The symphony orchestra swooned the tourists at Viva Wyndham Beach Club.
SANTO DOMINGO.- Luis Mustelier, who resides in Miami and traveled to Bavaro on the weekend to stay in a new five star hotel there, asked how was the Dominican capital and why the image sold in the international media goes from Punta Cana’s beaches to the poverty in the country’s 'misery townships.'
Interviewed by newspaper Diario Libre, he was told that, for example, the Alcazar is perhaps one of the oldest constructions in the New World, used by Christopher Columbus’ brother Bartolome and his son Diego; that here there is the Primal Cathedral of America, the first university, interesting museums and art galleries, caves and archaeological sites, a National Theater, three symphony orchestras, the recently staged international book fair and that Dominican Republic is already part of the circuit of markets for the grand stars of show business.
Mustelier couldn’t believe it. And then, why doesn’t anyone know about that? Why would one to be locked up in a hotel without really knowing the country?
Good questions.
All tourists want to know the country they visit. Most of the shows staged in Bavaro’s hotels suffers a capital sin: the lack of live music, which would otherwise be giving musicians opportunities of work, and to pay copyrights.
A few agencies suggest more festivals and the attraction of congresses. Quepe Tours and some others which operate in the country’s east suggest this type of tourism.
The staging of the Merengue Sound tour in the next two weeks is an example, as well as the already-established Latin Music tour in August and other projects.
“The organization of musical or cultural festivals are noble projects which motorize cultural tourism, which in the case of Quepe Tours, shares with Acroarte (show business journalists) leaves only profits,” newspaper Diario Libre says.

Well, they made a mistake Mr. Luis Mustelier when they told you that Christopher Columbus lived in the Alcazar because he never did. It was just his son and wife....slaves

If the DR wants to branch out into cultural tourism, perhaps it may want to consider an annual Latin jazz festival.
There is no established Latin jazz festival today, only gallant efforts to put one together.
I'm not talking about a jazz festival, Cuba and Caribbean got that sewed up.
But Latin jazz.
Not Latin folk or pop or dance (buttocks shaking) music, that stuff is boringly ubiquitous.
But Latin jazz., artists who can swing and jam, not just holler and shake their behinds.
The key is artist selection; so, it is essential to keep philistines out of the selection process.
So, somebody who knows the music and the business, like Michel Camilo, should supervise selections. Naturally, a token number of straight-ahead jazz musicians should be recognized, but the dignity of a Latin Jazz Festival depends on the total exclusion of filthy rappers, stinking hip hoppers, vermin-infested rockers, and reactionary Cuban-American trash out of Miami of any musical genre.

Tsk Tsk Splat excluding Cuban exiles would put a pretty big hole in the possible musicians who could perform .....besides what self respecting musician would go along with that brain dead idea....you almost were normal until that last part ...Chill and Risable would not like the part about filthy rappers and stinking hip hop either....besides the first time the musicians from cuba had a chance they would defect no doubt they always do ie cuban circus performers in Mexico a couple of weeks ago and practically the whole cuban soccer team last month....not even the promise of rice cookers could persuade them to return

The DR should embrace its culture and sell it more prominently to its visitors. Security needs to be improved, as well as public transport. That way, tourists will be able to cruise around the cities with ease, guided by maps. We need intercity trains that go from Punta Cana, La Romana, Samana and the northern tourist cities into La Capital and Santiago. People like to move around freely, book a night in theater, the opera, or go to a nightclub area without feering criminals, and without having to need a guide or to rent a car. San Pedro de Macorix 's city downtown should be restored. It is the most beautiful colonial zone on the whole island and should be used more in the tourism offer.

MrDom, read carefully, the author said the Alcazar was USED by Columbus...he never said he lived there.

El-Mayimbe, Colon died on 1506 in Spain and the construction of the Alcazar started by 1510, so he never saw that building.

They also need to create a public transportation bus system that can run from santo domingo to Las America Airport like every other major city has it. So local and foreigners don't get sucked up with the taxis drivers high rates. And it will also help the airport workers that has to pay for a bus ride from the city to the high way near the airport and 40 pesos for a ride on a risky motorconcho (motor bike) to the airport and back.

I don't have a hang up on any Latin butt-shaking music. Good butt-shaking often isn't jazz, whether "Latin," Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, or Caribbean.
It 's nice pop, folk, & dance music with a Latin essence, but it's not jazz. Jazz audiences are so perceptive that you can't fool them with butt-shaking, no matter how wild the behind moves.
Latin jazz includes Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean & "Latin" matter configured in a jazz form.
"Latin," here, is a catch-all residue.
The Caribbean (e.g.,Sonny Rollins), like Cuba (e.g., Chano Puzo, Chucho Valdes, etc.) and PR (e.g., Ray Barreto) have made huge contibutions to jazz and Latin jazz.
Cuba leads the genre, followed by Puerto Rico, both with musical geniuses. The Dominican Republic has a good number extraordinary musicians in the genre. The same is true of Haiti, Panama, and Argentina. Brazil has its own thing in the genre.
The philistines mess up everything trying palm-off or sneak in butt-shaking music for Latin jazz.

Well NY4life this question has been asked from many people on earth, and nobody has gotten a clear answer from it... cuz Spaniards say that he is in Spain ( Seville's cathedral) but we Dominicans say that his rest is here is Santo Domingo (faro a Colon)... His rest was moved back and forth form Spain to Santo Domingo and vice versa that people loose track of him.
Well some years ago a study of DNA was going to be done to both rests but don't know what happened,, nobody knows the results of it.
To me his rest is here in Santo Domingo cuz I have heard that the rest in Spain belonged to a young man. despite our rest appears to belong to a man of 50 or older ,close to the age of Christopher Columbus when he died.
Christopher Columbus LAST WISH (to be burry in Santo Domingo)...

Thanks Mr.Dom. It's very interesting how the Faro Colon is only opened on the main floor and the rest of the floors above are closed to the public.

Dont forget resident communist stooge and his idea for a festival however, and I concur whole heartedly......" the dignity of a Latin Jazz Festival depends on the total exclusion of filthy rappers, stinking hip hoppers, vermin-infested rockers, " ............ I personally would not be so hard on these other genres so as not to offend people like Chill and Risable but the event should retain a certain integrity

Whe will the yacht marina in Samana be completed. As a yacht delivery captain who frequently transits thru the DR enroute to/from the Caribbean, I am sick and tired of being held hostage every time I stop in Samana for fuel. Ocean World/Cap Cana really have their act together, but the port at Samana is a wicked, wicked place.
