Kingston.– Jamaica´s Sandals Resorts International was again voted the best Caribbean vacation destination, for the 10th consecutive
year, by
Canadian travel agents in the Baxter Travel Media Agents Choice Awards
for 2009.
The resort chain topped several of its local and
international competitors to take the prestigious title for the 10th
year as the Favourite All-Inclusive Resort, Favourite Hotel Chain for
the third consecutive year, and Favourite Environmentally Friendly
Company for the second year in a row.
Jamaica, meanwhile, beat several other countries,
including Mexico, Hawaii, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Canada to
take leading honeymoon destination title, while the Jamaica Tourist
Board (JTB) topped 50 other tourist boards in the 'Best Tourist Board'
category.
The awards were presented last Saturday at Sandals Grande
Ocho Rios during a gala dinner which was attended by close to 100
Canadian travel agents as well as representatives from the JTB.
Jamaican Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, in delivering the
keynote address, said Canada continues to be one of the leading markets
for the island with growth of approximately 30 per cent at the end of
August.
"The Canadian trade partners and destination Jamaica is a
great thing and we are going to continue to nurture and nourish that
because we have some objectives, and our main objective is to become
the number one destination for the Canadian market," Bartlett said,
adding that Jamaica is currently ranked third behind Cuba and Dominica
Republic.

When I go to all-inclusive and interact with the worker they tell me the same thing that they prefer American. The thing is that the American prefer Bahamas, Aruba, ect But with thi economy more American coming over to DR more than ever and watching that they were getting rip off in those very expensive island when they get the same thing in DR and better beach.

The primary reasons why North American tourists visit the Caribbean are:
1) Beaches
2) Rum & music
3) Food
Culturally, they consider us inferior and don't really bother to explore that aspect much. Jamaica and Bermuda, being part of the British Commonwealth, enjoy much greater respect and have more in common with English-speaking countries, and maybe an unfair advantage. These results don't surprise me at all.
BTW, I am not so sure that Jamaica and Bermuda have electricity shortages, motoconchos, ubiquitous armed police, roads chock full of potholes, general lawlessness and rampant corruption. They also enjoy better education. Perhaps that's why they enjoy greater success. How can they do it??????

Jamaica is my second Home ,but I love DR, the problem is when Im in DR,specially Santo Domingo I feel like Im in Miami. Most tourist do not want what their are trying to escape from while in Vacation. Romance is not what come to mind when people think of DR. On the int'l scene your reputation is for partying. Beside you guys are the Johnny come lately to this tourism thing. Jamaica reputation for being a romantic destination was set sense the late 60's. mikey they have a purpose and a time frame ....if they leave the resort they will overpay some cabby to take them to the best restaurant in the area ....they will not be going to the local colmado to drink Grandes with the locals to save a few pesos ....they will pay top price for hopefully good food and if they are American will probably tip well ...the next day they will employ someone to caddy for them and probably tip them well ....they may rent a boat and go fishing or they may go scuba diving ....They will not be waiting for them to ring the bell at the piggy trough buffets at the all inclusive oinker resorts although some will stay at all inclusive hotels A la Carte is always preferred to the Soui Soui Pig Pig buffets

Plus I live in a up and coming neighborhood in Brooklyn, what ever that means, actually it means that white people are moving in. All they do is raise rent/property tax/ prices. I prefer my Bravo, C-towns, bodegas, Associated, Compare. At least they carry the food that the majority demographic likes.
Also in NYC supermarkets aren't the cash cows that they are in the suburbs, bodega make a nice profit in the city.

Also dominicans own many businesses outside of Manhattan such as Corona, Ridgewood, Sunset Park, Bushwick, and Jackson Heights. Also in these neighborhoods we are not the majority, yet we own the majority of bodegas, barber shops, car dealers, MoneyGrams, Bakery, etc etc. Also our cabby presence is strong in all 5 boroughs. Yeah we work hard. We also have two US mayors, 1 NY supreme court justice, dean of the school of engineering at columbia, the best baseball players (with and without steroids), 4 NYC mayoral candidates (although minor), etc etc.
The diaspora is doing its job, punto y final.
Now we gotta go back. I can't wait, I got 30-40 years till I retire back to DR. And i am telling as many young dominican professionals that I know to do the same.

Dominican Republic too is progressing although we need to do a better job of prioritizing.

