SANTO DOMINGO.– The executive vice president of the National Hotels and Restaurants Association (ASONAHORES) affirmed Friday that the topic of Dominican Republic’s “has been satanized."

"The only thing that has done has been to constitutionalize it, that is to say that it was not in the Constitution and was taken there, there’s no variation," said Arturo Villanueva

Interviewed in the program Diario Libre A.M, the hotelier said the new Constitution establishes the inalienable right all citizens have to use the beaches, respecting the right of private property, also established in the old Constitution. “What was done by placing that article in this Constitution was to conciliate the rights of citizens but also the territorial order in reference to the economic aspect."

Yeah, right!

You guys sold out to the hoteliers. You trampled over our inalinable rights and patrimony.

You lie, cheat, steal and commit other crimes overtly and with impunity and call yourselves honorable and expect us to trust you. Well, we don't!

Remember Bastille!

Dan,

I've been privileged to have traveled most of the western world, and I will tell you that this indeed is one of the most beautiful regions anywhere.

We got lakes galore, a heavy concentration of vineyards, mountains, valleys and rivers; great universities and hospitals; etc.

Yes we have winters, but you soon get use to them, especially if you ski or snowshoe or ice fish.

Yes, the Finger Lakes racetrack is still open and it's only about five miles from my house. It now has a state-run casino, which is very nice; in fact, I am going there tomorrow night to listen to a band. It is also a nice place in which to spend and afternoon in the summer, betting on horse races.

Anyway, I still feel this is a nice piece of paradise. Hope you'll come and visit our region.

Glomar,

I have been at the track and even in summer nights is feels cooler than NYC up there. I am sure that guys are going to get the first snow by next week.

As far as the beaches and locals visiting, this goes both ways and tell you a funny story about my vacation to DR this past summer. My wife and daughter travelled to DR for a 20 days vacation at two different resorts, we also stayed with families 5 other days to say hello.

First 10 days were at the Holliday Village Golden in playa dorada, this resort is for families with kids (torture, since everything is directed to the children) Ahi estaba este pajero queriedome vender un coco por $50U.S. como si fuero ingles o gringo, cuando yo le conteste, to esta loco o te hiede el caco, el tipo brinco para hatra y me dice, cono pero si eres de lo mio, dame $20 entonce. I almost run after him and punch in the face. They are not only pestering your tranquility, but try to sell you everything under the sun. However, it was very

refreshing and funny to see many of them bathing and trying to be adventurous by getting into the resort only to be turned back by the guards.

The second ten days we spent those at the Paradisus in punta cana, with the child care option for the baby. This place is really blocked off to even nationals with enough cash to visit. I questioned one of the workers as to why there were no dominicans in there and he responded, "because every time they come, they get drink and start fighting", LOL

So now you see why these companies want to create private beaches that re only limited to foreigners. I am very happy that the people when up in arms, since their ancestors pay for those beaches with their blood. Que se vajan pal carajo estos negociantes. Even though, I have no issue since I come from the U.S., but I still have plenty of family over there who would like to enjoy their beaches without limitations.

Dag,

We already had some snow here about ten days ago, it didn't stick-but snow, nevertheless.

As for vacationing in DR, I stayed in Playa Dorada in 1981 at Jack Tar Village and had similar experience.

Present situation in DR disgusts me and I doubt I'll be visiting anytime soon. It is not the same paradise I left in the 60's as a child, and crime and drugs seem rampant. In addition to my quarterly business trips to Europe, my plans are to vacation there for the next ten years. Next year, we are doing Spain and Portugal, then a 10-day cruise from Barcelona to the Adriatic, via the Mediterranean. This past year we did a two-week cruise from Rome to Istanbul and all points in between. It was fabulous and highly civilized; we also did five days in Rome. We generally cruise on Celebrity and really enjoy it.

glomar, no offense, but my friend you have been around for a while. Let me tell you, my mom was a child in the 1960's LOL.

On the other hand can you PM me about Istanbul, since we have already booked a 15 days stay for July, 2010. Can you give me some inside information and places to visit.

They told me that the city is under some construction, but that it should be almost completed by them.

Dag,

You are right, I am in my early 50's, and that's old-no matter how you might spin it!

You young guys are unfortunate that all you've experienced is a rapid, downward spiraling decay in morals, gov. and everything essential to a functioning society.

Yes, Dominicans measure progress in terms of beautiful buildings and avenues and hotels. Latter one is a disgrace, because we effectively sold our beaches and enjoyment to the Spanish conquerors and other Europeans.

As a child, I enjoyed a family-owned pristine private beach, a nice colonial home in town and an expansive farm in the country side. There were great family friends, many honorable people whose greatest asset was integrity, although they represented the upper crust.

No serious crimes to speak of, no tolerance for drugs, and the military and the judicial authorities were more trust worthy.

All in all, a much better time period. Your mother was lucky to experience it.

Thanks, glomar, yeah she talks a lot about those times. She is actually living there now and comes over for the spring and summer to be with the family. We are from a poor barrio in Santiago, but thanks for migration and great opportunities that me and my siblings found here in the U.S. we have really realized the American dream, here and there consequently.

I love to travel and meet new people and learn about their culture and behaviors. I refrain from traveling exclusively to the DR since it does not allow you to broaden your understanding of how different human beings are, this can only be attained via coming in contact with all the diversity that is out there. Even here in the U.S. when a northerner like me travels south of the mason-dixon is like we are in a different world.

Dag,

All true, very true.

More Dominicans should stop being so insular and broaden their horizons as well.
