Paris.– US actor Danny Glover, who plans an epic next year on Haitian independence hero Toussaint-Louverture, said he slaved to raise funds for the movie because financiers complained there were no white heroes.

"Producers said 'It's a nice project, a great project... where are the white heroes?'" he told the press during a stay in Paris this month for a seminar on film.

"I couldn't get the money here, I couldn't get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn't believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to," he said.

D"The first question you get, is 'Is it a black film?' All of them agree, it's not going to do good in Europe, it's not going to do good in Japan.

"Somebody has to prove that to be a lie!", he said. "Maybe I'll have the chance to prove it."

"Toussaint," Glover's first project as film director, is about Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803), a former slave and one of the fathers of Haiti's independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic.

The uprising he led was bloodily put down in 1802 by 20,000 soldiers dispatched to the Caribbean by Napoleon Bonaparte, who then re-established slavery after its ban by the leaders of the French Revolution.

Due to be shot in Venezuela early next year, the film will star Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes and Angela Bassett.

Danny Glover is a multi-millionaire capitalist, as much as a $100 million net worth, some say.

But, contrary to bourgeois slime, he is strongly and everlastingly anti-imperialist in point of view.

If this Haitian project is a hit ( as were quite a few of his past projects), who knows what Danny will become?

It's amazing that slimy reactionaries, like GC and anthonyC ... the two Cs ..., without a nickel in their pockets, subsisting off of a monthly crazy check from the government, grovel like mange dogs before US imperialists.

But a bloated capitalist like Danny, bulging with money ... he's not the only one, don't forget Sean Penn, as another example, perhaps, you've heard of him ... possesses the morality and strength of character, notwithstanding their distasteful class and social position, to stand up and confront the infinite evil of US imperialism.

In our anti-capitalism zeal and zest, we must never fail to distinguish between capitalists, (the vast majority) who are totally rotten and capitalists who at least have some degree of morality.

"I couldn't get the money here, I couldn't get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn't believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to," the DT quotes Danny.

0000

So, where did Danny Glover get the money to make the picture without a virulent infestation of the inaptly-named "white heroes?"

He got $18,000,000 from the revolutionary workers of Venezuela.

"Danny, here's the money, now make us a good picture that exposes the degenerates who brainwash the US people from their headquarters in Hollywood," the class conscious workers of Venezuela said.

"White heroes" in reality are largely genocidal savages or "conquistadors."

Latin Americans and Caribbeans are mostly brainwashed by bourgeois regimes into believing that the very savages, the "white heroes," who slaughtered them are their "mother countries," their "discoverers," their "truest friends," and, above all, the "saviors of their souls."

oooo

The heroic Haitians and Dominicans [whatever their color], the later joint occupants of the island, were the first people [PERIOD] --black, white, yellow, brown, or red -- to throw off French imperial rule under Napoleon anywhere in the world, not just and deprecatingly " the first black [BLACK] nation to throw off imperial rule."

Russia and Waterloo were no big deals after Haiti.

At that time of the Haitian victory, the white nations were running, with disgusting cowardice, from Napoleon like church rats listening to the sound of a door open.

To ignorant dominicans that know propaganda history and hand fed think T. Louverture as a murder but he was the most courageous out of all and manipulated France and Spain by joining both sides that agreed to abolish slavery. He also wanted peace and common ground with france but Napoleon couldn't allow himself to be defeat by a negro and see him as equal which lead to his one way ticket to prison in France..Fort de Joux where he died but the seed of freedom by negros and mulattos was formed and the revolution continued...Louverture was the founder of Barahona just in case you didn't know. Unless u are the minority elite spaniard/elite that lost money and left the island Louverture should be your hero as well.. You know dam well dominicans that left poverty in DR to immigrate to the USA aren't part of that minority group who still run the DR...I think this movie didn't get support because it would dispell the myths of the haitian revolution and show the atrocities of the French.

At the box office, it's a struggle to get enough screens ... that is, screens outside of the art houses ... to show progressive films in a country, like the narrowminded USA, where a filthy reactionary and degenerate sector of the GOP electorate/constituency calls the shots.

Leftist activist, and virulent anti-American Danny Glover ""

Venezuelan filmmakers last year slammed the investment.