This is very interesting since I just got the latest TRAVELER MAGAZINE in the mail with the best ranked hotels and resorts and the DR tied the Egyptian northen red sea as #41 on the WORST RATED side. This is the reasons they state caused them to vote DR so low:

I have to agree with the comments, when I go to DR and was there this past summer at a family resort in POP, I really hate those high walls, these place look like freaking citadels. Not only that, but you must go through a few check points in order to reach you destination. If this bothers me and I am Dominican, imagine what impression it will leave to those who are foreigners.
As far as the educational piece. Glomar, we are being over invested at least 3x per pupil by Cuba, a country that is under intense pressure form the EMBARGO. As i said before, in the Caribbean, we only spend more money than Haiti when it come to education. This is clearly shown when you have migrant school age kids coming from the caribbean islands, Dominicans often fare much worse due to their low academic preparation. There are some communities, that even Haitians are out doing Dominican kids. This is clear among the catholic schools serving minorities communities.

The haitian problem is not one of color it is one of money/necessity/survival. The DR is third world country!!!! As such there is much disparity. I find it funny when Dominicans call the racism card....i guess they would know since they love to practice in reference to the Haitians, and any other blacks even their own: Not being able to gain access to clubs, being followed around stores like a thief, being told you have bad hair when you go to the salon. Then we can talk about the not having electricity, or water, getting sick from the horrible buffets in the resorts, can't say i've ever had to worry about getting amoeba's and parasites in Ja, and the non existent customer service and it's no wonder Jamaica does do better as a honeymoon destination.

I can talk about this on a personal note, since my older brother had to rush back to the NYC last year after contracting a parasite in one of POP resorts. He was under treatment for six months here in NYC, the doctor told him that it was one of the worst kinds a human can get. I visited DR this past summer and stayed with my family at the holiday village in POP and it was horrible. They got me with their pools and games for children and my daughter simply fell in love with kiddy pools she saw online, so on we went.
As far as the race issue, we have been struggling with this issue since the haitians were kicked out of the eastern territories. There is a huge fear in the DR when it comes to talk about our African influences and Taino to a limit.
As for Cuba, all I can say is, that if I am to take a vacation and Cuba is open for travel, i will not hesitate to take that trip. Everyone wants to see it.

The primary reasons why North American tourists visit the Caribbean are:
1) Beaches
2) Rum & music
3) Food
Culturally, they consider us inferior and don't really bother to explore that aspect much. Jamaica and Bermuda, being part of the British Commonwealth, enjoy much greater respect and have more in common with English-speaking countries, and maybe an unfair advantage. These results don't surprise me at all.
BTW, I am not so sure that Jamaica and Bermuda have electricity shortages, motoconchos, ubiquitous armed police, roads chock full of potholes, general lawlessness and rampant corruption. They also enjoy better education. Perhaps that's why they enjoy greater success. How can they do it??????

Jamaica is my second Home ,but I love DR, the problem is when Im in DR,specially Santo Domingo I feel like Im in Miami. Most tourist do not want what their are trying to escape from while in Vacation. Romance is not what come to mind when people think of DR. On the int'l scene your reputation is for partying. Beside you guys are the Johnny come lately to this tourism thing. Jamaica reputation for being a romantic destination was set sense the late 60's. Plus I live in a up and coming neighborhood in Brooklyn, what ever that means, actually it means that white people are moving in. All they do is raise rent/property tax/ prices. I prefer my Bravo, C-towns, bodegas, Associated, Compare. At least they carry the food that the majority demographic likes.
Also in NYC supermarkets aren't the cash cows that they are in the suburbs, bodega make a nice profit in the city.

This is very interesting since I just got the latest TRAVELER MAGAZINE in the mail with the best ranked hotels and resorts and the DR tied the Egyptian northen red sea as #41 on the WORST RATED side. This is the reasons they state caused them to vote DR so low:

I have to agree with the comments, when I go to DR and was there this past summer at a family resort in POP, I really hate those high walls, these place look like freaking citadels. Not only that, but you must go through a few check points in order to reach you destination. If this bothers me and I am Dominican, imagine what impression it will leave to those who are foreigners.
As far as the educational piece. Glomar, we are being over invested at least 3x per pupil by Cuba, a country that is under intense pressure form the EMBARGO. As i said before, in the Caribbean, we only spend more money than Haiti when it come to education. This is clearly shown when you have migrant school age kids coming from the caribbean islands, Dominicans often fare much worse due to their low academic preparation. There are some communities, that even Haitians are out doing Dominican kids. This is clear among the catholic schools serving minorities communities.
