SANTO DOMINGO.- Walking down the beaches of Cabarete and Punta Cana, the sands are empty with the exception of an occasional vendor walking down the shore with a box of jewelry.
Although it is the low season, things seem to be lower than normal. “This time of year is always slow, but this is the slowest it’s been in over ten years,” states an anonymous restaurant owner in Cabarete. “If this continues much longer, I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
The global recession has taken its toll on large and small tourist based businesses all over the country. The height of the Dominican Republic’s tourist season is December-March, but even in February the industry was beginning to feel strained, with a 20-30% drop in bookings as reported by the Caribbean Development Bank.
Many resorts were forced to lay off employees and pause construction in order to keep afloat. Even big named companies such as Cap Cana with developers such as Deutsche Bank, the Trump Organization and the Ritz Carlton Hotel had to delay development on their new four-resort complex in Punta Cana.
However, the finished areas are open for visitors while the complex, like many others in the country, waits for a better economic situation to continue the planned growth.
Although many businesses are having a difficult time with the global recession, many of the larger named resorts are still booming with business, even reaching capacity during this slow time.

the high cost for a plane ticket to DR due to the already high taxes is what is keeping the people away. You have to pay high ticket prices to travel to DR,pay $10 each time you enter the contry, and pay crazy amounts for anything you import? How will DR compete with others? Lower the taxes! Before Mexico had all of their problems, they dominated by offering dirt cheap packages

It's better to have lower profits than no profits in difficult times. Resorts must be flexible and quick to adjust to the weaker economy. The country needs to keep the work force employeed as best it can also. Massive unemployment is dangerous for everyone.

I am from the U.S with legal residency in Santiago. I have a membership with Wyndham resorts. In past years I would always go to Playa Dorado in Puerto Plata. I went on the internet and tried to make a 2 night 3 day reservation in the middle of the week. They would not accept it. They would accept a 3 night 4 day. My Dominican friend here, who speaks Spanish called them up was able to book for 3 days 2 night. At a cheaper rate. He didn't even have a rewards and a by request number. How can these resorts do well when the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing? We decided to go to another resort. I don't believe I will ever return to a Wyndham again. Apparently my membership doesn't mean a thing.

High air fares and high taxes are prohibiting tourists from travel to the Dominican Republic. Air fares from NY to Punta Cana are as high as $700.00!
Perhaps if Air Dominicana offers lower fares when they begin flights in August this will change.
It used to be that one could fly from NY on USA 3000 for about $300 round trip.
They no longer fly out of NY and American, Continental and Delta's fares are outrageous! How is it that Jet Blue offer low fares from NY to Santo Domingo, but the other 3 can't offer acceptable fares from NY to Punta Cana?

CCgirl, I believe the fares are set by competition and in that case Air Dominicana (as it exist today) serves as no competition to others flyers. They unfortunately cannot do much with a single plane or even a tiny fleet. With the advent of Fuel prices increasing, I doubt any service with be ultra-low cost outside of Spirit & Jet Blue. There are still good fare offered with Spirit to SDQ & STI whenever they offer sales (your travel plans must be flexible). I have bought tickets (FLL-SDQ) as low as $125-130 all taxs includes in the past. I know this is not PJU. Dont hold out for much from Air Dominicana. I hope I am wrong and wish them well.

Fellow islanders,
You still don't get it, do you? There is, actually something called a global recession which is slowly turning into a world wide depression. People are not buying, they're not travelling and they don't give to charity anymore. It's not only in the Dominican Republic, even here in Canada, you can feel the pinch from the economy.
That is the reason why I said lately, if the two governments that are sharing this islang were smart, they would have used the border for what it is : a cash cow. They just have to regulate it the same way the United states and Canada have regulate their border.
The american/canadian border is one of the longest in the world and it is bringing every day hundreds of millions of dollars to their economy.
Are we going to sit in our butt and let that golden eggs chicken die? I think that would be the most nono thing I would have ever witnessed in my doggone life. What do you think?
From: United States
the insults seem to bore only you. i could resist replying to you on occasion, if only you were not such a reprobate. when a person who is the guest of a country seeks to issue derogatory, generalistic remarks about the character, or lack thereof, of his hosts, then it is time for all good men to rebuke that lizard, and assure him that it is unbecoming to display such a lack of upbringing and pedigree. when you feel that it is appropriate to assert that dominican women are, by nature and deed, a collection of prostitutes, then i suggest that you do it from a far distance away. decent people, when invited to partake of the hospitality of a homeowner, usually do not exercise their reciprocity of duty by urinating on the furniture. then again, it is no surprise to me that you find inappropriate behavior acceptable, because, as i said before, you are the detritus of society.

