SANTO DOMINGO.- The Minister of Tourism on Tuesday said the release of a document  by the United Nations Program for Development (UNPD) which slams the tourism industry is part of an international campaign against the country as a destination.

Francisco Javier Garcia said it was already verified that the UNPD document published in several newspapers “sought to jeopardize Dominican tourism. It’s not true that Dominican tourism is an untenable, but quite the opposite, it’s a tourism that’s sustained in time.”

He affirmed that contrary to what was disclosed all new tourism development plans stress the need to incorporate the different communities to develop those projects. “This statement which appeared in some newspapers seemed that it was going to unleash a fight between Tourism, Environment (Ministry), the UNPD …but things are already clear, it’s clear that it was to damage Dominican Republic’s tourism.”

Garcia noted that today tourism is the country’z main industry, which he said earned around 4.20 billion dollars last year. “It’s the activity which generates the highest amount of currencies.”

“And being thus we must have not only a preventive action, but of protection of this industry. It’s undoubtedly necessary to confront things like this. Naturally with the corresponding and measured moderation,” the official added.

4.2 Billion Dollars in Tourism a year, are you kidding me !
I'll have to ask where does the money go ?
Do we really need the UN's Control / Dictatorship ?
Imagine that a coalition of International Nations slamming the DR's Tourism $$ Industry which without it would perish.
I say simple.....DR out of the UN before it's to late.

Mrios, are you beginning to fall victim to the foolishness, too? did you read the article, and assess it critically, before calling for the DR to exit the UN? i respect you, sir, but do you think that if the DR withdrew from the UN it would make the news? call me a party pooper, too, but i have written several articles asserting that Dominican tourism, along with that of many other caribbean territories, is untenable, and unsustainable. my backside is sore from the lashings from guys like FredCDobbs, the erstwhile GC. hey, the UN did not write anything that is a big secret. i have not read the article, but i can guess what they say about social impact, leakage, resource depletion, foreign input, social contamination, and so on. can anyone point me to the article, PLEASE?

This report only states the obvious. If hoteliers are allowed to continue to build up our coast lines with all these hotels, in a few years time we will have a completely dead zone sorrounding our country. Slowly but surely they are killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. We will be left with eroded beaches, no life in our ocean waters and no tourist, remember tourism is all about appearances. A moratorium should be placed on all new or proposed constructions until things get up to par with the law. Its disgusting to drive through garabage heaps, open sewers and stray dogs to get to these "fancy" resorts. Clean up the sorrounding areas and provide infrastructure first, then carefully study proposals. If things continue the way they are, we will end up with a bunch of empty hotels sorrounded by ghettos and trash.

The UN is illegal and should not be acknowledged by any sovereign government. Period. This is an attempt to further bring down the economies of nations around the world led by the US shadow government. The UN is the HIVAIDS of world governments. Wear protection if dealing with them and avoidance is the best course of action.

Sajomero,
Good point, but....No Tourist, No Money, More Empty Hotels, More Unemployment, More Poverty etc..etc.. we'll still end up with Foreign owned Hotels with dead zones.
In my opinion half of the dead zones created are due to massive rains = massive flooding which find there way to our Rivers and empty into our Coast with tons of Human waste and Garbage. Since our Gov. turns a blind eye, why not have the ever so LOVING UN help the DR with its Ecological Problems for starters. We can pay'um back with free all-inclusive Hotel stays in Punta Cana during Rainy or Hurricane season.

All Take care.

What this article fails to provide is what UNPD stated that slammed the tourist industry. You cannot call them onto the carpet if you do not know what is it they said. We need to have the facts. Again, who, what, where, and how.

The article alludes that the tourism chief is afraid of any suggestion that changes the status-quo, that tourism answers to nobody.

They spend more on nepotism than on improving their own island.

Hell, if it was ONLY the inner cities of the DR that are thrashed I wouldn't comment.

I am taking about gorgeous uninhabited areas of the DR being a garbage can for the Dominican visitor.

I was in Playa Grande on the North coast, went in the crystal clear water and felt something swish across my ankles. I thought it was sea grass, but when I tried to see it I could not. So I dove to the bottom and I saw tens of thousands of little plastic cups. I was sicken by the sight and I am sicked every time I think of it.

Then I saw a dozen Dominicans playing Dominoes drinking Brugal in those same little plastic cups. Within 30 seconds a Dominican crumpled one and threw it on the sand. No conscious what so ever and this was an adult. I have never gone back.

