Havana.– The Russian website Travels granted the 2007 Star Award to the Cuban resort of Varadero as the best beach destination in the Caribbean region.
The annual award is the result of an Internet survey to assess Russian travelers' preferences.
Varadero topped the list of beach resorts, and competed with destinations in Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and other Caribbean islands.
The Cuban destination also won the 2004 and 2005 Star Awards, which is granted by airlines and tour operators.
Cuba was also chosen as the world's second cleanest island, only preceded by the Maldives.
Nearly 30,000 Russian tourists visited Cuba last year. Tourist arrivals from that country have continued to increase during the first semester of 2008.

I know, it sounds discriminatory, but when you come to think of why the other Europeans don´t like Russian tourists, it becomes clear racism has nothing to do with it. Apparently Russians when they go on holiday are loud, rude, drunk, perhaps aggressive, in big groups, etc etc. Some Spanish hotels in the Costa Blanca (Spain) and hotels in Turkey and Belgium don´t accept them anymore after disastrous experiences in the past.
A Cuban joke, during Castro's last years as head of state:
Castro is visiting the Galapagos islands. He is shown a very large turtle, which he holds up and examines.
"How long does this turtle live?" he asks. The tourist guide tells him four hundred years.
Castro says, "See Comrades. This is the trouble with pets. You love them and feed them and they end up dying on you."