"It is Mr Glover who should be bringing dollars to Venezuela," the National Association of Film Makers and the Venezuelan Chamber of Film Producers said in an open letter.

Glover, a longtime activist, has supported Chavez's political revolution since he was first elected in 1998.

After making his debut with a bit role in 1979 movie starring Clint Eastwood, "Escape From Alcatraz", Glover played in films such as "Silverado" and "Witness" but grabbed wide attention after Steven Spielberg's 1985 movie "The Color Purple".

He is probably most widely known as "Lethal Weapon" co-star with Mel Gibson.

"He wasn't so Anti-American back then when he was rolling in the dough"

To all negative commentators, why make this into a political issue. Danny Glovers political ideas nor Chavez's have anything to do with this. They are just raising the awareness of one of the greatest moments in history in the americas. As mention b4 why isn't this movie supported mainstream & globally? This goes beyond the obvious where a group of people don't want anything positive to come out of Haiti. We can have sympathy for holocaust but none for the black holocaust. This has nothing to do with whining rather it's fact that Haiti rocked the boat of imperialism and gave the conquerors a taste of their own medicine. This movie should be the interest of all latin americans and others that have been oppressed. The midwest would be speaking french and part of Frances territory if Haiti didn't make Napoleon go broke trying to retain Saint Domingue. Dominicans should be interested too since this has to do (extension) with your history unless u think it started 1844.

Yep the systematic genocide of a nation by your hero is a high-point of history.

If that is your hero no wonder Haiti is such a mess.

Review of Burn Reviewed by Glenn Erickson

Gillo Pontecorvo's stature as a political filmmaker will forever rest on his achievement in Battle of Algiers. Burn! came out well into a Marxist mini-revolution in the Italian cinema. It reached America just before our own short-lived trifling with revolutionary themes, which in reality amounted to little more than a few longhair art pictures - big studios were turning out drek like Che! Burn! played because it was considered a commercial hopeful, even with Marlon Brando at a career low ... this was the kind of picture that made him an iffy prospect to star in The Godfather three years later. Even the new title reflects the Hollywood desire to co-opt revolution as a commercial genre: Burn! sounds like a bogus epic about Black Power.

AnthonyC, what the hell are you talking about. L'ouverture didn't commit genocide. Please read a book or have some one read it for you since you appear to lack comprehension. GC, I see what your talking about. It will not make bucks because this movie is hard to sell. Now my thing is why is that when we are supposedly in a society where we have come a long way. Doesn't mainstream have the same interest to find know of the struggles of the Haitian people fighting the Goliath of that time. I am more getting at getting this story out to the world so they can become aware of the atrocities commited. Che's movie is another hard to sell because he wasn't walking on egg shell and would have awaken the dormant in latin america to fight for justice. Movies like these aren't for popcorn and leisure but for those seeking the truth and have a thirst for knowledge. Unfortunately, these types are a minority. It's an american history untold or rarely mentioned.

I'm surprised by the fact that this story isn't mentioned at all on the African American parades of January in the US, considering that his struggle was even more relevant to the cause of African Americans than anything that MLK or Malcolm X could ever had done, not that I'm minimizing their struggle, mind you, but seeing the proportions of Toussaint's struggle in comparison to what they faced, his continuing omission on those remembrance ceremonies seems like an act of ingratittude to me.

Lautaro, unfortunately blacks in the USA dont know much about world events beyond there border. Well even white americans are not too knowledgeable about world events either. I think in due time alot of blacks in the USA are becoming aware of Toussaint L'ouverture and of latin america in general. That's why a movie about one of the great heros in Latin America should be told to those in N. America and Europe.

Haitian history goes beyond black history. Haiti was a refuge for all oppressed people and the original habitants of the island who were extinguish due to the savagery of the conquerors. Thus, Haiti is the original name given to Saint Domingue to attribute the indigenous that lost their lives. American education system lacks in so many department which doesn't exclude it's history department where they aren't taught about world history. How many americans can even find haiti/DR on a map? Not trying to dis-credit the americans here but geography isn't there strongest point. In due time americans especially blacks are broadening there horizon beyond US soil.

