Montecristi, Dominican Republic.- The Tourism Ministry began the cleanup of Montecristi province (northwest) beaches and aims to do the same in those of Luperón, Punta Rusia, Azua and Samaná, so Dominicans and tourists can visit the country’s coasts safely.

The cleanup is part of a program Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia started recently, to be expanded to almost all of the country’s beaches.

Ulises Regino, who heads the beach cleanup program, said Tourism wants Dominican and foreign beachgoers to enjoy the same benefits of a clean beach as any guest of a luxury hotel.

The amount of trash allowed to accumulate on the beaches in the DR is sad....there is so much potential that lies beneath the waste....there's a couple of palm tree lined beach type spots on the Malecon (SD), near Parillia de Luis between the famous statue of the Padre overlooking the sea and the Oblisk.....they are filthy....however with a bit of clean-up, some pressure washing of the steps down, they are PRIME places to sit, have a beer and tapas with friends....small booth type places with coolers full of beer, sodas, water, coco frio....and the most basic of Dominican food, plastic chairs, tables and some loungers to catch some sun....these places are within walking distance of where the cruise ship comes in...so a couple of well positioned "tour guides: & maybe a van could help them be found........they'd also be visible from the ship when it docks....thus making it possible to work a "split" with the cruise line for the clientele.....it's that way in Mexico, y la Bahamas....

I have been in Jaun Dolio before and after a beach clean up and you would not believe the differance. I think if the government would put trash cans every 50 yards and shoot dead anyone who threw trash on the ground it would solve the beach trash problem. i was just joking about the shooting part so don't get all worked up about that. LOL
