Well-deserved for Miss Venezuela; she was definitely the most beautiful. Miss Dominican Republic did spectacularly well and reached 2nd finalist position. That is truly commendable. She was very pretty and I thought she did much better with the judge's questions than Miss Venezuela. Good for both of them.

Goulet colonial you are not Latin American. So you are not able to understand the beauty pageant mania of us Latinos. Just like baseball, they have become part of our culture. Besides, the dominican girls that are sent to these pageants are always university students, and very well educated. It is just a game, but isn't everything in life just a game? I could say the same about baseball, the olympics, football, basketball etc.

You are right. I understand many people's apathy of pageants. But beauty pageants cannot be thought away from entertainment business in Latin America. In fact, many actresses, tv personalities and tv hosts come from the pageant scene. To think of beauty pageants as any less than of for example a football match is a plainly sexist thing to say, and is measuring with doubble standards. These girls work very hard and it takes months and sometimes years of preparation in the gym etc to look as good as they do. So they deserve some respect and their efforts should be appreciated. Just as the efforts of men who excell in sports and other fields are appreciated. Besides, they are proudly representing their countries and they are mostly well educated and concerned with problems in society.

The advertising...of all the ads I saw from the DR's top beer producer...to insurance...to cars and daily usage products.....all white Dominicans...even the mulatto Dominicans got that special "white face" treatment! Even moreso than the Michael Vargas campaign posters!
I did not realize that this country was so white! Truth in advertising???? I think not!
I guess in this country...to drink a beer, drive a car, or have a job...you must be a white Dominican.

People, what's up with all these conspiracy theories and political issues? I'm just happy that dominicans are being potrayed in a positive light. Buenoha makes good points; these women do more afterwards than show up in ads and look pretty- they apparently are AIDS activists and globe trot for good causes.
Puntacana Mike: No, not every dominican commericial has white dominicans in it, and even if they did, they wouldn't be doing anything different than every other country that has been shaped by westernized preferences. Even in Asia (including India) , the paler you skin the more appealing you are deemed. Even though the USA was represented by a black woman (which I think is great), she was fair skinned and had green eyes. Advertising is just what it is, "advertising".

Its true I noticed most TV presenters were a pasty white colour, the adverts in DR didn't even include a 'token' black guy. As an outsider its so noticeable that those on TV don't represent the true Dominican population. Why they hide it I don't know, its obvious even some Dominicans with the whitest skin have had a black guy in their mothers at some stage. Just look at the noses, profiles, lips. Be honest about it and stop being so racist.

Duane, our beauty queens come in all colours! What some people don't want to understand is that the DR is a diverse country, with different races, just like Brazil, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, USA etc. It is no exception in the Americas to have a multiracial population. Stop complaining so much and do your homework before trying to label a whole nation as racist. Look at Massiel Taveras, Ada Aimee de la Cruz, Claudia Cruz Rodriguez, Ruth Ocumares, Amell Sanatana, and Evelina Rodriguez, Yaris Cedaño, Joelissa Sosa, Ghaydi Marques. All these dominican models and beauty queens are true representatives of our mulatto mix.
But since we have all types of races we also have several caucasian (looking) women who represent the DR as well, like Renata Soñe, Amelia Vega, Marianne Cruz, Larimar Fiallo, Mia Taveras. Why is it a problem to you that our people come in different sizes and shapes and all colours of the rainbow? We are not like Senegal, Finland, China or India, which are count

Wake up dipsticks. I never said anything remotely along the lines that the DR was mono-racial or not multicultural. I said the opposite - read the post. I said that your advertising was not representative of your mix of people, watch a Presidente ad, the bimbos in it look as if they could come from bloody Sweden. Your women, mixed race, if not completely black are obsessed with having their afro hair straightened and wearing their make up lighter. It seemed those with wealth were mainly of European stock whilst those without were mixed or of African descent, no doubt there are exceptions, but not many.
If you say this isn't the case, you must walk around the Dominican Republic with your heads up your rear ends.
Buenoha - Having a huge list of Mulatto tarts 'representing' their country by standing around smiling doesn't display a mixed society, its just showing someone who happens to be mixed, in turn just showing you're only a nation of mulattos, which isn't true.

Also, it's a misconception of yours to believe that only europeans posess wealth on this country, I could mention a lot of mixed families whose fortunes have nothing to envy those of the "blanquitos" just to make a point. That misconception might have bee truth during the decades in which the DR's economy depended on the well being of the sugar industry, but that's no longer the reality any more.

Please. Should I state once more that if in fact we are guilty of potraying the more lighter skinned percentage of our population (which is not as small as some people like to say it is), then we aren't doing anything that any other country influenced by westernized preferences? Colombia is country of mostly mestizo population (supposedly 58 %) but the majority of their models don't look that way. A report on CNN stated a while back that the average American women is a size 14, but you know as well as I do that the models or women portrayed in magazines aren't overweight.
Does the average black woman have fair skin or green eyes as opposed to the majority of her counterparts? But guess what kind of girl Miss USA was decided to portray.

ONE of Hugo Chávez’s lesser-known feats since taking over as Venezuela’s leader in 1999 is to have presided over a tripling of the annual homicide rate—and that’s according to the official statistics. Last year more than 13,000 people were killed in a country of 27m, producing a murder rate of 48 per 100,000, the second highest in the world (after El Salvador). In neighbouring Colombia, a country plagued by guerrilla war and drug violence, the rate was 40 per 100,000.
