Miami.– Haitian President Rene Preval called Friday for long-term aid to his Caribbean nation after hurricanes this summer caused mass destruction, leaving tens of thousands homeless and hundreds of millions in damages to Haitian agriculture alone.

At a conference in Coral Gables, he also urged the Bush administration to grant "temporary protected status," a kind of refugee designation, to Haitians in the United States, saying his country can no longer afford to accept deportees.

The United Nations has issued an appeal for $100 million in emergency aid to help the storm-ravaged nation. But so far, the country has received only about 17 percent of the amount. That's too little to meet basic needs of disaster victims, never mind rebuild roads, bridges and other systems needed to attract foreign investment and business to spur economic development, Haitian officials said.

Haiti has been relying on U.N. peackeeping forces since at least 2004 to help squelch gangs and restore security in the country that long has been the poorest in the Americas. It now seeks to extend the U.N. presence in a recovery phase, replacing weapons "as much as possible with tractors to rebuild the country," Preval said.

I never understand how these gov'ts, including dom. rep., never have what it takes to take care of its people. However, all these politicos, seem to be magicians when it comes to multiplying their own wealth.

It's a business you idiots. POVERTY has become big business for most countries i.e the USA it works like this: Haiti for example is poor OKAY Haitians need help they need aid 99.9% of the time they need money. You know how i church sometimes they pass around a plate so people can donate money for the needy well the so called rich countries does the same thing they ask around other big countries to give money on the behalf of the poor needy people of Haiti or Africa. Now lets say France give out 10mil Spain gives 5mil the USA gives 30 mil Norway gives 10 mil that's all fine and dandy but Haiti usually don't get a dime of that money because we owe the world more than that and we have to pay them each month. that's like having a credit card all the donated money you see on the news are not real money they are simply credits. Let me put it down this way thats like me giving you $100 on the 1st of the month but you owe me $ 99 due on the 15th of that month

They want us divided while they themselves are reuniting look at the EU. they are more powerful than the USA now. lol even they USA is getting on board with its version of the EU call the North American Union they are even working on a single monetary system called the AMERO. that's why the market is crashing . Fannie & Freddie are not truly gone they will simply reemerge later under a new name they want to start Fresh with the Amero. Even poor Chavez is trying to follow their footstep the more Chavez is trying to get away from them the more he is doing their bidding for them without knowing it. lol that's the coup of the century I tell you. Why do you think Chavez is still alive? because Chavez is trying to reunite Latin America with its; version of the EU its called the Union of South American Nations and of course you already know of the African Union at the end there will be 5 union for all 5 continents. Where is our Ayiti Kyskeya in all of this?

If History does repeat itself then our Present is our Past and our Past is our Future. I say again where does our beloved fit in all of this? How will we be remembered? I swear on my life if we don't get our shit together as one nation under god indivisible and justice for all we will soon find ourselves extinct. NO more Haiti NO more Dominican Republic but Ayiti, Kyskeya (Quiskeya) or Bohio. Pick one MFkers.

How come a country who was self reliant all the way till the mid 1980s be in such dire need for food now. When Haiti went to get a loan from the IMF and world bank who are directed by the U.S, they attached a string to it.

They said "you can only get loan if you open your market to outsiders" so they did, not knowing the they would flood the haitian market with their rice and putting thousands of farmer out of work.

Also the big countries must understand that its a bad policy to go in a small country in flood their market with their extremely cheap products because that would put local farmers out of business and those now Unemployed people will migrate to the big cities which will increase crime and create political instability.

I hate the fact that our gvt have no shame begging for food without trying to do nothing for our people, themself. like the Pope J P 2 said in 1983 when he came to haiti "SOMETHING MUST BE CHANGE IN THIS COUNTRY".SO it is time for a revolution in this country, we Haitian have to do another 1804, but not against Napoleon Army for our Independancy but this against all these bastards that are ruining the image of Haiti, and for food, environement, education health for our Children. Haiti we stand..... Haiti pa'p mouri.

Dominicanation, It's obvious you are not Dominican. I don't like when non-Dominicans use Dominican screen names but what can you do....Keep both countries separate b/c we are both really different in terms of culture, mentally, language, etc. but have more cooperate as is currently going on. Relations between country are really strong and lets just build on that. Hispanola, the best of both worlds and lets keep it that all.

This happens every year! Haiti is always hit by a tropical storm and leads to death and disaster. And yet Haiti does not evacuate its people from trouble areas despite early warnings on atmospheric disturbances. The geology in Haiti is set up to amplify the effects of storms (like sutnamis from oceanic earthquakes) with muddy avalanches and artificial swampy lakes. Haiti is a human failure. It does not matter if you throw 10 billion dollars to them because their behavior will not change (actually we are feeding it) and that includes demographic explosion (population growth of 228,000 a year), more felling trees, gangs (violence), drugs, and corruption.

Dominicanation, i am shocked that there are people like you who try to make this a race issue. oj is a criminal. he is inclined towards illegal activities. it doesn't matter if he is black or white. he is a terrible person who has finally been brought to justice. please don't make this about race. its about justice. those poor people he killed can finally rest in peace.

I believe that you can send billions to DR and Haiti and still it is not enough...you can send infinite amounts of food relief...still this is not enough...our corrupt governments will always take their bigger share than the share that reaches the mouthes of the needy.

Haiti is a cursed black hole, figuratively speaking.
No matter how much aid you throw in there it will always be the same, because the aid will never get to the needy, because the Haitians bureaucrats will steal it before the poor get it. There are 300,000 children being exploited and sold as slaves in Haiti by the Haitians themselves. They come in tap taps to the DR to beg in the streets.
Haitians are their own worse enemies and they have an historical curse for having burned, pillaged and raped so many Dominicans, during the occupation they outlawed the Spanish language, whites could not own land and the Vatican and catholic church were expelled.
When the Dominicans kicked their butts and sent them back to Haiti they tried to return 11 times
and were beaten back time and time again. Dominicans forgot all these lessons and they have to be reminded that the Haitians are a cursed and damned race full of racial hatred against the white man or even the mulatto race like we are in DR.