When you look at it closely, that flaw is an enormous one, considering that they (the US) are the world's sole superpower. The US mainstream loves drama, revolutions, uprising, and war. If this movie is accurate to the events that happened, I can't see a reason why it won't be successful in theaters. Look at movies like Hotel Rwanda, Amistad, Roots, and Blood Diamond, these are all movies that were successful within the US media. I don't comprehend why you guys don't think this movie wont do as good or better. Its either you all are tough cretics or maybe its the Haitian thing. I think thats its the latter.

The only way to prove it would be to search if the movie "Amistad" was sugarcoated on its depiction of the white establishment to suit hollywood interests, and if the producers refusal to back "Toussaint" have to do with the absolute impossibility of sugarcoating this movie, the matter of Chavez and Glover's ideology, or a combination of both.

Well, Goulet, is impossible to ignore that issue here, because of the fact that Saint Domingue's slave establishment was the most harsh on the New World, so much that, in the other colonies, when the slaves proved to be too rebellious to the master's inclinations, the threat of sending them to Saint Domingue was more than enough to buy their compliance with their lot, even with the hardiest of them. From my POV, the western world is not too anxious to get their biggest failure get a time on the big screen, specially one regarding its dearest sweethearts (the french).

Although, if you ask me, I'll have to say that those producers didn't even bother to make their homework on this story, which only shows the fact that they refused it beforehand, because there's a white "hero" among all of this: Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, the french commisioner who decreed the abolition of slavery on the island in october 1793 (although his reasons for doing so would be less than altruistic). He was so radical that he would make Belial look like a glorified Santa Claus in comparison. LOL

I have been in Haiti and have been to the Citadel and you know what, how long have they been independant, who messed up their system. The Red Army in Citi Soilel fights against what ever the current government wants-no matter who they are. Belial...let me educate you on the true history of Haiti....France was defeated because most of the army there was sick or dead. The French came back in force....the Haitians realized they could not defeat the fresh healthy troops that were sitting off the coast.
Napolean not wanting to commit his troops there made a deal with the Haitians that they would not re-invade for so many millions of dollars (francs).
The Haitians agreed and this huge debt to France is one of the reasons they have had so much trouble overcoming poverty.

anthonyC, I generally agree with you but not this time. If you realized that most of those people only eat 4-days per week and how skinny they are, maybe you would change your opinion, otherwise your incapable of compassion for others. Which by definition is psychotic.
They were first straddled with this huge debt to France than ruled by viciouse dictators, maybe thats why they haven't lived up to your expectations.
They just becam a democracy in the 1990's, takes time.

Sorry. Doesn't wash with me. haiti has been a nation long enough to have gotten their house in Order.
The Debt was their Fault.
The Dicators were their fault.

You say that they have been a democracy since 1990? So? So has the Eastern block and they seem to be doing well. Other countries strive to improve. Haiti Strives to be a charity case.

anthony...well there is some merit to what your saying, had they made better decisions in the past.... Another issue is the country is basicly a desert, hardley any trees. The poor cut them down so they could make charcoal and cook there food, no electricity for the poor or 805 of the country.
The rich land owners kept the people un-educated as well. School is not free like here so if it comes down to food for the family or school............
If you lived there for awhile and met the people, I still think you would ease up on them at least a little. Even with all that misery they are much nicer people than most Americans.

If in the house there was 1-piece of bread, they would give you half. Wouldnt happen here.
dont get me wrong I am not one of those self-loathing Americans that I cant stand. Living in the 3rd world has a way of making you very patriotic.

Perhaps you should rephrase that to read the poor HAITIANS cut them down.

I have spent time in Haiti myself. I have done business there. The ingrained corruption from the top to the bottum makes the DR look like the epitome of Business morality.

Where are the Haitian leaders who will finally say Enough is Enough?

Anthony...True, I also lived in the DR for more than 2-years. It's night and day between the 2-countries. I loved living in Santiago, hoping I get that recruiters phone call so I can go back.
I hope for there sake they do get some decent leaders, I was there during the Aristide affair, was cool when the marines came in. I actually was in the same room with him once, never like the man.

Me cago en Toussaint Boyer Soulouque y toda la basura que entro desde el oeste y que entran sin control en mi Patria malos politicos que los permiten entrar sabiendo que cada uno es un atraso para nuestro pais!!
