Havana.– The Russian website Travels granted the 2007 Star Award to the Cuban resort of
Varadero as the best beach destination in the Caribbean region.
The
annual award is the result of an Internet survey to assess Russian travelers'
preferences.
Varadero topped the list of beach resorts, and competed with
destinations in Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and other
Caribbean islands.
The Cuban destination also won the 2004 and 2005 Star
Awards, which is granted by airlines and tour operators.
Cuba was also
chosen as the world's second cleanest island, only preceded by the
Maldives.
Nearly 30,000 Russian tourists visited Cuba last year. Tourist
arrivals from that country have continued to increase during the first semester
of 2008.

Varadero is a beautiful beach. I hope all the Russians go there. Russian tourists are not appreciated by other European tourists. There are even Russian-tourists-free touringcompanies that use that in their marketing strategy, and promote the fact they place you in a hotel without Russians.
I know, it sounds discriminatory, but when you come to think of why the other Europeans don´t like Russian tourists, it becomes clear racism has nothing to do with it. Apparently Russians when they go on holiday are loud, rude, drunk, perhaps aggressive, in big groups, etc etc. Some Spanish hotels in the Costa Blanca (Spain) and hotels in Turkey and Belgium don´t accept them anymore after disastrous experiences in the past.

Buenoha.Thank you for putting this practically useless award in perspective..the number of cubans who speak Russian left over from the occupation stilts this who cares statistic so what a few cuban hookers speak russian.Cuba the lowest of the lowball all inclusives can have them.. they can get drunk and puke with the Canadians on bad rum and beer...If anyone reads the above article and feels threatened .Dont worry ,Veradero is a beautiful beach but the CHEESEBALL hotels etc they have built their will not stand up to competition in an open market ....One need only read DT s article on Punta Cana /Cap Cana to realize that if cuba started tomorrow they would still need 10 years to be in the ball park with those projects..and that it would take a lot of Cuban Ex Pat money to do it...Read this Raul and eat your heart ou.

A Cuban joke, during Castro's last years as head of state:
Castro is visiting the Galapagos islands. He is shown a very large turtle, which he holds up and examines.
"How long does this turtle live?" he asks. The tourist guide tells him four hundred years.
Castro says, "See Comrades. This is the trouble with pets. You love them and feed them and they end up dying on you."

Varadero is a beautiful beach but most of Cuba's coastline is not "beachy"; it is mostly rocky. The DR has miles of white sand beaches all about the island and Punta Cana, for example, is the largest stretch of beach in the whole Caribbean. The DR has more beaches than any other island in the Caribbean. Not bad for the 2nd largest island in the Caribbean.

In Cuba, 34 Cubans were arrested for trying to leave the country on-board a yacht. Of course, in Cuba, a yacht is five inner tubes tied to a king-size mattress.