Dominicans are their own worst enemy when it comes to killing the tourism industry.

Miros,

The only reason the “RICH” as you call them, I call them taxpayers including the recipients of the “aid,” have developed these social safety nets is because they don’t want the “untutored” mob rebelling in the streets.

You see the struggle is usual between repression and concessions. The powerful will repress the less powerful or powerless as much as the can get away with, but when they rebel then the give them concessions to remain in power.

I.e. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, civil rights legislation, the voting rights act affirmative action etcetera.

By pointing out the extremely unequal distribution of resources in DR, is not an attempt to deny that poverty and injustice doesn’t exist in other place even in the mighty US of A or that because it exist in the US or elsewhere it is ok for it to exist in DR.

The point is how the resources we have, especially because they are limited and at a moment in time finite, they need to be more equal invested in the entire populace so every body gets an opportunity to develop and progress, not just the powerful and well connected.

Example a $750,000,000 METRO with an operational cost of at least $25,000,000 a year for 20,000 riders a day when the rest of 8,980,000 Dominicans will never use it is an extremely gross and vulgar abuse of power and thievery of national resources.

To paraphrase ole Winston Churchill; “Never in the course of (Dominican) human events has so much been invested to benefit so few at the expense of so many!

That same trash problem exist in the U.S too. With every visit to a Park or campsite that small fee one pays goes right into the maintenance and upkeep, the rest is payed for by our taxes. Good thing I live in California all our trash in the wilderness goes up in smoke with the wild fires for everybody to inhale. Our Beaches are the best with "DANGER, POLLUTED WATER" more than half the Summer. In America were the Experts in Award winning Commercials like..."Smokey the Bear", "Give a hoot, don't Pollute", " Iron Eyes Cody", "Do not Litter" signs posted every where reminding all, and $1000.00 plus fines to boot. Good thing in America We keep REMINDING FOLKS. our Landfills are over flowing, there's even talk about polluting Space our future next Frontier. NYC produces more TRASH in one Day then the DR produces in one Week. Why don't the DR do the same.

And what ever you do...Don't drink from our Lakes and Streams and Rivers...not that I would do the same in the DR or any other Country.

Heated debate: perspective:

Touritsts dont read UN reports before booking their vacations, they have trouble reading reviews or any info on the country they are visiting. They have trouble leaving their all inclusives. Tourist perception of DR is one of all inclusives, pretty beach, good music... Must dont care what goes on outside their all inclusive... its only a road thayt leads to their Vacation.

We are our worst ennemy ( that goes for every countries). Dirty beaches, dirty street, dirty country side. We have ways to go in conserving our enviroment. But like many problem in this country, it is a question of education.
Maya Angelou once said: "When I knew better ,I did better."

DR is years behind on many things, enviroment consrvation, education, driving safety, sexual education... all those subject we love to debate on this website. No matter how much time we spend saying this and that should be done, it took time in the US , Canada and Europe to rise the populations

We keep forgetting that it is not enough to say: " this is how it should be", "this is what you should do" . It took more than that for Americans, Canadians and Europeens to get there.

But lets not forget that we have our hands pretty full with lack of electricity, services, drinkable water, education, corruption.... blah blah blah... Some many things needs to be the priority...

Bleu Raven, you are a voice of refreshment in this wilderness. one of the problems we have here is that most people do not grow up and become adults. they think everything is either someone else's responsibility, or someone else's fault. so they complain about the mess, and two minutes later they throw their styrofoam cup to their feet. open a pack of cigarettes in a crowd and everybody asks for one. its the sense of entitlement that people feel that they should be taken care of. i do not have sufficient social studies skills to say definitively if that is a function of generations of living under benevolent dictators, but something is amiss. the responsibility which is an attribute of maturity is missing, and so we continue to go late to work, do as little as possible, impregnate women and run away, blame the next guy for our failings, and blame government for everything. maybe we have to learn to govern our own lives first.

Camana, though i do not get the gist of the last sentence, i appreciate your kind words.i sum up my thinking in small examples. i can open a pack of cigarettes in any bar in a place like NYC, and they will last me as long as i choose. i open one in a bar here, and 15 girls come over saying "regaleme uno". it is not as if they are hard core smokers, or they would buy their own. it is just that they see someone else with them, and feel as if they are entitled to share the spoils of other people's efforts. then, if you decide that after giving away 12, you would like to keep the rest for yourself, you become the bad guy, and the ones you decline refer to you as a cheapskate. go figure!
