La Romana.- A girl’s eyes light up with astonishment, incredulity and innocence when she "clicked” a computer menu in front of her to access the Earth Sciences chapter provided by the Encyclopedia Encarta.

The students of the Adamanay grade school on Saona Island will now have access to Internet, as part of the communication network to help with their education.

Dominican Telecommunications Institute president (Indotel) Jose Rafael Vargas yesterday headed the inaugural of the Communications and Computer center, which ends the island’s historical isolation from the world

Government officials, media executives and lawmakers attended the ceremony.

There are a few good men in the DR that show real leadership. I always see Vargas in the news doing great things to invest in the future of the DR. These investments in education & access to information will make youth more educated, productive workers with computer skills that do NOT exists in the workforce today. An improved drug-free workplace will make the DR more globally competitivie and thus attract more international businesses to bring in more jobs (i.e. call centers to support the latino market in the US & Canada).

Since Vargas is doing this ....I am just not sure why the RD Gov leaders are NOT?

Josean, I'm not sure Leonel could have gottten all the money he did for the metro to help build the educational system. Remember at least from the metro you will generate funds. How will you generate funds by developing the educational system? It's just one big social expense with a rate of return with hte development of society which is the back-bone of a country. I agree it needs to happen but the President won't get much support from abroad via loans for such project. It would be very tough to pay back the loans when it's a social spending project.
