrastructure in his era. But this was all a farce as the country infrastructure was rotting. Balaguer would build a brand new structure with an impeccable visage but on the inside lacking basic services such as running water for toilets and lavatories. Not even the airport in his time had decent restrooms or visitor services.

And yes Fernandez has made much positive change in the country. But He has lost focus in priorities and is now on the same road Balaguer took. Though I must admit of the two evils I would prefer Fernandez.
