As a democratic socialist who supports ethical capitalism and free trade I am happy about this project...now let's hope a lot of that wealth stay in DR.

the DR had better hurry to take advantage of every opportunity it can because soon Cuba will be a factor.....when private property is again legal in Cuba the speed at which that island will be developed will be blinding.....even belial will be selling time shares to make a buck

Cuba has me worried because of that. I just hope that by the time Cuba allows private property DR is way ahead. Nothing against Cuba...I want them to be free from a totalitarian regime, but it worries me that they might steal tourists from DR. Hopefully we have already created a loyal base that won't stop visiting DR no matter what happens!

the market is huge and it will take some time to build a quality network of hotels and golf courses etc ...the curiosity factor is also huge.....competition will just grow the market for the whole caribbean,....cruise ships will also take advantage of expanded itineraries and leisure yachting will now be able to transit this part of the caribbean as well

Edward, there is no such thing in the world as "way ahead". world conditions are not static. to say you hope the DR will be way ahead suggests that it will get to some finish line first, and cuba will remain second, or lesser, because we got there first. remember that after the korean war, we had a higher gdp per capita than korea did. you still think we are way ahead?

thanks for the article, Goulet. as an aside, did you note that there is reluctance in certain quarters to permit certain investments? i mentioned the Dubai ports world issue before. one of the reasons why these externals can survive in the cases they do, is that the usa has a functional workforce: we do not.

strategic purchases will not be allowed....that is logical
From: United States
i agree that strategic purchases are not acceptable. in the case of Dubai, it wasn't even a purchase; it was a management contract. but what do you consider STRATEGIC? when you have an asset which is your most important source of revenue, it is, de facto, strategic. that is why i call for a more discriminate formula for the control of tourist assets in the DR.

not sufficient expertise at this time....but rapidly improving as we move away from rubber chicken all inclusives....Bermuda is only island that can discriminate to any extent.....they have the last coca cola in the desert so to speak.....but ownership of hotels by government is a loser....and we have pretty good local ownership.....Ritz and Four Seasons would not come here if we could not pass smell test....that is why they waited so long