Regarding the subject matter....The DR is no different then other Latin Country's. I believe the DR Gov. should invest more in the Capital after all Santo Domingo is the first City of the Americas. When talking about the DR in the States I first talk about the Historic significance of the DR then cap off with the Natural Beauty, plus prices compared to Hawaii. Problem is Many who have vacationed in the DR before always talk about crime, Filth and the armed security who seem to be everywhere [many don't feel safe]. Not to mention the Hookers, the high noise and Pesky Street Vendors.
I say gauge the DR economy after the Hurricane season.

cabaratewilliam,
I agree with you that the two ways exchange between Canada and the United States has been significantly slowed down. However, there are several parameters you must take into account in order to pinpoint where the situation is bugged. Do not forget that after the September 11 event and with the paranoia fever that is burning the political body in Washington today, the border crossings have been screened with a fine sifter. What that does, is to considerably slow down the amount of trucks and passengers that cross the border every day.
Furthermore, with this severe economic recession, people do not spend their money as lavishly as they used to do before, and with that idiotic "buy american" pucblicly stated policy, there is now a non declared and invisible trade war between the two neighbours. You compile these parameters and you'll end up with the reason why the Canadian/American borderline does not generate that much income anymore for both states.

And that's what I wouldn't want to happen with the two countries sharing the island. Borderlines are always cash cows for their contiguous countries. If we Haitians and Dominicans do not get together and make ours becoming a milking cow for us, how are we going to cope when the world economy will collapse, because things are so bad that some major economies won't survive this recession.
We might not like each other, but common sense and logic dictate that we must put our resources together in order to survive. It's like finding yourself on a raft with your enemy in the middle of the ocean, one must row and the other must steer. The Dominicans have the money so far and we have the manpower, I don't even have to explain what that means, for you are intelligent enough to guess it right. However, in order to achieve that, some of you must get their brain rid of those fascist and delusionnal types of thoughts some malevolent minds are stuffing inside theirs.

If only Governments would just do the same after all we do all share the same Planet and ALL have our own personal wants and needs for survival. Years back I had the pleasure of meeting one of the Astronauts who was a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle flight and was invited by one of our retired Air-Force Col. Science Teachers at Highland High School in Palmdale, Calif. I'll never forget what he told the class, He said something that rocked my perception and beliefs forever, He made such a profound statement, He said.... "One has to only look a Planet Earth from space to fully get the understanding of how we Earthlings share only one Planet in the vastness and darkness of Space, one People, one Planet".

You understand perfectly what being civilized is. As a matter of fact, last week my pals and I, who incidentally, gather once in a while for a meeting of the mind either in a restaurant or some downtown bar, are always debating about the same subject you're referring to. And this is why, sometimes I find myself, not only at odd with some of my Dominicans little cousins, but also involve in shouting match with them.
However, as my dad always said :" Better turn your enemy into your friend than to let him stay your foe for ever, for both of you will help one another survive the wrath of this hostile world." It took me more than ten years before I finally understood what he really meant.
As a matter of fact, we human beings, have no claws, no fangs and no fur covered body to protect us against the elements of nature, and that is the reason why we're living inside large organized bands whose goal is to defend and protect each other.

Unfortunately, many among us are still fitted with that animalistic instinct. Being civilized for them means to impose the supremacy of their own group instead of helping other fellow human beings to reach the same level of well being know how they have themselves managed to accomplish. I don't know about you, but I am a flight and space simulator nut, and I remember, the first time I was coming from a trip to the center of our galaxy, how mellow I felt when I saw that blue orb of my Home World alone and isolated in the tremendous void of space. It was like if I was hearing an inner voice telling me : "Welcome back home brother". Frankly, it was like if I have left for years and that I was about to find my Great mankind family back. How many of us these days have the same feeling in their heart? As far as I am concerned, I still feel that I do, I don't know about some folks here on this site and around the world.

well Lover, the main reason they probably dislike him is based on the principle of "monkey see, monkey do". everybody they come into with contact dislikes him , so they do not want to feel left out, or have people question their sense of balance.

So I go back to my orignal post...the source for this article is an unnamed bar owner.
Then we get this article
http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....Dominican-Republics-tourism-slide which states that Jan to April numbers were down 4.8%......
I would not deem that as the end of the world or the economy of the resorts and local bars. If a 4.8% decline puts you out of business...thern chances are, you should not have been in business in the first place.
Cheers
They should raise the Airport Taxes more !!!!!!!!!
the high cost for a plane ticket to DR due to the already high taxes is what is keeping the people away. You have to pay high ticket prices to travel to DR,pay $10 each time you enter the contry, and pay crazy amounts for anything you import? How will DR compete with others? Lower the taxes! Before Mexico had all of their problems, they dominated by offering dirt cheap packages
like the CEO's that are flying expensive planes say... its for the saftey of the company for the CEO to fly private planes. This is for the safety of Dominicana. lol
Great input, as I stated in my last posting I always agree to disagree. I may disagree with only part of your posting but I still respect your opinion.
NOT TO STIR THE POT but the last time I was in the DR on vacation about 3/4 of the Hookers were young to mid age Haitian Woman.
You, if you take out the childish insults and lies, your numerous posts would shrivel up and disappear as you really have nothing of value to say :)
I have to disagree. The recent tightening of the USA - CAnada border has PROVEN to cost the economy hundreds of millions. Ask any truck driver of export/import company. It also cost both in terms of tourist dollars.

