I'm surprised by the fact that this story isn't mentioned at all on the African American parades of January in the US, considering that his struggle was even more relevant to the cause of African Americans than anything that MLK or Malcolm X could ever had done, not that I'm minimizing their struggle, mind you, but seeing the proportions of Toussaint's struggle in comparison to what they faced, his continuing omission on those remembrance ceremonies seems like an act of ingratittude to me.

Haitian history goes beyond black history. Haiti was a refuge for all oppressed people and the original habitants of the island who were extinguish due to the savagery of the conquerors. Thus, Haiti is the original name given to Saint Domingue to attribute the indigenous that lost their lives. American education system lacks in so many department which doesn't exclude it's history department where they aren't taught about world history. How many americans can even find haiti/DR on a map? Not trying to dis-credit the americans here but geography isn't there strongest point. In due time americans especially blacks are broadening there horizon beyond US soil.

Look at movies like Hotel Rwanda, Amistad, Roots,and Blood Diamond, these are all movies that were successful within the US media. Well, Goulet, is impossible to ignore that issue here, because of the fact that Saint Domingue's slave establishment was the most harsh on the New World, so much that, in the other colonies, when the slaves proved to be too rebellious to the master's inclinations, the threat of sending them to Saint Domingue was more than enough to buy their compliance with their lot, even with the hardiest of them. Napolean not wanting to commit his troops there made a deal with the Haitians that they would not re-invade for so many millions of dollars (francs).
The Haitians agreed and this huge debt to France is one of the reasons they have had so much trouble overcoming poverty.