Just Looked at the Hotel, It;s a whole in the wall. garbage and overpriced!!!!!! i have seen better deals online and better Hotels... that Place looks like a motel .. and a cheap one at that.
I rather stay at my aunts house and pay her.. Her house looks better and cleaner!!!
NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL COMMUNICATION the exchange of information minus the personal attacks......."AGREE TO DISAGREE" and respect for one another and their opinions.
Thanks ALL.
It's called connecting, It's the most simplest form of Human communication. I have many times in the past PUT MY FOOT IN MY MOUTH by saying things threw anger, frustration, ignorance and disagreement , only to be corrected in public. Which serves as a lesson to be open minded and become sensitive to others wants and needs. To error IS TO BE HUMAN, to admit it is proof of ones HUMANITY towards Man.
THANK YOU
If a tourist is not able of paying expenses of aréoport, He definitely it is not a tourist.
It is not $500 which goes cancellé my vacation.
If you are trying to book a vacation for a family of 4 or 5 @ 700-800 USD per ticket... Why choose Dominican? I love Dominican and always pay what ever price but the average family might still choose Mexico even with all of the problems they have. I have paid close to $1,000 USD for a plane ticket in December but I dont care. The Dominican gov knows that the women keep the men coming back for more so they set what ever price they want
Lou's is one of the best in the world. But the best Chicago style pizza is Gino's East in Chicago, they can also deliver anywhere in USA. But its better if you go to any of the ones in Chicago. Try the deep dish pizza... like homer Simpson says mmmmmmm pizza

Who am I to Judge, as I stated in the past let the readers be the Judge. Most who post truly believe in what they write, right or wrong. What I try to do is let them question their own beliefs and are they willing to be open / objective. As far as bashing OH'BLAMA I'm guilty as sin on that one. I could never agree with his policies both foreign and domestic, in fact only 57% voted Him in Office anyway. I'm sure after this year is over you'll see the numbers grow. Many Anglo-Americans I spoke with regret putting in Office in the first place, and for fear of being labeled a raciest refuse to tag Anti-OH'BLAMA stickers on there cars or speak openly in Public, most are waiting until 2012.
In the DR I'm considered white, in America I'm considered Mexican and to those who dislike me I'm a A&% H*#@.
But to those who really know I'm just plain HUMAN with just as many faults as MANY.
I Thank GOD for that.
Take care.
I like your style. And I think it was 52% of the popular vote was Obama's, if the rep.'s had anyone but geriatric McCain they would have won easily....the USA may never reover from the deficits Clinton-Bush and now Obama have given the USA
alright look at this way......Since were talking about big bucks, right. A good % of tourist $$ come from the U.S, right. Does disposable income [vacation monies] ring a bell ? those are big bucks were talking about right !. Suppose those individuals with small bits of monies left over were spent elsewhere, beginning to see the picture. Now look at it from another angle, With OH"BLAMA trying to destroy the U.S economic system with "Spread the Wealth" "leveling the economic playing field" and "CONTROLLING the LENDING INSTITUTIONS" and turn every Rich and Middle class into the poor working class, yeah ! I see a problem. Remember only the Rich & Middle class make up a large % of those Vacationing Americans in the DR. Buck for Buck it's less to vacation in the DR then any other Caribbean Island. GUESS WHAT !
YOU LIKE ME, MAKE PART OF THAT AMERICAN TOURISM $$$, make sense now.
SORRY, your right. See that's what you get when one sees those voting poles from CNN early on election night.
I WONDER WHAT ARE THE CURRENT PRESIDENTIAL PERCENTAGE APPROVAL RATINGS NOW ?
the lowerclass needs help as well. Many Dominicans in USA can not afford to go back to the island as much but they do send money back to the family in DR. If those people do not recieve help with the mortgage/credit card problem then the money flowing back to DR is decreased. Yes, DR needs as much tourist $$$ as they can get, but they also need the money that is sent from Dominicans in USA
Sorry...but this sounds like a north coast story. If they want credability...state numbers...not assumptions based on an unidentified restaurant owner.
Cheers froM a full bar in PuntA cANA
This CabareteWiliam character just bought this Casa Blanca motel a year ago. He overpaid for this "dump" by easily double and seems very frustrated because of that.
Lately his hotel guests have been robbed while a sleep, and he is to cheap to put a guard.
The man is racist and his neighbors dislike him.
I suggest to this communality to just ignore the man, he is not worth a second of your time.
